“Great Location - Good Choice for Newport Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2010

Stayed here for one week with extended family in August. All rooms were on the 4th floor - some with balconies - some not. All rooms were very clean, very comfortable, bathrooms were small yet comfortable. Bathrobes, Keurig coffee makers and free water bottles daily were a nice touch. Only negatives about the room were the A/C system although very good - was loud when cycling on and off & the balcony wasn't really usable or pretty - concrete wall that you can't see over when sitting in the chairs - which are in front of the A/C blowing out hot exhaust - the plus side is the beach towels dried in minutes! This hotel is in a fantastic location - you can walk to visitors center, shops, restaurants and Starbucks was conveniently located across the street for a.m. coffee. We only needed the car to go to the beach or the mansions. The indoor pool was very good for the kiddies & the pool deck was nice too. The location and very affordable price make this hotel a good choice. Staff were kind and helpful - housekeeping was too.

Reservations were made for a room with a balcony for 3 nights. Arrived to find out they gave the room away. Service behind the front desk was cold and uninterested in helping. After a long discussion we received a credit for our non balcony room. The room was small, the swimming pool was dirty. The bathroom looked like it was at least 40 years old, musty and moldy. The location can't be beat with the boats docking right at the hotels docks. Walking distance to all kinds of restaurants. We were there for the Jazz Festival and gone all day. Next year we will spend our money elsewhere.

I think your reviewers may be too picky. I want a hotel to be clean, comfortable, conveniently located, and luxurious enough so I know I'm not at home. NHHM was all of these things and more. You cannot beat the location -- convenient to everything, We walked everywhere, never needing the car because NHHM was like the hub of a wheel, with all of our excursions flowing from it like spokes.
Yes, the bathrooms are small, but the room was generous in size and very comfortable. I spend more time in the room than in the bathroom, so I was happy. Maid service was excellent and unobtrusive -- more so than in any other hotel I've visited. My husband and I enjoyed the 2 complimentary bottles of water per day (worth what? $3? But a very nice and appreciated touch!), the lovely terry robes and 2 newspapers in the morning. We got a fabulous midweek rate, during the week between music festivals, and paid $155/night for a king room with not a great view (street side), which didn't matter to us, so I think it was well worth it.
Front desk folks were not effusively friendly, but there was a lovely aroma in the lobby every time we walked in that felt welcoming. Never got around to going to the pool (too busy walking around Newport), but we did have breakfast buffet at Pier 49, adjacent restaurant, and it was just ok. We will definitely return to NHHM next time we are in Newport.

The customer service was very disappointing from the security/parking to the main desk. Overall the hotel is overpriced, the only positive is the location.

I'm guessing that most of the reviewers who disliked this hotel stayed in un-renovated rooms. Ours was perfectly lovely, on the first floor facing the marina, with two chairs on the lawn just outside of the door. I'm a stickler for cleanliness (#1 priority in a hotel room, call me crazy) and our room was absolutely fine. The bathrooms are tiny. Agreed.

We came to Newport for the Folk Festival (which inflated the room rates) and didn't plan to spend much time at the hotel, but we ended up with some extra time to explore the city and relax in our room. The hotel staff were extremely friendly and ready with helpful recommendations.

I booked this hotel 2 nights - king room and balcony. The only positive about this hotel is the location. The room was average, the bathroom was old and there was mold around the tub. I paid top $ for a balcony which was a joke - it was small with two chairs no table and there was an foul odor. When the A/C was on you could not sit out because of the hot exhaust of the A/C. Tatiana was very nice and welcoming - Billy was not friendly at all. Unless there is a significant remodel, I will not return to this hotel.

My boyfriend I stayed at this hotel for a 3 day weekend. The staff was efficient but not overly helpful. We had a corner room with a view of the harbor & marina which was great! The rooms were kind of small, but that's to be expected in an older downtown hotel, especially one that is right on the water. You can basically walk anywhere in downtown Newport conveniently from this hotel, for this reason I could justify paying the $300/night. The bathroom is extremely small & did not have a vent to run while showering, which made it very hot and humid to do your hair & make-up in the bathroom afterwards.
Pier 49 which is connected to the hotel doesn't look like much when you pull in but when you head to Bowen's wharf you can see that it is quite the busy little outdoor bar. The Barking Crab is directly across the street form the hotel. They offer $1 oysters at the bar all day, which is great. They also have a mahi sandwich and lobster b.l.t. to die for. Panera bread is very close as well if you're looking for a lighter fair breakfast within walking distance.
They have an indoor pool and what looked like to be a deck taht you can lounge out on over looking the marina. If we had more time I would have taken advantage of the lounge chairs and sun.
Overall we had a nice visit & I would consider staying at this hotel again.
