“Disappointing room”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2011

I have to be honest and say we were very disappointed in our stay at The Hotel Viking. It was the least memorable place on our tour of New England and the smallest room of the entire holiday and the most expensive accommodation! Being English we are not used to huge rooms, but our double room was hardly big enough for 2 quite small adults! The bathroom was also tiny with no rails or hooks to hang towels - so after showering towels just had to be left on the floor of the shower! When I mentioned this to reception they said it was a design fault of the hotel! I did enquire if it would be possible to move to a larger room with more hanging space, but was told this was only possible if we paid for an upgrade. The space situation was made worse by the fact that we got absolutely SOAKED on our first walk out in Newport and had nowhere to hang our very wet clothes. The receptionist did offer to tumble dry our wet jeans, which did help out. We didn't eat at the hotel so can't comment on the food, but overall I don't think I would recommend this hotel in Newport.

Thank you for your honesty about your stay. We also are sorry that this wasn’t what you expected. During the process of renovating the Hotel Viking, the designers had to make the best use of the historic layout and design. Overall your stay at the hotel was not a good experience and hopefully we can make some necessary adjustments so that new guests will have ample space for their things. Again we apologize.

My husband surprised me with a two day trip to The Viking as we had such a great stay here in April. I was a little apprehensive because at the last minute he was only able to book a Manor room which is smaller than the Estate room we stayed in last time. The front desk staff couldn't have been nicer and told us they would try to find an Estate room for us if we didn't like the Manor room. They were pretty confident that we would like it, though and they were right! Yes, it was small but perfectly laid out and more than adequate with a lovely view of the harbor in the distance. The bathroom was actually a little larger than the one we had last time in our bigger room!
The whole reason we like this property is because of the unique and elegant feel of it. It does not have cookie cutter boxy rooms. If that is what you want, go to a Holiday Inn. But if you want yesteryear charm and gracious service, you can't do better than the Viking!
Thank you for the lovely anniversary card and cupcakes, too!!

What a delightful surprise it was for you to enjoy and celebrate a memorable anniversary here at the Hotel Viking. We are pleased that our Front Desk staff provided you with those special touches that made it even nicer for you and your husband. We look forward to your return soon.

We stayed here for a couple of nights and enjoyed it very much. Unlike other hotels on our trip they arranged connecting rooms which was appreciated. Rooms spacious and comfortable. Bathroom tiny but good enough. Nice swimming pool. Bit of a mixed bag with reception stuff. One young man and woman charmingly helpful. A couple of the others rather sullen and unhelpful, particularly when we returned to check into our second room at 4pm to find that it still wasn't clean and available. The receptionist somehow made us feel it was unreasonable to think it might be. An apology would have been nice. Certainly an indication when it might be rather than "we don't give time estimates". Really? By 4 I think you should. But still a nice hotel.

We are so sorry you did not receive an apology when there was a bit of a delay in getting into your second room at 4 pm. We are pleased though that you did enjoy your room and the hotel in general during your stay.

We went for a three day weekend and had a great experience. Hotel is in a perfect location (a few blocks from harbor in a historic neighborhood) and felt like a hybrid between B&B and higher end hotel. Front desk staff gave helpful off-site breakfast suggestions (notably the Corner Cafe) when we asked. Pool and gym looked fine but we didn't have enough time to use them. Our room was recently renovated (3rd floor facing front of hotel), has a king sized bed and a really nice bathroom/shower.

Also really appreciated that front desk cheerfully let us keep our car in valet lot the afternoon after we checked out (without charging us for extra time). In terms of daily cost of valet parking - I was told of it when I booked my reservation and given how tight parking is in Newport I understood. And it was very convenient.

We wish all of our guests have a great experience when visiting us. Your description of us a hybrid is a keen analysis. We strive for comfort and elegance with close attention to detail so are pleased when a guest receives help and assistance from everyone they encounter at the hotel.

We are very appreciative of your comments about our beautifully designed rooms. One Bellevue is also a hidden treasure here in Newport. Chef Kevin Thiele is totally dedicated and committed to the restaurant being the “best around”. Thank you.

We stayed here twice. Once in June 2010 in a mansion suite. Mansion suite is advertised on the website and ours was very disappointing. Room was TINY, and dark. Supposedly renovated, and very expensive. Bathroom had a low ceiling and was also poorly lit. Fire alarm went off throughout the day and also at 2 AM. Second trip we knew what to expect, and got a room with just a King bed. Location is great, service is good, and breakfast is good. Go on some type of deal (spa deal, breakfast, etc.) Try the cheese shop across the street. Wonderful to walk around. The location is great, but be prepared to overpay for a room that isn't that great. PS: Internet isn't free!

Discovered thru TripAdvisor and really enjoyed our stay. Beautiful hotel. Room with antique furniture was decorated beautifully. Bed was sooooo comfortable. Room was definitely too small for two people so will request larger room next time we go. Staff pleasant & helpful. Great rooftop bar with entertainment. Walked into town and didn't have to deal with parking.
Just great!!!

7-27-11 How nice it is to know that social media sites offer a forum for guests to express their thoughts – and in your case, makes one want to book a getaway to the Hotel Viking. We have different size rooms with different room rates so we can offer accommodations depending on one’s choice. We offer a wide spectrum of amenities from our indoor pool, our seasonal rooftop bar, and special Spa Terre’ treatments. We continually encourage all of our associates to present themselves in a positive upbeat way to all of our guests.
