“Great location and beautiful property, but..”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2013

Stayed there just after New Years. The hotel is beautiful located on Goat Island by Newport. The staff was friendly and cooperative. The room was clean, the lobby bar, though empty, was really nice and looked like it could be fun. I would stay there again without hesitation. You'd probably want to drive or use the hotel shuttle to get into town, but being surrounded by water with great views more than makes up for that.

Now for some negatives. I had a feeling I was being nicheled and dimed. On check in, we learned there was a mandatory $25 property fee which included use of the shuttle, exercise room, self parking and a couple other things, I wouldn't have been surprised if it included use of the elevator (It didn't. The elevator was free). One morning there was no charge for the muffins that accompanied the free coffee, the next day they were $2.00. If the room rate were $25 - $35 more, we would have stayed there anyway, but this way it looked like the Hyatt was about $30 less than the Marriott in town. It was more annoying than a deal breaker.

The room, though clean with a great view was weird. It was laid out to take advantage of the view, but as a result the space wasn't used well and it seemed cramped and over filled with furniture. The bathroom wall was partially clouded glass block, so if it was used it during the night, it partially lit up the room.

Room Tip: Ask for the view you want and check for extra charges.

Spent several nights here in Fall 2012 and thoroughly enjoyed Newport. Lots to see and do for the whole family.

We had several meals at the hotel and really liked the quality and presentation, including a great clam bake with lobster and all the traditional fixings. It was excellent. Also, the location of the hotel is unique with wonderful water views from almost every vantage point. It is close to shopping, the marinas and lots of restaurants.

On the other hand, at check-in our fully prepaid reservation was botched by the hotel staff and we were made to feel very unwelcome. The whole situation was handled badly and management did little to address the problem. To add insult to injury, the room we were given was small and had not been fully cleaned.

Next time in Newport, we will probably try another place.

I just recently stayed at this hotel with my family. I found this hotel to be great with fantasatic services! The location of this hotel is on Goat Island and it was not at all far from all the tourist attractions, restaurtants and shopping! Even though we were there off season I found it to be was very nice and there was always plenty to do.

Room Tip: I stayed in the Capt. Qrtrs section of the hotel. I was able to view two types of rooms while at my...

Dear Trip Advisor Guest

Thank you for you posting. It's always great to hear when our guests enjoyed their stay with us. I truly believe that Newport is at it's best during the winter season. No traffic, no long waits for restaurants and still plenty to do. We hope to see you back again in the near future.

Girls one-day getaway for fun, good food and spa treatments. The hotel staff was very curtious, the hotel was clean, the room was fabulous. The spa treatments were awesome and everything we hoped they would be. Can't say enough about the staff. Great time.

We had a great clean comfortable water view room. The bed was very comfortable with lots of pillows. We had the breakfast buffet which has an omelette station and cooked to order pancakes. The rest of the buffet was great as well. Though we didn't use it, the indoor pool and fitness area all looked clean and up to date. We would stay here again for sure.

We planned a surprise overnight for a special friend who is going through some health issues.
I faxed the manager of the hotel and received a response the next day from Cassandra, the lead reservation specialist. She took care of everything allowing me to pay for the room in advance and see to it that any incidentals would be billed to my account directly. She upgraded them to a beautiful room. The professionalism and the way my friends were treated was greatly appreciated. They had a beautiful stay at the Hyatt Newport. We look forward to visiting that wonderful resort some day for ourselves. Kudos for an excellent staff and property!!!

Decided to go to Newport for a last minute family getaway and found an incredible deal through the Hyatt.com site. We ended up with a 2 bed 2 bath suite with the resort fee waived for less than the price of a standard room. the view was spectacular - lighthouse, ocean. the room spotless and massive. The beds were very comfortable; our 7 year old slept 12 hours straight one night thanks to the absolute quiet, the blackout curtains and the delicious king bed.

We ate in the restaurant and ordered room service both. Room service was fast, ridiculously over priced but that's always the case. You're going to pay $30 for a soda, chicken tenders and a beer if you order roomservice. if that's a problem for you, don't stay at a hotel. The restaurant service was good and the view great. The food at the breakfast buffet was fine, not spectacular but perfectly fine. The omelet station was very understaffed. The poor chef was alone and cooking omelets, waffles and pancakes. At one point there were 12 people backed up waiting to order. However, once I actually got my omelet - delish. There could have been more fresh fruit but then again, the raspberries were excellent.

The pool (indoor) was just what we needed. nothing big or fancy but perfect for a quick dip and not too crowded. The towels were lovely large beach towels.

This weekend they waived the 'resort fee' for us so our wifi and shuttle bus and water bottles (2 a day) were complimentary! We used the shuttle and the driver was very nice. The wifi worked well and free bottled water and tea/coffee was a nice touch.

Overall this is an excellent hotel to go to in the off season. We stayed here once before several years ago at New Years and had a similarly lovely experience. I've heard this place is great in the summer too - large outdoor pool, great location - but the prices are ridiculous and it's often completely booked up. One day we'll manage to make it up there for a sunny warm weekend. In the mean time though - January and February at the Hyatt Newport is the place to be! Our daughter did not want to leave.
