Owner description: Verde Canyon Railroad is Arizona’s longest-running nature show. The four-hour scenic ride includes views of Sinagua Indian ruins, waterfowl, wildlife and a 680-foot man-made tunnel. The train follows the upper Verde River and is ideally situated above the heat of the desert and below the cold of Arizona’s high country. In the spring and summer see Great Blue Heron and black hawks; fall and winter bring brightly-colored foliage and the arrival of migratory bald and golden eagles.

This attraction is worth every penny it costs. The train trip leaves the station near Clarkdale, takes you through the Verde Valley, alongside the Verde River, through a mountainside tunnel, and to the ranch known as Perkinsville (a set that was used in the movie "How the West Was Won") where the engine switches from one end to the other, and then retraces the track back to Clarkdale. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking, the guides aboard each of the open-air cars are entertaining, the enclosed cars are comfortable, and the food and drinks offered are reasonable. Our family and guests have taken this trip every year for the past seven years, and look forward to this year's trip.

The Verde Canyon Railroad trip is a four hour excursion one should not miss doing if you are in the area. I gave the trip as a gift to my husband for our 30th wedding anniversary. I purchased 1st class tickets which were $25.00 more than coach but in our opinion, well worth the extra money!
I had also called ahead and spoke with Marj in reservations, who was excellent and very accommodating, and arranged for a flower arrangement to be on our table when we boarded with a note from me to my husband. And they were beautiful!! And they lasted the whole week in our hotel room which was nice as well.
Not only were we treated very well, but they also surprised us with two other very nice things. It was very unexpected but very much appreciated!! So thank you Marj!
We were on the Flagstaff car and our hostess was Suzanne who was very informative and made great drinks!!!
Our host on the outside open air car was Jason, who happened to also be one of the engineers of the train which made him a great source of information.
They both made the trip very enjoyable!
We went on our trip on August 27th and the weather was perfect! Having booked the 1st class ticket, you receive a glass of champagne or apple cider upon the train leaving the station. Then almost right away, a buffet of "appetizers" is available for 2 hours. We did not eat lunch as we had read that there was lots of food. And we were very glad we were hungry as the food was very plentiful and very good. It includes wings, ceaser salad, sandwiches, veg's and dip, cheese and crackers and deep fried brownies bites which were delectable!!! We had a full car and I noticed when they were removing the food, there was still some left over.
The best side to sit on is the right side (facing the engine) but these seats are for two people. Two very comfy chairs and a table. The other side is for larger groups - two love seats and a table between. But everyone walks around and of course you can go out to the open air car and have any view you wish.
Unfortunately, we did not see any of the wildlife, except cows and horses, but the scenery was so outstanding that it didn't matter.
I would recommend this trip to anyone and would even do it again if we were ever so luck to be able to return to Sedona!!!

“Can't wait to go again”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2011

One of our great surprises was our trip last year on the Verde Canyon Railroad. We didn't take the most expensive seats, but food and drink was served in every class.
Not only is the scenery spectacular, but watching the eagles soar around us was thrilling. This trip is probably best during Fall or Spring, but we would go again at any time. Reservations are required since it is a very popular ride.
The attraction also has special festivals for chocolate lovers, tequila drinkers or the Grape Train Escape. Those are more expensive.

“Very nice trip”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2011

We booked the first class car and made a mistake of eating before the train departed. Once aboard, we found the mini sandwiches and chicken wings would have killed the hunger pangs very nicely. Brandi, our quide/naturalist was very informative and a great source of information on the canyon and river and wildlife. I am interested in trains so part of the trip was specifically to ride on the vintage cars pulled by old engines. I enjoyed that almost as much as the scenery.

The trip back from Perkinsville is a little repetitive, but the light was changing toward sunset and the rain clouds in the distance made for some interesting photography. It also allows some time to just relax and not worry about "missing" something.

All of the train crew were professional and friendly. I would recommend the trip if you are in the area.

We took the Verde Canyon Railroad Tour while we were staying in Sedona. It was so relaxing and enjoyable. We had a tour guide named Brandy. We loved her and her pig tails. What a girl and so talented and smart! The Bald Eagle sightings were awsome, not to mention the views. We have some beautiful pictures and video of the train ride through the tunnel and when you can see the engines turning the curves way in front of you. I highly recommend buying the package with the Frist Class Car that includes dinner and an open bar - take your drinks to the outside car and have a wonderful time. We met so many interesting people and would do this trip again!. I woudn't reommend the Blazin M for dinner. We bought it as a package, but probably could have found a nicer restaurant. The show was quite "corney" and time could have been spent going to Jerome or shopping in the quaint stores around this area.'
