I spent 2 night at the Marriott in Newport in July, the hotel is in an excellent location, steps away from the bustling pier area. Unfortunately this is its only best feature: the rooms are smallish and although the decor was nautical enough, there was little else charming about the hotel. The noise from the air conditioners was incredible and my friend and I had trouble sleeping even with ear plugs .When we asked if there were other rooms that might be less noisy we were told that all rooms were more or less the same and the only thing we would have changed was the view( we could see the port , but also the loading dock below and the garbage compactors were just under our winows).
The pool is absolutely nothing special and the breakfast area is hermetically sealed: one would think that in a place like Newport they would have outside seating at least in the Summer, and the pool could have been built with sliding doors and windows and an outside deck. No such luck. the design is the classic Marriot " nuclear reactor design"( my own definition after seeing the Marriot at Times Square and the one in Atlanta, with the elevators going up and down inside the giant empty space like nuclear fuel rods): empty giant lobby with all balconies overlooking an orgy of cold marbe.Everything considered I would pick a more charming and less corporate hotel the next time, for thesame or less $$
