Easy walking distance to Waikiki shopping, restaurants and beaches. We went during a busy time of year and the hotel is dwarfed by the nearby complexes. Despite the chaos of the area, the hotel was a sanctuary within a sea of people. This seemed to separate the Royal Hawaiian from the others in the area including the Sheraton next door. I had trouble deciding which one to reserve and I'm glad that I went with the Royal Hawaiian. The noise from the streets are still too loud but that is why you would go to Maui or other islands instead. Overall, the hotel made us feel very comfortable and the staff was attentive.

"Mommy, we like Kauai, but can we leave early and go to the Royal?". This is why we ended our Spring Break trip, in Honolulu at the hotel that feels like home. The staff is always friendly, remembers us by name, and feel like old friends. The spacious rooms in the historic section are our favorite, and each is a little different than the other, one of the great characteristics of a classy historic hotel. If you like classy elegant hotels with long-time staff on a beautiful stretch of Waikiki Beach, the Royal Hawaiian is for you.

The Royal Hawaiian Luxury Resort / RHH (or the Pink Palace as it is sometimes called) has been a destination for Kings and Queens, actors& actresses and many travellers! My Husband and myself got Married in Hawaii at St Augustine's Catholic Church and then had our Reception at the Royal Hawaiian! We have been travelling to the RHH for at least 20 yrs( before it was a Luxury Hotel- but still beautiful )and have made many friends there plus staying connected to the Hotel Management and wonderful staff!we always stay in the same suite- which we love! The beautiful Private Beach, the pool and a separate pool for children( slide etc)the restaurants, the talked about Mai Tai Bar and the luau on Mon Nights bring people from all over the Island to see it!There is also a great shopping mall and high end stores and restaurants to visit ! Also Newts for Hand made Hats and Original bathing suits and tops! The Pink Robes and towels in your room- suite tops your Holiday off! Everywhere I travel to this has to be one of my Top Destinations or the "Top Destination " you must Go & See for yourself! Enjoy! Wendy Collins

Fantastic location, public spaces, environment. If you like classic luxury this is definitely the place for you. Quiet serenity in the middle of Waikiki. Busy, but never crowded. Oozes class and sophistication. The looks on my daughters faces 11, 14, 17 when we checked in was priceless. Be prepared to spend $52.36 per day for 2 beach chairs plus umbrella in the front (brown) section. The beach was extremely crowded (I live in Hermosa Beach) with plenty of activities (pricey, but remember where you are) available. On property food good with prices in line with neighborhood. In house restaurant dinner on par with local high end hot spots (Alan Wong's/Roy's). We stayed in the historic wing in a garden view jr suite with carved doors, small bathrooms and high ceilings typical of hotels from that era. Noise not an issue ever. The staff is extraordinary with the exception of a restaurant hostess and the woman in charge of beach services. The history and tradition of this hotel enhanced the experience of our family vacation.

