Location in Waikiki is tops as are the staff. The Beach Boys (some are girls) provide excellent service, led by long time Supervisor Chuck. Everything is done to make your visit something to remember. GM Kelly has done an excellent job during her years at the Royal. Monica and Cori take excellent care in getting the room type desired. We just made our 30th visit since 1988 and continue to recommend the Royal Hawaiian to all of our friends.

Stayed at the Royal Hawaiian in October with my wife. We left the kids on Maui with their grandmother and had a great couple of days on Oahu. I prefer the out lying islands of Hawaii and even the north shore of Oahu over the city however my wife wanted to hit some shopping areas, take a cool surf lesson and have a variety of restaurants to choose from.
The Royal Hawaiian is a great hotel. They have changed the entrance and done a very impressive remodel. Upon check - in we were upgraded to a fabulous suite that had incredibly high ceilings, two huge rooms and a wonderful bathroom. The room was first class all the way.
The check-in process was easy, fast and very comfortable.
The concierge booked us a couple dinner reservations and each recommended restaurant was perfect.
Location, Location Location. If you are going to be in a big city in Hawaii then the Royal Hawaiian is a perfect location with amazing views of diamond head and within walking distance to all Honolulu has to offer. The beach area felt private with good service and comfortable chairs.
The surf lessons we had booked right through the Hotel were fantastic. A great instructor that took his time with us and made sure we caught some good waves. I can honestly say it was the best surf experience of my life.
The food at the hotel was good, not great. The breakfast staff was a little strange but overall didn't impact the picture perfect setting or our island mood.
I love Starwoods Luxury Collection hotels! You can always count on a certain level of service and the Royal Hawaiian hit the mark on that again. We loved the Pink Lady.

Room Tip: Ocean front with views of Diamond head are great. If you get offered a suite on the garden side take...

My husband and I just returned from an extraordinary second honeymoon at the Royal Hawaiian from Oct 17 to the 25th. For personal and professional travel--including when I served as a Presidential Appointee--I've stayed in some of the finest hotels in the world in nearly 40 countries, and none matched the experience of the Royal Hawaiian. Everything was perfect, but there were two factors that made it stand out: the service and the atmosphere of complete serenity. In terms of service, no request was too large or small, and everyone from the concierge to the maids made us feel like we were truly welcome guests. The serentiy came from beautiful surroundings, meticulous gardens--and being part of, yet set apart, from the bustle of Waikiki. Everything was at our doorstep, yet as soon as we entered the Royal Hawaiian grounds, it was like being a world apart. In terms of facilities, it had everything we needed--shops, fabulous food, the best luau on Oahu, and even Hawaiian crafts. The Coconut Lanai was our favorite spot at the end of the day. And although other guests have commented on the pool, I did not find it small--as there was the "megapool" shared with the Sheraton; the beauty of that is that all the children and teens went to the megapool, leaving the oval pool a perfect place to sun oneself in peace. I was also perfectly happy with what the Royal Hawaiian Hotel offered in way of restaurant, bar, shops; the larger hotels, with all the comotion that comes with them, had none of the Royal Hawaiian's elegance, sophistication, serenity--and tranquility. Finally, when the management found out it was our second honeymoon, we received a number of wonderful perks. I can say with all sincerity that we are already planning our return visit to the Pink Palace for our next anniversary in 2013.

Room Tip: Ask for a junior suite overlooking the garden, it was blissfully quiet.

My wife and I enjoyed three nights at "The Royal Hawaiian Hotel - A Luxury Collection Resort" from November 2 to 5, 2012. It was our third stay at The Royal Hawaiian Hotel in the past eighteen months, and probably the best of our three stays.

Much has been written about The Royal Hawaiian Hotel. I believe that one either loves The Royal Hawaiian Hotel (and all it's history and quirks), or else is indifferent to The Royal Hawaiian Hotel. For those people that are indifferent, The Royal Hawaiian Hotel will seem expensive and old fashioned. To those like my wife and myself that love The Royal Hawaiian Resort, it is a special place, straight out of the Waikiki glory years of the 1920s and 1930s, with an atmosphere that says "Hawaii" like no other Oahu property can.

We stayed in room 269, an ocean-view mini-suite with a King bed and located above the small but functional swimming pool, in the historic old part of The Royal Hawaiian Hotel. We always stay in the historic old building. The well appointed rooms with ten foot ceilings and marble restrooms in the older historic part of the hotel, restored in 2008 and 2009 as part of a complete overhaul of The Royal Hawaiian Hotel, cannot in my opinion be matched by the new wing in the hotel or in by any of the other modern hotels that have sprouted up like weeds over the past sixty years in Waikiki. The Royal Hawaiian Hotel truly is "The Pink Palace".

Pros:

1. Great ambience.

2. Great location on the beach in the heart of Waikiki, and within walking distance of everything, including The Ala Moana Shopping Mall, one of the coolest shopping malls on the planet Earth.

