“Amazing Breakfast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013 via mobile

Had breakfast here and it was amazing. Sitting right on the edge of the beach and watching the waves.

Wife had the most amazing musli and i had the egg white omlet. They even serve a small shot of fruit smoothy as a palet clenzer to start.

Really would recommend heading for breakfast here or a sunset cocktail.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

I had high expectations for this hotel, given it's history as being one of the first hotels in Waikiki. I'll list what met and did not meet my expectations.

- Service was great. Everyone was friendly and genuine. Did not meet anyone that was not happy to see us there.
- Bed was comfortable. Very soft.
- Great location. A little hard to find at first, but once you do, it's central to everything. Hotel is situated right on the beach, so you can go straight to the beach/ocean from your room via a 5 minute walk.

Unfortunately, there is a lot of things that the hotel needs to work on.
- Carpet looked very old. Perhaps it is part of the charm of such a historic hotel, but it did not work for me.
- There is a resort fee of $35+tax. This covers items such as parking, limited phone calls, internet, and drink coupons for 2.
- Internet did not work at all on Saturday. The connection was better on Sunday, but what a disappointment. Luckily, I was did not have any tasks that couldn't be postponed until Sunday, but trying to connect on Saturday was very frustrating.
- $25 to access spa. Really? Most places cover this with the resort fee.
- Fee to use umbrella? Again, what is the resort fee for?
- Room was very small. It was cramped, especially the bathroom. Only one person will fit in the bathroom.
- Air filter is very dirty. I do not want to speak or think about this. It was truly disgusting.
- Was only provided a 1:30p check-out. As SPG Gold, they keep promoting 4p check-out as an incentive.

So would I stay at this hotel again? Maybe. The service was great and I did not find anyone that was unfriendly. But for the price of a 5 star hotel, the rooms disappoint. If the price of the hotel came down or if more services was included with the resort fee, then I would consider staying at the Royal Hawaiian again in the future.

Aloha SunnyCA221,

Thank you for taking the time to post your review and for the kind compliments “service was great. Everyone was friendly and genuine. Great location.” Nevertheless, we are disappointed that your stay was anything less than exceptional. Bringing these details to our attention allows us to improve and I have shared your feedback with our senior leaders. We hope that you will allow us another opportunity to demonstrate our signature hospitality, for which The Luxury Collection brand is known.

In the middle of the mobs of people in Waikiki, the RH is an oasis set among tranquil green gardens and swaying palm trees. Hidden from the street by the Royal Hawaiian Shopping center and other hotels, the hotel's lovely open air halls remind you that there is still a bit of Hawaii in Waikiki. Stayed this month in a room in the ocean tower with a great view of the beach and Diamond Head. The room was clean and comfortable with maid service twice a day and lovely robes, also free Wi-Fi and water. I have stayed at most other Waikiki beachfront hotels and also been charged for a chaise lounge and umbrella on the beach. Some of the hotels don't even have beaches directly in front of them.
The Royal is the best. Stay there if you can.

this is a belated review- my wife and I stayed at the Royal Hawaiian one year ago next week. We stayed in the tower, which offers a great view of Waikiki to Diamond Head. The room was very nicely appointed- not large but very comfortable. I called ahead a week and asked the concierge to have flowers waiting in the room for our anniversary. They arranged a beautiful bouquet that she loved.
The building and the grounds are classic Hawaii, beautiful and lush. The location is about as central to Waikiki as you can get. The MaiTai bar is a great place to watch the sunset and the people. Be sure to wander the lobby and check out the paintings of the RH when it was the only hotel on Waikiki. Very cool.

This self-contained, historic resort reminds you at every turn that you are in Hawaii. The service is impeccable (special kudos to Laurie Ann at the concierge desk), the rooms are quiet and spacious, and (while you might forget it as you wander the exotic park-like gardens), you are just steps from Waikiki Beach, Kalakaua Avenue, and all that Honolulu has to offer. Watching sunsets from the MaiTai Bar, hopping on a catamaran (or paddle board or surf board) right in front of the hotel, taking a swim on a whim...it's right there. Our vacation was effortless and seamless. The ONLY caveat we have--and this is not the fault of the hotel, but due to local ordinances--is that you can't just wander onto the beach and plop onto a chaise longue under a pink umbrella. It costs $44 a day--even for hotel guests--to rent one. That came as a bit of a shock. But sitting on the beach and swimming is still free. We saw at least one bride and groom a day, but never had a sense that we were located in party central, as one does in some other oceanfront hotels.

Stayed here for 8 nights mid February 2013. It is a charming hotel and takes u away from the hustle of Waikiki. We stayed in the old section. Interconnecting rooms. Loved it. Great restaurant attached to the hotel as well.

Our 2 nights at the Royal Hawaiian were idyllic! Greeted at the entrance by a bevy of bell men, our luggage and car swept away, bedecked with lei, we were led to the grand, open reception area, seated and served small glasses of some beautiful pink fruit concoction.
Rooms are tiny but well-appointed. Everyone on staff (always called "Ambassadors") was friendly and so happy to help. The hotel itself is a Grande Dame dripping with history and the elegance of an earlier, more genteel era.
The Mai Tai lounge & Azure restaurant had great food. The pool area is beautiful. Everything is pink. Our last morning we spent on the beach in two lounges with an umbrella, swimming in the ocean, being waited on by the staff, and mourning the fact that our time here was up!
All in all, a perfect experience!
