“Francis Malbone House - Amazing B&B in Newport”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2011

My wife and haven’t stayed in a B&B in over 10 years simply because our last experience was in a word – “awkward”. However Francis Malbone House has been repeatedly recommended to us from many people and recently we stayed at Francis Malbone House for a nice weekend getaway in November and our experience was fabulous. The house itself set itself apart as its interesting history and timeless architecture speak for them themselves. The rooms are beautifully adorned with high quality linens and very comfortable beds, with high ceilings and fireplaces. The spacious layout allows for great relaxation and conversation with friends as there are several sitting rooms with couches and chairs, and again beautiful wood burning fireplaces.
The two dining rooms are amble space for a great home cooked breakfast prepared for you on your time schedule, so that you can look forward to the same delectable treats at 3pm daily during the afternoon tea where traditional scones and sweets are served alongside wonderfully prepared quiches and other hot appetizers.
Besides the great location, great food, and great architecture; what makes your stay so cozy and comfortable is the staff at the Inn. Anne Maria the innkeeper, supported by Suzanne and the rest of the staff, truly raise the bar when it comes to hospitality. As you can see from the rest of the many favorable reviews, the Francis Malbone house is one of the best B&B’s in New Port. If you’re thinking about a getaway to Newport, do yourself a favor and stay there. You won’t be disappointed, if anything, you’ll expect more from any other place that you’ll stay after having stayed at Francis Malbone House.

I planned a 60th birthday overnight escape at the Francis Malbone House for my wife. Our stay was perfect! We stayed in the Benjamin Mason House with our friends and enjoyed the entire, private house to ourselves. The suite accommodations were simply luxurious and beautifully appointed...king-size bed, double jacuzzi with separate marble shower, and sitting room. Anne Marie was more than gracious and set a welcoming tone from our arrival to our departure. The staff was extremely friendly and aimed to please any request. The inn is set right on the harbor amidst quaint shops and excellent restaurants. High tea was phenomenal and a full breakfast the next morning complimented our stay. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and are looking forward to our next visit.

We stayed two nights at the Francis Malone and only wished it could have been for longer. From the minute we checked in to the time we left we were provided with friendly and welcoming service by all staff. The room overlooked the courtyard and was very confortable, although slightly nosiy from the sounds from adjoining and upstairs rooms.
The afternoon tea and breakfast were absolutely delicious and very well presented, with a choice of where to sit - in a number of lounges to outside in a pleasant courtyard.
Only wish that this was nearer to our home as we would visit it frequently in the future.

We stayed seven nights at The Francis Malbone House (initially planned four - but delighted to be able to stay longer). We were there for our son's wedding, the entire house having been booked for the happy occasion. Will and Anne Maria set the tone of welcoming hospitality from the outset. And thereafter, the entire staff were similarly enthused to ensure a perfect stay for all. The warm comfort and furnishings of the interconnected ground-floor reception rooms was most congenial to both privacy (when needed) and interactions with other guests. Our arrival on the first afternoon was highlighted by the lavish 'afternoon tea' - somewhat 'sinful' in its indulgence! - all dishes home-baked by Nick or Anne Maria. On several subsequent afternoons, we ensured that we were present to savour the range of delicacies, changing daily (and conveniently available from 3 until 6 pm). The breakfasts were also a delight; the friendly atmosphere started daily at that point, with Will, Anne Maria and colleagues chatting with their guests: the personal informality of a private Irish country house in New England! We had a 'garden room' which was very quiet and relaxing. The conveniently located carpark is a definite plus! We hope to return to see more of Newport, and shall stay at The Francis Malbone House - the best we have yet experienced in New England.

Room Tip: Courtyard-facing and garden rooms are quiet; friends found rooms overlooking traffic-busy Thames Str...

We made a last minute decision to base ourselves in gorgeous Newport, RI, for five days, and were unbelievably lucky to get a reservation at this wonderful, luxurious property. We had three rooms on the third floor in the original building, and they were spacious and beautifully appointed, two of them had fireplaces, and all were cosy and full of character. The whole inn is beautiful; the staff friendly and incredibly helpful; the location central (but quiet and relaxing); and the breakfasts and afternoon teas fabulous. Suzanne's recommendations for dining (and shopping!) were great. Host, Will, was really helpful and accommodating, and all three of us would return to Francis Malbone in a heartbeat. Go to Newport, and stay at Francis Malbone, it's just lovely.

Stayed overnight at the Francis Malbone, in the the stillhouse room, which was in a separate building to the actual hotel. Beautifully decorated, immaculately clean, and a lovely comfy bed made this a lovely place to stay. Did feel a little more like a hotel than a B&B due to size, and also the number of staff around, so experience was less personal than we had at other B&B's in New England. Breakfast was a bit chaotic: the weather had just changed, so people were queuing for indoor tables while people were eating: perhaps a few smaller tables rather than the 4 large ones in the breakfast room would have eased the congestion. Very yummy afternoon tea, brilliant location for exploring newport, free parking always nice.
