“Great Getaway at Architect's Inn”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2008

We just came home from a two night stay at Architect's Inn. This inn is located only a short walk from town, yet far enough away so that you can enjoy true tranquility. Our room was very large and the bathroom (with a claw-foot tub) was huge. Both were extremely clean, well appointed and meticulously decorated (as was the rest of the inn). Jim and Brian know the area extremely well and very both very helpful with recommendations. They made us feel right at home. We enjoyed ourseves so much that we are alredy talking about going back next year.

  • Liked — Location and Cleanliness
  • Disliked — Breakfast was too heavy - simple eggs, pancakes, etc. would have been preferable.

We recently had a very enjoyable stay at the Architects Inn. The house itself has a lovely, gracious atmosphere due to the period detail and beautiful furnishings. Our room was comfortable, the nights were peaceful and we awoke each day to the sound of bird song. This place is a real gem.

Jim, Nick & Brian create a very welcoming and hospitable atmosphere, are friendly and helpful in response to requests, are a fund of information on all local pursuits of interest and always good humored.

Breakfasts were excellent and we liked option of the reserve-in-advance 1-hour sittings so we could share information and experiences with fellow guests. We could also sink unhurried into those delicious French toast with fruit masterpieces....

The inn is well-located for access to Newport's many attractions whether on foot or by car.

Highly recommended.

Literally, on the rocks [got engaged in late July on the Newport Cliff Walk!]. We were thrilled to have Brian, Jim and the inn to share our most special day with. Brian was immensely helpful; when we lost our reservation at a nearby inn, Nick and he welcomed us and we were pleasantly surprised with all the appointments. It would surely be our first choice in the future.

The rooms were spacious, the inn was meticulously restored with gorgeous woodwork and kept impeccably clean. Despite only staying a few days, we can't say enough about this location. Centrally located on the island, we had no trouble walking down to most of the mansions, over to the wharves and Thames St. for dining, or just a short walk to several of the eastern beaches.

We hope to come back sometime soon; breakfast on the porch was a great way to run into our innmates and the service and cuisine was terrific. Some innovative breakfast ideas that we've since tried at home!

Thanks Brian, and best of luck with this new project.

  • Liked — Received our own key, private when desired, public when most appreciated [morning/meal].
  • Disliked — Very historic house, smaller bathroom/not heavily AC'd. Comfortable though.

My partner and I spent 3 days in Newport staying at this historic inn for 2 nites. The owners were helpful and friendly and provided good recommendation for places to see and restaurants.to dine in. They were gracious and accomodating. Our room was terrific with a huge bathroom! I would stay there again!

I had never stayed at a B&B before, typically preferring the anonymity of a large hotel because I am a city girl. However, my daughter was looking for gluten-free eating. We stayed three nights at the George Champlin Mason House in August 2008 and it exceeded our expectations!
Our suite (the Perry Suite) was large and lovely with a magnificent bathroom, closet with bathrobes, sitting room, and fireplace. The house is very grand with lots of interesting things to view/read downstairs. The breakfasts were outstanding; kept us going until early dinner. Fresh fruit always came with breakfast and each meal was garnished with fresh flowers. We especially liked having breakfast on the Victorian outside porch.
The hosts, Nick and Brian, were very pleasant and helpful. They did a super job providing special food for us - including delicious gluten-free butterscotch muffins and blueberry French toast.
The Inn is on a quiet cul-de-sac surrounded by hedgerows, yet is is just minutes from First Beach, the Cliffwalk, and the wharves.

  • Liked — The breakfast food and our suite
  • Disliked — That we had to leave after 3 nights

My boyfriend and I were supposed to go to Italy this summer, however circumstances prevented it. So we decided to take a drive to Newport and we arrived at the Inn for a one night stay. We were greeted by Brian, who opened up his home to us from the moment he answered the door.

The inn is breathtaking, we felt as if we went back in time and were living in the 1800's. It was fabulous. The decor of each room is unique to itself.

The breakfast was thought-out and scrumptous. It is obvious Brian cooks with love. At breakfast you have an opportunity to meet other guests as well as get to know Brian, Nick and Jim. They take the time to come out and meet thier guests and spend time with them. We spent almost an hour and a half talking with Nick on the porch. We solved the problems of the world :) Bottom line: Hospitality is second nature to them.

We loved it so much here that we ended up staying two additional nights. It was a great experience and we would go back in a heartbeat. Thanks guys for a great vacation!!

We had a great weekend at this Inn, everything was perfect, especially Brian's breakfast ! The baked peach pancakes and stuffed blueberry french toast were unbelievable ! The restaurant recommendations (all within walking distance) were right on. The sunsets on the bay were spectacular. This Inn is highly recommended. We hope to be able to go back during the Christmas, Thanksgiving or New Years holiday season. We met some new friends as well. Thanks again to Brian, Nick and Jim ! You guys do a great Job !
