“All of the charm of an 18 century home, without sacrificing the modern conveniences”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2012

The Francis Malbone House is conveniently located right in the middle of downtown Newport. We brought our bikes and could literally appreciate everything Newport has to offer without ever needing our car. When we arrived at the house, we were greeted by the Innkeeper, Will, who was gracious and accommodating. In fact, the entire staff was friendly, helpful...and interesting. As a self-caterer, I was thrilled to discover the availability of a microwave and a mini-fridge in which I could store some of my special foods. We also loved the "honor bar" which offered good wine and beer at a very reasonable cost. The breakfast and afternoon tea were fabulous highlights as well. And this review would not be complete without mentioning the wonderful pillow top bed; if I didn't know better, I would have thought I was sleeping on clouds. The window air conditioning was also a nice bonus, especially for those who enjoy the sound of a fan while sleeping. I urge you to stay at the Francis Malbone House the first chance you get; you will not be disappointed. In fact, you may have difficulty leaving since the living rooms and outside courtyard are so inviting and homey. But when you do venture out, make sure to see the Breakers and some of the other "cottages," Cliff Walk, and Salve Regina University and its surrounding buildings. If you are a runner and like hills, take Thames to Memorial all the way to the Wildlife Refuge, on your way back make a left on Bellevue and pass the International Tennis Hall of Fame (9.5 miles total). I also recommend a long bike ride along Ocean Avenue (a drive would also be nice). For a fabulous seafood dinner, check out Scales and Shells. And if you enjoy self-catering like I do, the Stop and Shop is only a few blocks away!

The Francis Malbone House is located on Thames St., the heart of Newport. An impeccably maintained historical residence, The Malbone house offers a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Its friendly staff, beautifully appointed guest rooms and public areas make it a home away from home. The food at breakfast is wonderful and the afternoon tea and homemade goodies delightful!. Have been there many, many times and wouldn't stay anywhere else!!! Highly recommended!

Thank you so much for the review. I can't believe it has been 10 yrs since college graduation! Time flies when you are inn keeping. Great to see the four of you again. Stay in touch and let me know how the Salsa Goat cheese recipe comes out!

I loved everything about the Francis Malbone House. First of all the location is excellent, an easy and pleasant walk to the center of Newport. It is very close to the harbor and many dining choices, pubs, shops and sights. The inn is located on a quiet and very pretty side street with private parking, which is very appreciated. Our room was very comfortable, clean and well appointed. The inn itself is very pretty and comfortable with a lovely dining room in which a hearty and delicious hot breakfast is served and is included in the price of the room. Best of all, the hosts could not be more welcoming, friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay here again.

We took a spontaneous trip to Newport, RI and were thrilled to discover the Francis Malbone House. First, the cleanliness was really the "seal the deal" fine detail that caused us to book a room immediately upon arrival. The cleanliness is supported by a clear attention to maintenance and upkeep, both inside and outside the house. We particularly liked the cooked-to-order breakfast served in a 90 minute window-- we never felt rushed to fit into a schedule that was convenient to the innkeeper rather than to the guests. The house has good off-street parking, and is within walking distance of most attractions so we could just leave our car without worrying having an adult beverage with dinner. We would not hesitate to send people to stay at this property.

A friend suggested we would enjoy the Francis Malbone House when we made a trip to Newport - what a perfect recommendation! From the friendly staff, the lovely courtyard, the beautifully appointed room, the comfortable sitting areas, the great location ... to the food - oh my goodness - the food! Wonderful breakfasts include tasty breads, fresh fruit, yogurt and granola, as well as breakfast entrees each so wonderful it was difficult to decide what to order. And the afternoon tea is "over the top" amazing. No finger sandwiches and cookies tea here - quiches, quesadillas, couscous salad, tarts, cookies, brownies, cupcakes, ... my regards to the chef! My recommendation for you - reserve your getaway at the Francis Malbone House and diet for two weeks before you arrive!
