“Fantastic stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2011

We booked the hotel last minite the day before for 1 night. Everything about our stay was excellent from our check in, to the room and the location and grounds within the hotel. The hotel has amazing views during the day and spectacular sunsets. Although the weather was a bit hit and miss the pool and outdoor area looked very good. Although we saw all we wanted to see in Newport we would love to return to this hotel again.

I wanted so badly to like this hotel. It has great views and I usually love Hyatts, but there were too many negatives. I didn't mind the resort fee because I knew about it, but overall the value was not good. Here were our problems.
--Very noisy. It seems the whole purpose of this property is for weddings, which means if you are not a wedding guest, beware! Everyone knows how groups act out when they are part of a celebration so it takes over the lobby, bar, and hallway with groups of noisy people.
--Our room was laid out oddly. It had a nice alcove with a couch, table, and TV, but that meant we couldn't watch TV from the bedroom area and there wasn't comfortable seating for 2 in the alcove, so watching TV in the room was a problem. (Also, there was no HDTV anywhere -- rooms nor lobby bar). Also, the bath was tiny with pocket door, there was no bedside lamp for one side of the bed (which they fixed when I called them), and the bed frame was exposed. It just seemed they weren't paying attention to the details.
--We could not get housekeeping to come one day. They came early, and we asked them to come back in an hour, and then they never came back, even after 3 phone calls about it.
--Internet did not work. Once connected, it would drop you within 3-5 minutes, so it was worthless. They said they were getting a new provider, but I counsel caution on this.
--Our ceiling leaked, and they offered to move us, but it is so painful to move and since it was a once-in-a decade storm so we didn't move. But, it would seem they could have prevented this and could have fixed it before we were awake all night with drip-drip. (it was obvious from stains this had happened before.)
Overall, our opinion about this hotel was they count on weddings which is a captive audience so don't need to try to recruit/retain other customers. There are so many better options in Newport.

Dear TripAdvisor Guest:

Thank you for your recent posting on TripAdvisor.

Newport is indeed a destination resort and because of this many couples come to Newport for a destination wedding. Our hotel and location are ideal for this type of event and we certainly host many weddings throughout the year. Any typical weekend may be host to both wedding guests and individual travelers so there is always a mix of both. Our Conference Center is where the majority of wedding events take place but guests certainly have the option to utilize other areas of the hotel as they are hotel guests as well.

With regards to your concern on the lack of HDTV, we are currently looking into that option and hope to have it in place sometime this year. In addition we have switched internet providers since your visit and so far it has been working very well. In closing, my apologies for the ceiling leak. Our New England weather this spring has been quite challenging with very heavy rain. I know our staff offered to relocate you to another guestroom, this was a situation beyond our control.

Thank you for posting your comments and I certainly hope to have answered all of your concerns.

This resort is on a little peninsula pretty much by itself. It's a bit of a walk from resort to nearby dining and shopping in town. We stayed during off season, end of April. Very foggy and chilly, but being from western U.S., it was still enjoyable hearing the foghorns (which we don't have), and seeing the seagulls, and getting a taste of the northeast. There is a neat historical lighthouse on site, which my teenage son liked. We virtually had the place all to ourselves except for a large CVS Pharmacy convention going on. They were doing renovations to the outdoor pool area, it's going to be beautiful once all completed. The resort offers free shuttles into Newport town center for shopping and dining. The staff were super nice. Decor is marine blues and greens.

The only criticisms are that we did hear a lot of noise from other guests from our hotel room. The walls are paper thin. We could hear the guy's phone conversation pretty clear next door, almost felt like we were prying, but didn't mean to. When the other guests' doors slam, it's loud. The room we stayed in was a bit of a trek and a maze to get to from the main lobby/pool area. We even had to walk right thru the convention center lobby during the CVS Convention's black tie cocktail hour in our wet swimsuits to get to our room. Had to push our way thru a horde of people all dressed up...was very, very awkward.

Other than this, not a bad place at all.

Dear TripAdvisor Guest:

Thank you for your recent posting on Trip Advisor concerning your stay at the Hyatt Regency Newport Hotel & Spa.

Your comments are greatly appreciated with regards to our staff and I am so pleased you liked the décor of our hotel. Indeed our hotel is located on an “island” but in very close proximity to downtown Newport. Our shuttle van service is complimentary and available to our guests and runs frequently to the downtown area. With regards to your noise issue, we work very hard to create a quiet environment for our guests. We have security that continually patrols all areas of the hotel in an attempt to quiet down noisy neighbors before it becomes a problem. Again, my apologies for the disturbance.

Thank you for posting your comments and I hope we have the opportunity to host you again in the near future.

I should really have read the reviews before bidding on Priceline. Would not have risked the potential to have gotten this hotel. We booked a room for one night. Checked in at 10:30 pm and were gone by 8:30 am. Because we were a discount (Priceline) guest, we were hit with an additional $30.00 "resort fee". Which includes internet (what hotel doesn't provide free internet these days), use of the fitness area, "complimentary bottled water" (2 in the room to be exact), newspaper, yoga, etc. Bottom line is, the hotel is trying to recoup some of their "discount" pricing by hitting guests up with additional fees to cover what full paying guests receive in their price. As stated in one of the other comments from the manager, he listed the resort fee covered "other fun events". Well, it was pouring out, as stated above, we checked in at 10:30 and there were no "fun events" worth $3.00, let alone $30.00. So of all the services we used, it would have added up to about $1.50. We drank the bottled water and left the morning newspaper.

