We traveled to Newport for a long weekend (Thursday to Monday) for our anniversary. We have a hotel in Newport that we typically stay in and love, but it was booked for Saturday night, so we turned to the Hotel Viking for the second part of our stay. The rates, while expensive, were reasonable compared to other nice hotels in the area. Let's start with the good: we were pleased throughout our stay with the help and courtesy of the valets, and the breakfast at One Bellevue was decent. Now to the bad: when we booked we reserved a King room with a fireplace, and upon arrival confirmed with the front desk staff that our room had a fireplace before going up to our room. Upon arriving in our room it was quite evident that the room did NOT have a fireplace. We immediately called and asked to be moved to a room with a fireplace, as promised - they said they were full and could move us the following day. Unacceptable, but they said they were sold out and there was nothing they could do. There was also no hotel manager on staff (on a Saturday evening) to speak with, so there was literally NOTHING they could do to remedy the situation until the following day (Sunday). On top of it, the front desk staff were flat out rude to my husband over the phone. Put an absolutely HORRIBLE taste in our mouthes about the hotel from the minute we arrived. Next, the bathroom was not fully cleaned. The sink and faucet handles were sticky and had a visible film on them. I called the front desk and asked if they could please send someone up to clean the room while we were out at dinner, and they said that they would. We returned to our room 2 hours later to find that in fact they never sent anyone and our bathroom was still dirty. I cleaned it myself. The next morning we spoke with the hotel manager, Monique, who offered to remedy the situation by moving us for our second night's stay, blamed the rooming mix-up on the woman who checked us in-she was new and in training (we later checked her business card that she gave us upon check-in stating she was the "Front Desk Supervisor" so that was a straight up lie from Monique), and just said "that isn't the way we operate" when we told her about the dirty bathroom and the lack of cleaning that occurred when we requested it. All in all, it's a big hotel with a lot of amenities, in a decent location, with terrible service. We give it 2 stars because the valets were very nice and helpful, and the waitresses during breakfast were nice. We will never go back and will never recommend the hotel to anyone else.

Our worst fears are when nothing seems to go right for a guest that stays at the Hotel Viking. Our hotel management team is always extremely concerned and upset when guests have a totally unpleasant experience from the time they arrive until the time they check out. And, unfortunately words cannot change how your experience reflects this. All we can say is we are sorry we could not live up to your expectations from the décor to the noise from the room next door that kept you awake.