As a family of four with young children (age 6), we have found the RH to be a wonderful place to spend our family vacations. Our first trip was in September and I didn't post a review, due primarily to my personal frequency of travel -- I just don't often write up reviews. But this most recent visit, I felt the RH earned a "5-star" rating for all the little things they did for us - as well as all the things they did and should be doing as a high-end resort. On this trip, we stayed Easter week which I expected to be ridiculously busy. Surprisingly, it didn't "feel" busy. So rather than provide subjective feedback, I figure I would add some detail that many other travelers (and possibly the hotel staff) could benefit from. Here goes.
Pros:
1) Room quality, amenities, resort location, property condition, etc. All amazing. We have twice stayed in the historic wing which is obviously older but you wouldn't know it by the quality of the rooms. Travelers - the main different I believe between historic and tower is the tower has a balcony and is ocean view. P.S. Staff was awesome, they let us take a look at variety of the rooms so we can know what we might want to book next time!
2) Staff/service was running like a top. From check-in to check-out and tons of interactions in between, there was a very personal touch added. The lady who checked us in remembered our name the entire stay as did a few other people. The GM herself ran the easter egg hunt and talked about family tradition of the easter egg hunt at the RH and how guests and employee families come together every year for the celebration. Overall, the staff was far more attentive and friendly than was our experience in August/September of 2012 (which was still a good experience). They just seemed more “relaxed” this time around (in a good way).
3) Beach location deserves its own category. From what I understand this hotel was the 2nd on Waikiki Beach so it picked a pretty darn good location. It’s a GREAT spot for young kids to have fun in the ocean and for parents to enjoy allowing their kids’ time in the ocean. No kidding and I’m no surveyor, but you can walk 200-300 yards out it he ocean and still be knee-deep. Some moderate waves build which allow the kids to boogie board or surf – all while feeling super safe (to us).
Tips:
1) Beach Chairs for Travelers – know there are two categories of reserved beach loungers. The “brown” chairs fill up quite fast during peak seasons. These are the first two rows on the beach. If you have young kids, the preferred location is the front row of the brown chairs so you can walk down easily to the beach. You can also keep your eyes on your kids easily. And for those considerate of others’ your kids will have fewer people to kick sand up on! The second set of chairs are the pink chairs and those are the farthest back on the beach (i.e. closest to the hotel). The pros to these chairs as I see it include a) I believe these get serviced from the bar like they do at the pool; b) the whole area is reserved so you don’t get people walking through/by you all the time. Not like you do really in the brown chairs however the pink zone is just quieter.
2) Two Minor Recommendations for Hotel – For multi-day guests, please update the internet connection option to allow a multi-day “purchase” (note, it’s included in the resort fee but you still have to connect with room # and name). It can get annoying having to connect every device every day to the network. I have stayed at other resorts where you can choose “7 day purchase” and the network remembers your device ID and you don’t have to reconnect every day. The second suggestion is that I believe you guys could make a killing off figuring out a way to service the brown chairs on the beach. Just an idea and perhaps it’s been tried but we found ourselves always leaving for an hour or two to get food. If presented with another easy option we would have done that. Perhaps you can’t for other reasons but with kids we wanted to be at the front of the browns but then have no service.

If any travelers have any questions about our experiences, feel free to PM me.

While we have experienced previous enjoyable stays at the Royal Hawaiian this trip was quite disappointing.
The room size was adequate although the bathroom was small. Rooms are not quiet as we were often awakened by guests' noise from adjacent rooms. Electronics (TV & internet) in the room were not functioning until a complaint was made. Room cleaning staff although amiable was weak as well as service was sporadic and often did not occur until late in the day or early evening.
Hotel now charges for 'on the beach' lounges & umbrellas which forced guests back to the pool area causing overcrowding. What was once a quiet adult pool became an overcrowded and too loud children's pool. Guests seemed to invite non Royal Hawaiian guests to the pool causing yet more overcrowding. Cabanas at pool side are additional fee charged.
The mandatory additional Resort Fee is excessive for what you get. Pool and beach staff may (?) no longer be Royal Hawaiian staff but rather a contracted service to the Royal Hawaiian.

But on the positive (and much appreciated), the Concierge Staff were very good as well as Francis at the pool who was very attentive to the guests' needs and comforts. A special Thank You to Francis at poolside for your alert and special attentiveness.

All in all, it is doubtful that we will stay at The Royal Hawaiian again. This venue seems to have lost it advantage over other choices as it is did not provide the traditional quality for the premium cost.

Recently had a 1 day lay-over in Hawaii on the way back from Australia and thought we would stay on the beach for convenience. Chose the Royal Hawaiian as we had been there years ago and remembered it as a beautiful historic hotel. Have to admit it was Easter Sunday so a very busy day for them. The staff were very helpful and friendly. We were very disappointed in the pool - it looks like a childs wading pool. Guests at the hotel are allowed to go over to the Sheraton and use the water slide pool, but that pool area was packed also. The beach chairs and umbrellas were all rented by noon, and the chairs by the pool are reserved early in the morning. Apparently, you have to get up by 7 to get a chair and/or umbrella. I also didn't expect that a hotel that charges an additional resort fee would actually rent the chairs and umbrellas on the beach at an extra cost ($45 - $55 / day). The bathrooms were a bit small but since we were there a short time, it was not too much of an issue.
