“Could Have Been Great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2013

Hotel is a first class property, as one would expect from a Leading Hotels of the World---so why only three stars from me? Because for $500 a night I'd like to take a swim in the pool, virtually impossible with hordes of Japanese toddlers being pulled around in inflatable rafts and when I say hordes I mean hordes, like 20-30 blow up rafts of various sizes. Now I realize that without these Japanese tourists upscale hotels like The Kahala might as well shut their doors, but for those of us in the minority, older folks who are looking for a true resort experience, the 90% majority, all of whom seem to have a toddler in tow, pretty much take that option off the table. Hope this review helps another traveller not make the same mistake I did. Too bad, Kahala could have been great!

Aloha bigmikefromLA~Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us and for letting us know that you feel we are a first class property. We are sorry to hear that you felt that your stay was a disappointment. Hawaii is definitely a popular vacation spot for Asian travelers, but we do have travelers from all over the world and we are grateful for all who choose to stay with us. We also pride ourselves in being a family friendly hotel, we often times have multi generations staying with us at the same time. I have brought up your concerns of too many flotation devices in the pool to management, and although we cannot restrict all flotation devices from the pool we will limit the amount. We hope to welcome you back again and wish you warm aloha! From all of us at The Kahala Hotel & Resort.

First trip to Hawaii for wife and me. Stayed two nights before our cruise around the islands. It was awesome. From the greeting by the valet parkers to the bellman's timeliness with luggage delivery and retrieval, the front desk staff, the restaurant and bar staff, pool staff, and even a conversation with one of the dolpin trainers was delightful. It's a great resort, a little past Diamondhead in a high end neighborhood surrounded by a private golf club (not available for guest play). Mr.Sweeney and his team have quite a gem, and while more expensive, you truly do get what you pay for. Congrats and keep it up. Hope to be back!

We had three things happen that I find totally acceptable at a 5 star property.

First I noticed on the second day of our trip (after pre-paying for our stay) on Expedia that the hotel had re-charged my room rate. And it wasn't just a hold it was a $4,000 cleared charge that the hotel needed 5 days to reverse. They admitted to the mistake. As if to rub it in the hotel continued to hold amounts on my credit (impacting my available balance) of $9,000. The manager admitted the holds were excessive but had no explanation. He said "it seems totally excessive". I agreed given I had been charged twice for my rooms and spent only $2,000 while at the property that $13,000 was "totally excessive".

Next while moving a dresser to use a power socket for my laptop I noticed a large red stain that seemed to have flowed from the headboard down to the carpet. My wife and I both thought it was blood (it had gone dark brown) the head of house keeping agreed, then disagreed. The on duty manager said it was red grease. we were skeptical and irrespective it was disgusting.

The nail in the coffin was that my wife sent out her white jeans for cleaning and the came back as if they had been dropped in the dirt. They were filthy. It was the last straw for me. I complained about all this and was given a $300 room credit or a 3% discount on our entire stay. It just did not seem like enough.

If you want to be out of Honolulu head to Turtle Bay, if you don't care the Halekulani and Royal Hawaiian are just much better hotels. Given our experience The Inn at Schofield Barracks would have been a better choice.

This is one of the best resorts on Oahu. I've stayed at luxury hotels in Waikiki and Ko Olina. Ko Olina is too far away from the action and Waikiki is too much in the middle of the action, but Kahala is just right. It doesn't have the hustle and bustle of Waikiki, but it's only 10 minutes away. The rooms are huge and luxurious. The bed was one of the best I've laid my head on! The pool is a bit small, but their beach is perfect. There is a reef right in front of the hotel, so no big waves and it's so easy to snorkel and/or kayak out there. The service was excellent and friendly. This is definitely my new hotel destination on Oahu!

I rarely take the time to write reviews, but after spending part of last week at the Kahala I feel compelled to share what a great experience that my wife and I had. Yes it's expensive - but for us it was worth every dollar.

The location is excellent, the grounds are beautiful and the beach is perfect. If you are looking for restaurants and shops nearby, stay in Waikiki which is about a 15 minute drive away. If you want to get a beach cabana and forget about the world, stay at the Kahala.

Our room was nice. It was clean, tastefully decorated without being over the top and quiet. The staff was warm and friendly to a person and discreet. Each and every staff person went out of their way to make you feel welcome.

We will definitely be back to the Kahala for another visit. For us, it was a top 2 hotel experience.

We spent 3 days/nights here in August and loved it. The setting in Kahala is quiet and attractive. The resort is compact and it was busy, but we never felt crowded out or overlooked. Even when there were functions on, things were business as usual for the hotel guests. All the facilities, from the beach and pool to the rooms, were beautifully clean and felt fresh, and the staff were quick to tidy up at the end of the day. The public areas are airy and welcoming.

We had a very spacious room looking out over the golf course and the hills beyond, and it was lovely sitting out on the lanai enjoying the cooling breezes. The bathroom was large and very well equipped. We dined at Plumeria Beach House, The Verandah and Hoku's, and found the food to be excellent, and for us, genuinely different. One of the aspects of the hotel we liked best was the staff. They were very pleasant while always being professional, were never at a loss, and really added to the holiday atmosphere. Their recognition of our birthdays was very much appreciated.

Plenty of families and children were at the hotel, which we didn't mind at all, but it's something you may want to bear in mind if you're looking for a couples-type romantic getaway. There are dolphins and other sea creatures to watch in the ponds at the centre of the resort, which can be surprisingly relaxing.

Special recommendation: have afternoon tea at The Verandah.

Indeed, it is also the most expensive place I have ever been. However, it is worthy every single dollar. When you arrive you directly get this Hawaiian feeling of joy and happyness. They welcome you with several gifts. It's just amazing. Service is perfect in every single detail. Its ambience breathtaking. Kahala is located 10 minutes away from Waikiki but in comparison to Waikiki hotels it offers a lot of privacy and relaxation (not commerzialized at all). Pool and (private) beach are directly connected. Breakfast buffett offers a great variety and is very delicious. There is also a pool with 6 dolfins and other beautiful fishes. As animal-loving people we thought the pool is too small but dolfins looked quite happy. And there are probably a lot of other nice things that I didn't mention. We thing this place is unique and if you can afford it you should definitely come!

Room Tip: Upgrade for hooneymooners - was very nice. Many, many thanks!
