“Beautiful View, Pleasant Service, Mediocre Food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2013

We had lunch here on a Thursday after the usual lunch hours so the service was attentive and pleasant. Unfortunately, the food quantity and quality left a bit to be desired. An order of crab cakes consisted of two small crabcakes of unknown origin served with a few strips of red and yellow peppers which had little or no dressing. When queried as to the type of crab the waitress was at a loss but did try to find out. The answer was lump and backfin crab. There were no lumps in the crabcakes which were somewhat tasteless and of small shreds of crab with a few stripes of remoulade over the top. The clam chowder was very thick with flour but tasty. A Lobster roll was full of chunks of lobster on a frankfurter type of soft white roll and served with a mass of mesclun greens, lightly dressed and covering most of the plate. The Safari room was nicely air conditioned while outside there were numerous umbrella shaded tables with a wonderful view of the water. The outside bar personnel were friendly and helpful. The prices were high but it is Newport and the summer.

“The lights are on, and nobody is home.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

The atmosphere in the Safari Room is superb. The lighting and decor are perfect. The view is incredible. Drinks at the bar are great. After moving from the bar to the dining area, it's all down hill from here.!
When we arrived at our table following a pleasant experience at the bar, we assumed the rest of the evening would continue on the same path. Boy were we wrong. Our waiter was aloof and completely disinterested in explaining the menu to us. His only comment was that the kitchen was completely out of tuna for apps and entrees. After placing our order we actually heard a witness go through the list of specials with the table behind us. Interesting, since we were just told that there were no specials. Our meals arrived and the bison burger and rib eye were terrible. The other two chicken dishes were edible but not great. When we asked the waiter to take the bison back to the kitchen because it was in edible, he complied and said that the kitchen had found one tuna entree and suggested that we have that instead. We actually laughed with each other and wondered where they "found" it. He did not apologize for the horrible food , and we watched him laughing with other staff members when we asked him to remove the charge from our bill. My sister and I both made attempts to find a manager, but it seemed to be a restaurant running itself with no one in charge.
Several hundred dollars later, we all agreed that we should have enjoyed drinks at the bar and cooked out at home!!

“Very good because the setting is excellent.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2013

Could not be a better place in Newport to watch the sun set over the water and enjoy a cocktail. Service is excruciatingly slow. Food is mediocre. Lobster bisque is not great but the lobster is. Cheese board not bad, ample. Rib eye ok. All of this matters little because the setting is awesome.

“Very disappointed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2013

My wife and I visited Newport recently and dined at the Safari Room one of the four evenings of our stay. Despite some flattering reviews we were very disappointed with the food and the service. We ordered a civiche appetizer, for example. Ceviche is supposed to be made of citrus marinated seafood, but all we received was a wine glass full of sour chopped peppers, onions and palm hearts. Oh, there were about three tiny pieces of some kind of fush each about the size of a pea. One of us ordered tuna. It was tasty and sizeable, but the presentation simply dumped on a bed of lettuce, was poor. An order of salmon was plopped on a mountain of some kind of tasteless cheese risotto. When asked what kind of cheese it was the uninformed server said it was "risotto cheese".
The service was impersonal on the part of the waiter (on the contrary, the hostess was very nice). A starter drink was provided , but when the glass was empty and dinner served the waiter never returned to ask if a refill was desired until after the main course was finished. I sat with an empty glass during the entire main serving. Clearly, the wait staff needs training and the chef should be informed that ceviche requires seafood and that accompaniments are just as important as the meat or fish on a plate.
The ambiance of the location is a major plus, but the noise levels were high and the overall service was poor. This place can be good, but leaves much to be desired. There are many much better alternatives in Newport.

“Great Food and Service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2013

The fish and lobster mac&cheese is delicious. As are the wine selection and drinks. The bartenders were very informative and quick to serve us. Great seats on the patio by the water.
