“Terrible attitude of staff....run like a prison”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2007

We booked three rooms in February for a two night stay in June on the eve of the 2006 Newport to Bermuda Ocean Race. It was an ideal location...but feel I should warn others of the then absurd attitude of the staff. We booked the rooms for our over flow sailboat crew (boat was at their marina). Most of us kept our luggage (duffles for the race) on the boat and took our toiletries and nightclothes to the room for a night's sleep. But despite the fact that we had pre-booked and pre-paid for the rooms four months earlier, the house keeping staff moved us out because we did not leave our luggage in the rooms during the day (we were tidy and quiet) and rerented the room to tourists who showed up on short notice. So when our tired crew members were ready to turn in after a long day of running errands and going to pre-race briefings, they were shocked to find strangers sleeping in their rooms. This policy of renting rooms out from under our noses was outrageous and we should have reported it to someone for a breach of contract...say the attorney general...but we tried instead to peaceably work things out and find other rooms. However, the management gave us the cold shoulder and defintely took a corporate "we could care less attitude"...tough luck for you. And it took months to remove the excess charges on our hotel bill. Will never stay there again. It was such a terrible experience even after a year it is tough to forget. We were shafted. Also some of our crew got very sick after dinner there...something was not well cooked....hmm.

We stayed for only one night, but I know that if I ever want to have a nice hotel at the perfect location I will book there again! The bathroom was clean, which is a really important feature for me and the room was nice. And like I mentioned before the location was perfect! I do recommend it! I think the only bad thing about the hotel was the pool. The outside of the pool was pretty dirty..It looked like it could stand to be mopped or hosed down. Other than than we had a nice stay!

We just got back from our stay at the Newport Harbor Hotel and Marina and have zero complaints. We stayed in a room facing the Harbor which was a must for us (why bother if you're not going to face the Marina). The room was clean and nice, we had no problem with the staff at all. The room is close to everything and at night you don't have to take your car out (which we loved). You can always do what we opted for, we stayed at a less expensive hotel the second part of our trip -the Newport Inn and Spa in Middletown (only 10 minutes away, we also loved that place too).

We would definitely stay at the Newport Harbor Hotel and Marina again. In genteral, we loved Newport and plan on coming back (again and again).

We booked 3 nights here, July 4-7, through Priceline for a song. $100/night, if I can post that.

Anyway, the location is great. The rear of the hotel is a harbor right in town. The whole back of the hotel is private for guests and people with boats docked at the hotel's marina. We had a perfect view of the fireworks from Fort Adams. You can walk out of the front of the hotel are right on Thames Street. From there you can pretty much walk to any part of Newport's downtown area. Aquidneck island is pretty small so most points of interest are no more than 15 or 20 minutes away.

The room was clean and the staff was very friendly and courteous. There is a staff member there just to help find your way around the city, recommend restaurants,etc...The room itself was pretty straight forward. We had a room in the front of the hotel overlooking the parking lot, but beyond that is Thames Street and Trinity Church.

And, BTW, the hotel has a very strict noise policy that is clearly posted at the front desk. If they receive a noise complaint after 11pm, they will warn the first time and the second time you will be escorted from the hotel by the Newport police. It seems most people notice that since the hotel was absolutely silent at night.

EVICTED from the commodor suite ($844 per night) after 1 notification (approx. 12:15am) at our our door from an extremely rude front desk clerk for noise complaints. No prior phone call, no security warning, nothing. We made a phone call to the front desk about the rudeness of the hotel clerk and was told we would have to speak to a manager in the morning. We kept quiet and were almost asleep when 4 Newport police officers and 1 security guard were at our door 45 minutes later (1:00am) to evict 4 business men age 35-37. One police officer actually said he didn't know why they were called. The hotel DOUBLE BILLED us for the room ($1,688.44), which caused much confusion with the dispute department at Discover card. The dispute is still pending....

Rude staff, zero tolerance noise policy and a mangement staff that needs a dose of common sense. Stay elsewhere! and please continue to post any reviews of this nature...

I am amazed at the feedback from others on the hotel. My husband and I wanted a romantic weekend away at a reasonable price and that is what we had. We booked the romance by the sea package which included a bottle of champagne, full breakfast both mornings, $85.00 credit towards dinner one evening and two tickets to area attractions. We had a marina view from our room which was georgous and the bed was AWESOME!!! Fluffy clean, crisp linens and the bathroom was beautiful with marble tile and a cute pedestal sink with lots of spa type soaps and lotions. The front desk was friendly and pleasant and the concierge was extremely helpful with advise on things to do. This hotel is perfect in location, has safe secure parking and for the money, is very reasonable. I would stay there again in a minute. It is not posh-posh like some of the other Newport hotels but it's a great value.
