“great background, ordinary now”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2012

Stayed here in January 2012. One of the first hotels (since 1920s) in Waikiki and Honolulu which saw celebrities and prominent figures of the 20th century. But fame faded. Beachfront chairs are all occupied by someone's towels from 6 am. But if you find "right word" for the servicing staff these chairs can be yours.. Tower rooms are clean but have poor interior. Receptionists seldom smile and seem tired of guests and routine. But in general the staff was very cooperative.

Mahalo for sharing your recent experience with us. We are happy to hear that you found our staff to be so helpful, but sorry to hear that you found our beachfront to be busy, our newly renovated Tower room decor not to meet your preference, and your front desk interaction to be uncharacteristic of the true Royal experience.
While our beach chairs are available on a first come, first serve basis, we do reserve chairs for guests who have returned consequetively for over 20 years.
We thank you for all your feedback and have addressed your concerns with management and hope for the opportunity to provide you with the true Royal treatment in the future.
With kind regards, The Royal Hawaiian Team.

This is one of those rare hotels that is uniquely of its place. Staying here makes the place - a noisy, commercial, nearly sandless strip of beach - still work its magic. There's no rational argument to make for it. The beautiful grounds and wonderful public spaces you can enjoy without staying here. The tower rooms, as widely noted, are not large, and towers nearby can offer you pretty much the same views. The mattresses are not as good as your average chain's these days. The menu prices are staggering for what's on offer. The pool is an oversized bathtub. And yet - it's a great experience and total delight to be here. It is gratifying that its owner and Starwood continue to run it to the very high standard that they do.

The beach access is, in fact, one rational argument. Guests get chairs and umbrellas right on the beach. In other beach resorts, that's nothing too special. Here on Waikiki, it's the equivalent of 50 yard-line seats at the Super Bowl. So if you must, try to factor that in.

Room Tip: Tower rooms ending in 00 on certain floors (14, 15, a few others) have extra large balconies that of...

We stayed 5 nights at the beginning of December and were warmly greeted with the juice service and cold towels and a very nice front desk agent. It was so nice to sit down while checking in. Our room was a standard king bed in the historical section. The room was stunning with a fresh fruit plate, bottle water and robes. I thought the room was a very nice size and the bathroom size was fine for the two of us. The hotel grounds were immaculate and you really felt removed from everything else while staying there. We really enjoyed the chairs with the umbrellas by the beach and never had a problem getiing one. Our only complaints were guests smoking across the hall. The hotel told them to stop but the kept doing it. The hallway smelt of smoke and it also came into our room. Another problem we had was getting internet service we hardly had it the entire time we were there, which was hard for doing work back home. Would I stay here again yes, I would be hopefully next time we won't have any issues.

Despite what I am about to say, we have stayed at the RH on several occasions, and wouldn't stay anywhere else in Waikiki. Is it a 5* resort? well I have always had my reservations about that. The common areas are majestic, and relaxing. The staff (especially the chambermaids who address you by name) are all friendly and smiling and the hotel location can't be beat. It is truly an oasis in between the hustle and bustle of the main shopping street and the beach.
The couple of things I have always had a gripe about, is (1) the size of the bedrooms in the tower. They have a couple of allocated floors where you can smoke outside on the lanai. Granted there are three of us in there, but the beds are only twin size (4'6"). The closet is shockingly small and located in the bathroom. We have NEVER been able to stow our suitcases because there isn't anywhere. The rooms have been decorated since we first went there, but the decor is nothing special. The views of the sunrise and sunset are awesome and all the rooms face the ocean.
My second gripe has always been the way they allocate the beach beds. Although they have made slight improvements since the first time we went, when we were told that we had to guests for at least 20 years to get a front row bed. You have to be a sprinter of olympic ability to guarantee your space at 7am.
The beach side restaurant(Surf Lanai) now offers a buffet breakfast for $35 per head, but again it really wasn't anything special, as far as I could see.
Susan at the beach bar makes a wicked mai tai.
We paid a resort fee of $20+ tax per day, however, this along with the room rates have now been increased.
The RH is a special place and I do feel disloyal reporting negative things, don't let it dissuade you from staying here.

Room Tip: If you are only going to Waikiki once - RH is the place. The Cheesecake Factory (just outside the R...

Mahalo nui loa Chickie123 for being so loyal to our resort. We are delighted to hear that even after numerous stay with us, you would never stay anywhere else in Waikiki. We thank you for your compliments of our many relaxation areas, genuinely friendly staff, and wonderfully central location. We also greatly appreciate you sharing your feedback for improvement.
Our Tower rooms do have smaller closets, and the views are indeed unbeatable, but if a larger closet is your preference, perhaps try our Historic Guestrooms, which have much larger, and in some cases, walk-in closets.
Our Breakfast Buffet was a Holiday special, and the Restaurant has now resumed Ala carte service only.
Beach lounge chairs and the 90 minute policy continues to be something we are working on in an effort to ensure we can make all our guests happy - thank you for sharing your concern - we are listening and always looking to improve this area.
Mahalo also for mentioning Susan at the Mai Tai Bar - she is a fabulous ambassador and we are delighted that you enjoy her cocktails.
We look so forward to your next visit and hope we to hear more feedback during your next stay.
With best regards and aloha, The Royal Hawaiian Team.

My husband broke his neck and shoulder bodysurfing on the Big Island. As he was lifeflighted to Oahu, we needed quick accommodations. As an SPG member, we chose the Royal Hawaiian and could not have made a better choice. This is a peaceful, beautiful hotel in the midst of the chaos that is Waikiki. It was quiet, clean, comfortable and beautiful. I used to be a trip director many years ago and have traveled all over the world staying only at 5 stars and the service we received at the RH was second to none. Other than a small glitch with breakfast (it takes too long to get seated), the restaurants are first rate with some of the best views in Hawaii. Yes, it's crowded on Waikiki, but at the RH, you feel far away from the crowds more than at any other hotel. The staff was so accommodating about every request we had and are so appreciative of the staff's concern and efforts on our behalf. And we are blessed that we got my husband home safely and he is recuperating nicely. Thank you, Royal Hawaiian.
