“Great Location, Even in the Winter”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2012

I stayed with my girlfriend for just a night to visit some friends in Newport. I had lived there for a couple years previously, so I knew my way around and wanted to find somewhere with in close walking distance of restaurants and bars. While there we many options to meet this need, I was glad that we chose the Malbone House. First, the innkeepers were exceptionally responsive to my request to accommodate a gluten-free diet. They had gluten-free peanut butter cookies out when we arrived with the afternoon tea along with plenty of other goodies and fruit. At breakfast the next morning, the chef came out and specifically asked what kind of gluten-free meal we wanted, either pancakes, eggs or a very nice fruit bowl. This service was most appreciated as often traveling and finding gluten-free food is somewhat challenging. Best of all is that i simply needed to write this on the reservation page of the bed and breakfast's website. Typically to ensure our dietary needs are met I have to call ahead, but the Malbone house contacted us first to ensure the pancake mix would be alright.

The grounds of the house are wondful as well. The innkeepers have done a great job of creating a warm and welcoming aura while maintaining the historic look which is characteristic of Newport. This is true even in the new wing of the house. The room was no less enjoyable with a deep, comfortable bed, relaxing and large jacuzzi and best of all a working fireplace, prepared for use. Having the fire going as we fell asleep was most romantic and enjoyable.

I would highly recommend staying here for anyone year round. It is in a great spot for harbor side summer activies, in close walking distance to the harbor, parks, mansions, coffee shops, restaurants and bars. It is no less wonderful in the winter as both my girl and I left wishing we could have spent a few more days there.

My husband and I recently spent a lovely, relaxing weekend at Francis Malbone. Thanks to Tripadvisor, I chose this bed and breakfast and was very happy that I did. We went during the winter season, when Newport is quieter. Nevertheless, there were several other guests staying at the inn. Will, the owner, is extremely friendly and helpful as are the innkeepers, Anna Maria and Luisa. Every morning we were served an amazing breakfast. The first day I had poached eggs with asparagus and my husband had the delicious french toast. The second day we both had breakfast burritos, which were so tasty. As an aside, my husband and I are both vegetarians and the inn had no problem accommodating our diet.

Afternoon tea was equally scrumptious, with vegetables quiches, brownies, cookies, macaroons, and hot tea and coffee. We also enjoyed getting to know other couples staying at the inn and had lengthy conversations with others during tea as well as breakfast.

The inn is located centrally, so it is easy to walk to local restaurants on Thames. Our room was very comfortable. The inn also has DVDs to borrow, if you're interested in seeing a movie later in the evening. Overall, an excellent stay.

The Francis Malbone House is a wonderful place to visit. My husband and I have been going there for years. The inn is kept perfectly and the staff is always warm and welcoming. The rooms are beautiful and each is different. We always look forward to returning. It's location in town is perfect, park your car when you get there and walk to all!!

We wanted some quiet time to relax away from our daily routine. The ambiance of the Francis Malbone House is exactly what we hoped for. Having discovered it in Yankee Magazine, we were so pleased with our choice! The historic house makes you feel at home with all the comforts you would expect in your own house. The rooms are elegant and beautifully decorated, yet cozy and welcoming. The fireplace in our room made our February stay even cozier. We also sat by a fireplace downstairs to read the paper, have a cup of afternoon tea and nibble from the amazing daily spread! The location is perfect, walking to dinner and sights, and then a short drive to see the Mansions and beaches. Off season is very relaxing; highly recommended, but we would love to come in summer too. We hope to come back again soon. We left reluctantly and feeling revived! Thank you, Will, for your good cheer and recommendations. OH yes, breakfast in front of the fire is a delicious and soothing way to start your day! ( There is air conditioning in the summer! ) I guess we enjoy our fires! The Francis Malbone house is top notch! Treat yourself.

Don't visit Newport without staying at the Malbone House with the spacious and comfortable rooms. The staff makes you feel like family as they have believe themselves to be family. This was our second stay at Malbone and due to a business conference in progress with early morning start times, we were offered a more quiet area instead of our reserved room. The new room was a delightful large suite adjacent to a quiet sitting room with a wood burning fireplace. A thoughtful and appreciated accommodation made by the staff. The breakfast choices are varied, all delicious and presented and served with care by warm wood burning fireplace. The afternoon tea when sampled seriously is likely to interfer with dinner enjoyment as it hard to pass up!
Malbone is walking distance to the harbor, wharfs, shops and dinning which adds to the experience of Newport.

The Francis Malbone House continues to be our "getaway" retreat. The rooms are clean and well appointed, the breakfast and afternoon tea are great and the staff and management leave nothing to be desired. We'll be back there before 6/1!
