“Two years send still great except for the bed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2013

This was our second trip staying at this lovely hotel. The lobby, rooms, and grounds are wonderful. The dolphins entertained us for hours. The breakfast was great on the patio. The staff was friendly and efficient. But! The bed still soft and in need of replacing. A shame that the bed was the only downside to this hotel.

We had a special wedding anniversary to celebrate and the Kahala was the perfect holiday retreat. The rooms are well designed and spacious. The staff were all helpful and thoughtful. The beach is beautiful. We enjoyed the cabanas. When we booked the hotel we didn't realise we were arriving in the middle of Thanksgiving festivity season, so it was very busy everywhere, but also a nice experience for us. The shuttle service to Waikiki and the shopping centre worked well including going to the local Kahala Mall. The Veranda Café and bar was our favourite for relaxed evening meals. The menu for the Italian restaurant in the hotel was a bit unusual and a little sterile, which was a surprise as the rest of the hotel, had a comfortable and beautifully designed welcoming décor. We look forward to returning.

Room Tip: Peaceful looking over the golf course with a Lanai

Our time at the Kahala resort was outstanding! The staff were extremely helpful and very friendly had some great conversations with the bar tenders. Swimming with the dolphins was awesome and we never got tired of watching them swim past our balcony. Thank you for making our stay special and we will see you again.

Room Tip: We overlooked the dolphins and it was wonderful to watch them everyday.

Last few days we stayed here as a family and it was beautiful. You dont need to go anywhere else. The buffet breakfast is devine and pleanty. The lagoon with various water creatures is amazing and lying on the foreshore was a lovely peaceful way to spend your days. There is a small shopping centre just up the road which is perfect if you feel like doing some retail thereapy. I had a few hiccups with my travel card but with the assistance of some wonderful staff Bart and Carlos they were very kind and supportive. Rooms are a great size and we really enjoyed our stay. It is a tad pricey but it is a lovely resort away from the hustle and bustle of downtown.I would definitely stay there agin but I would book in advance.

Room Tip: all rooms are a great size. "garden room" was plenty big and if you want a beach view just...

We have been coming to the Kahala for over 30 years for the Christmas holidays and have stayed with it though all the changes. Many of the staff remain the same year after year and remember you. This year, with new management, the hotel seems well run and our stay has been exceptionally pleasant. The staff is eager to please and happy to accommodate your needs (in my case, vegan food). We love that it's a relatively small, quiet hotel away from busy Waikiki but close to great restaurants and shopping. It's a wonderful place for families and small children as well as adults. We look forward to it every year; it feels like a second home!

Booked two 2-bedroom Ocean Front Suites for a family of 7 -- pricey but worth it! The 2-bedroom suites consist of a master bedroom (king bed) and a normal ocean front room (2 twin beds) with a living room connecting the two. Here's my review:

Booking:
Book in advance taking advantage of their 60 or 90 day advance booking. I did mine 8 months in advance and got the 45% off Suite rate

Ocean Front Suite Amenity Program:
1. Free pickup/drop to HNL Airport. I had a rental because we wanted to travel, but they reached out to offer a SUV pick up so I know it was available.

2. Welcome amenity (chilled mint towels at check-in, stuffed dolphin toys for the kids, fresh fruit and chocolate macadamia nuts in the room as we walked in)

3. Evening appetizer and cocktail in suite -- this is awesome, just tell them what cocktails or kids drinks you want in the afternoon and they are delivered to your suite along with a changing appetizer every day (mini pasta salad on day 1, ratatouille day 2 . . .etc)

4. Daily breakfast at Plumeria Beach house (2-bedroom suites -- we got four breakfast per suite included in the package). We are early birds and got there at 6:30am when in opens -- gets busy starting at 7:30am, so be ready if you are late breakfast kind of person. The selection is great -- recommend the fresh papaya from the Big Island and the Kalasadas (doughnut).

5. Newspaper and morning coffee/tea delivery to suite -- love this. Got it delivered at 6am, served in a thermal carafe to keep in warm along with the local newspaper.

6. Complimentary beach cabana -- these are really loungers on the beach with pull up covers to block the sun. You get a 2-chair lounger per suite. Best part is they give you flag poll -- raise the flag and the staff comes over to take your drink/food order. We used it today and the guy was there in under 3 minutes!

Videos/Pictures:
See my uploaded video (uploaded separate from this review) to see the 2-bedroom Ocean Front Suite
See my photos of the view from each of the rooms.

Room Tip: If you can afford the Suites, the Suite Amenity Program is awesome!

These guys are obviously trading on the legacy of fame and fortune of the days gone by. While it is a great spot just out of Waikiki and provides a sense of tranquility and seclusion. The best parts for me were the beach and the grand entrance.

Apart from that, the staff seemed detached with a hint of attitude. Right from the point of driving up for check-in. Since all we could get for a rental car at the time was a minivan, we were greeted with some shock when we advised we were staying and not just "dining" as they suggested when we drove up.

At near $US900 / night our room was comfortable but a tad too traditional, with some attention to detail lacking. The beds were also too soft and lumpy, with amenities such as body wash, soaps etc etc were limited compared to other hotels of this ilk. Even water, was NOT included.

The fitness centre was well equipped, but the locker rooms/steam and sauna didn't look as though they had been revitalised since the 60's when this hotel was built.

We did not eat at the signature restaurant, instead favouring Arancino, which is located within the resort, but is a separate entity.

So if you like things a little olde worlde (but dont expect the quality standard to be associated with it), with a sense of celebrity and exclusivity (yes there were celebs there when I was staying)... go for it. But compared to other hotels like the Park Hyatts or the Andaz or W's this just doesn't cut it.

Oh... and noisy a/c
But nice big double bathrooms

Room Tip: Don't choose a "partial ocean view" room. While you still get good views of the sea...

Aloha buffstah~ Thank you for choosing to stay with us. It is so nice to hear that you found our secluded beaches and our grand lobby pleasing, however we are sorry to hear that you felt that our bellman were suggesting you were not staying at the hotel. Our bellman assist both hotel guests and restaurant guests, it was certainly not their intention to suggest you were just dining. It is really disheartening to hear your disappointment with your stay, while it is not the typical feedback we receive, we don't wish for even one of our guests to experience anything less than our typical Kahala treatment and we sincerely apologize for your experience. Thank you again for expressing your concerns - we appreciate it - and we are truly sorry that you left disappointed. We so hope for the opportunity to deliver the true Kahala experience for which we are known sometime in the future. With kind regards and many thanks again, The Kahala Hotel & Resort Team.