Also, upon checking out, we noticed a fee for Parking Valet. Funny thing is, we parked our own car upon checking in. Perhaps they slide that on to every bill in the hopes that no one will take the time to argue a $5.00 fee. Which we did not, because the front desk was packed upon leaving and we had a church service to get to...

The room was ok for $100.00, but I def would never return and pay full price. The room was small for such a high end hotel and noisy to boot. Have been to other hotels in the area and will go back to them in the future.

Dear TripAdvisor Guest:

Thank you for your recent posting on TripAdvisor.

Hopefully, other readers who peruse TripAdvisor reviews will now be fully informed with regards to our “Resort Fee”. Please allow me to comment on your statement “because we were a Priceline guest, we were hit with an additional $30.00 resort fee”. The resort fee is an additional fee that all of our guests pay (this is not limited to just Priceline guests.) As I am unable to retrieve your reservation, if you indeed were charged for valet parking and did not utilize valet, we will certainly make an adjustment on your bill, simply contact my office and we will reverse that charge. I am sorry that you only utilized our bottled water and self-parking; however, our resort fee also includes internet services, shuttle van service to and from downtown, unlimited local phone calls and 24-hour access to our Fitness Center. It also includes complimentary activities such as yoga and numerous children’s activities which are very well received by our guests.

As you may be aware, all guests using Expedia or Priceline sites must initial that they have read “additional charges may apply; e.g. resort fees, etc.) and your reservation will not be confirmed until this is done.

In closing, I hope to have answered all of your questions/concerns our Resort Fee issues.

This hotel is poised on the end of Goat Island with stunning views of the bay. Unfortunately, it did not meet our expectations. While we have occasionally shelled out over $500 per night for a room we have never been as disappointed as we were here. The spa was nice, room service adequate but room was noisy. The manager did address my complaints, but next time I would stay somewhere like the Chatham Bars Inn, comparably priced and much nicer.

booked using mileage points which maybe why we were put in room on first floor which is the hall the connects to elevator. We were woken several times by loud, drunken wedding guest on their way to their rooms. This was very disruptive and I am glad we did not pay the full are for this hotel. So beware if you think you are getting a "deal"
The staff were very attentive and polite. The food at the restaurant was very good and the views are beautiful!

Dear TripAdvisor Guest:

Thank you for your posting on TripAdvisor concerning your recent stay at the Hyatt Regency Newport Hotel & Spa.

With regards to your comments on being placed in a room on the first floor as you booked with mileage points, there is no correlation between the two. Guests reserving rooms using points are given a standard guestroom. We certainly upgrade based on availability and without the ability to look at your reservation I can only assume we were sold old so upgrades were limited. Your issue regarding noise has also been noted. We have security personnel who monitor the hotel after the evening’s events and do their best to quiet down noisy guests. Any calls made to our front desk staff about noise issues are addressed immediately and we do our very best to maintain a quiet, peaceful environment for everyone.

In closing, thank you for commenting that our staff was attentive and polite and for your positive ratings inr our restaurant. We are always pleased to read such glowing comments!

Thank you for your post and I hope I have addressed all of your concerns.

My wife and I got a deal to stay here via Expedia's unpublished rates. We paid under $80/night which made this stay worthwhile. Don't forget, regardless of the rate that you pay initially the hotel is going to tack on a $20/day resort fee, which includes internet, water in room, parking, and shuttle to downtown Newport. So, no matter what price you book at, realistically you are paying $20 more.
The hotel room was nice, as to be expected at a Hyatt. The view from our room was nothing to write home about, a view of the parking lot. The shower head in the bath was far too low. It would probably be sufficient for anyone less that 5’6”. The remote for the television also had numerous non-functioning buttons, which was disappointing. The internet is the room requested a password for access, I assumed this was supplied at a cost and needed to be requested via the Front Desk. At check out I realized that this was included in the Resort Fee. So, I suppose I could have used the “included” internet all weekend, had I known. The walls in our room seemed fairly thin, or at least not noise absorbing. Multiple times throughout the weekend we were awakened by noisy guests. At the same time, the ice machine was fairly close to our room and could be heard clearly while in bed. A room change was requested and but denied by the Front Desk.
The shuttle to and from Newport was very useful. It runs back and forth every half hour. The hotel is in a good location. Close to town, but not right in the center. Mansions and town are all within a 10 minute drive.

Dear TripAdvisor Guest~

Thank you for your recent posting on TripAdvisor.

In response to your comment concerning our “Resort Fee”, I am sorry that this additional fee seemed somewhat of a surprise to you. On sites like Expedia and Priceline, the guest must initial that additional charges may apply; e.g., resort fees or parking, etc. that are not included in your offer price. Our Resort Fee includes internet services, parking, shuttle van service to and from downtown, complimentary bottled waters and newspapers, unlimited local phone calls and 24-hour access to our Fitness Center. It also includes various complimentary activities such as yoga and many other fun events depending on the time of year. I do apologize that complimentary internet access was not explained to you upon check-in. All guests receive a list of what our Resort fee includes and I am sorry if we failed to provide this to you at check-in.

Thank you for posting your comments following your stay at the Hyatt Regency Newport Hotel & Spa and I hope we have the opportunity to host you again in the near future.