3. Excellent service by the employees generally, and by the room cleaning staff, front desk staff, and bell hops in particular.

4. Small but functional outdoor swimming pool, located beside the restaurant and overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

5. Smoke free environment (with limited outdoor designated smoking areas).

Cons:

1. The dreaded and stupid "resort fee". I will never understand resort fees. They are a dishonest way of adding $25 plus tax to an already expensive room rate. Resort fees are not optional, so just include the stupid things in the room rate. Instead of advertising the room at $315 per night, plus tax and resort fees, man up and tell the truth. The room rate is $340 per night plus 9.25% Occupancy Tax and a further 4.712% General Excise Tax, for a nightly rate of $385.16.

2. Wireless Internet is included with the resort fee. Sort of. You see, despite the extensive renovations to The Royal Hawaiian Hotel in 2008 and 2009, someone forgot to install a wireless Internet system that actually works throughout the hotel, gardens and swimming pool area. My wife and I each had iPhones and laptop computers, yet we could not get Internet at times in our room or at the pool on any of our devices (interestingly, we did get a strong signal from the neighbouring Outrigger Waikiki Hotel in both our room and by the pool). In 2012, there really is no excuse for poor wireless Internet, especially when the customer is being charged a resort fee. The management should be embarrassed to provide such poor wireless Internet reception.

3. The 37 inch flat screen televisions are a joke. Reception is not in high definition. In fact, most channels are poor quality and the volume did not work for about a third of the channels. Again, in 2012, there really is no excuse for failing to have crystal clear high definition tv. The management should be embarrassed to provide such poor quality tv.

Conclusion:

Overall, we love The Royal Hawaiian Resort. Management needs to man-up and fix the poor wireless Internet and tv reception problems, but we do not let those problems negate an otherwise wonderful holiday experience. On a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is terrible and 10 is perfect, I rate The Royal Hawaiian Hotel as a solid 8.

Room Tip: Stay in the original historic building!

Aloha Mr. David P,

Mahalo for the very thoughtful review and for your continue loyalty to The Royal Hawaiian and the Starwood Ohana. We are pleased to hear that you had such a memorable stay. We truly appreciate your feedback and endorsement of our resort.

As it, turns out our senior leaders have been challenged with the wiring of the cable and internet connection. They have been actively working with specialists to find a solution for the spotty reception. Being a part of a historical resistor and the physical architecture has groomed a set of leaders who are unrelenting with finding creative solutions. Please know that we are working diligently and truly hope to find a resolution before your next visit.

Be sure to let us know about your next visit. We look forward to welcoming you back to The Royal Hawaiian as our ohana.

Warmest aloha

This hotel had some good points. It is right on the beach (many Waikiki hotels are not), but still near many shops and restaurants. It is beautiful, well maintained and historic. Rooms were nice and well decorated. Because much of the hotel was built in the 1920's, many of the rooms are not orientated towards the beach. In the 1920's, I guess one of the architect's goals was to keep the rooms cool in the days before air conditioning. The initial room we were assigned had virtually no view (see room selection tips later). Room rates were very expensive. Plus, a daily resort fee was added to the stated rate. The pool was a little on the small side, and beach chairs were $40 extra per day for two.

Room Tip: The hotel has a newer attached tower with rooms that overlook the pool and beach. We moved to one o...

Aloha BillLouisville,

Thank you for your review and your gracious compliments about The Royal Hawaiian being “beautiful, well maintained, historic and a great location.” As part of the National Register of Historic Hotels, we have great affinity for the authenticity of our original designs and are thrilled that you share our same sentiments.

The Royal Hawaiian offers a choice of two pools. The smaller adult pool and the larger family oriented pool at Helumoa Playground. We express regret that our ambassadors were remiss in sharing this information with you. We value your feedback and will share your comments with our team. We look forward to welcoming you back for your next visit.

After a week on Kona we finished up our Hawaiian holiday with a bit of luxury... And it was worth every cent.
Early check-in, room upgrade, amazing views, free wi-fi, superb service and the most comfortable bed of our holiday. I guess all things expected at a luxury hotel but quite often not experienced.
We maximised the hotel amentities and restaurants and can highly recommend the Mai Tai bar for casual ding and yummy cocktails - the bar staff seemed to really enjoy their job and offered fast and friendly service. We also loved the fine dining at Azure where my fish was so fresh it tasted like it had just been caught.
Do book lounger & umbrella sets on the beach - fabulous way to relax and enjoy your days.
Best bit for me was on the day of checkout, which is at 12 noon. Our flight wasnt until 11pm that night. We were offered access to a guest lounge room where we could chill out and shower prior to heading off to the airport - I cant say how much we valued this and there was no additional charge.
All in all our stay at The Royal Hawaiian was pretty close to perfect and without doubt would be our chouce of accomodation in Hawaii when we return - finances allowing :-)

Room Tip: If you can get an ocean view! Book your Loungers & Umbrellas on line before you go
