“Good B&B off the path”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2011

This bed and breakfast allows dogs, which is a great plus for us dog owners. The owner/operator was very accommodating and sent several emails prior to our arrival with instructions and recommendations. It is walking distance (1/2 mile) to the southern starting point of the Cliff walk. It's a similar distance to several of the mansions as well. It's only a mile from downtown Newport. The only negative is that we found ourselves constantly driving to the downtown area and trying to find parking, which is expensive and hard to find. Staying right in downtown would have been more convenient.

I have been to Newport many times and stayed at various places over the years. This year, we brought along Jazmine, our Pomeranian. I searched on PetFriendly.com for dog friendly establishments and came across the Murray House. We absolutely loved it and will certainly be back for another visit.

I first contacted Noreen about availability and to verify we could bring along Jazmine. She very quickly responded to all my emails and also sent information on dog friendly places, dog parks and other "dog tips/rules/regs". She also included the area's restaurants, thing to do, places to see, etc. You won't get these personal touches from the major "chain" hotels. At the Murray house, Noreen is easily accessible and she is your own private concierge! She is a great hostess!

After a last minute change in plans (which Noreen was very accommodating to), we arrived and checked into the Garden Room. This room has a safari/animal print theme that was really neat. We had a kitchenette with a stove, fridge and microwave which was great for us. This room was especially nice since it has a small backyard that is enclosed which was great for Jazmine. The location is very convenient and we loved the privacy. The grounds- which include a pool and koi fish pound were beautifully landscaped and very well kept.

We really appreciated everything Noreen did for us and for Jazmine- including a goody bag with treats which she quickly dug into! If you travel with your dog- definitely stay here. If you are not "dog people", stay here anyway. It is very clean and quaint- dog or not. Noreen makes you feel so comfortable and right at home. After whirl wind weekend, I left behind my favorite hair straightener (ladies- you can relate). I emailed Noreen and she was on it right away. She very kindly sent it out to me. These personal touches really make a difference and that is why we are planning on returning again. We were actually in town for the Newport Half Marathon so it was jam packed but we are returning next time for some R&R at the Murray House.... and Jazmine is looking forward to it : )

If you're looking for privacy and quiet in a place, then definitely consider the Murray House B&B for your Newport visit. It is conveniently located near the Cliff Walk, Ocean Drive, Salve Regina University, and the mansions on Bellevue St. My husband and I (with our Brussels Griffon) stayed in the Garden Room, which we chose mainly because of the patio area it provided for our dog. Although the bedroom itself is small, the patio made up for living space and it has a good-sized bathroom. We especially liked having a little kitchenette to prepare our own snacks or meals, coffee in the morning, a small fridge to store our food, water and bottles of wine. The Garden Room is decorated with (I thought) a mixed safari/island theme, perhaps a little too much, but we considered this a trivial detail compared to all the positives and the value we got overall. It was nice to have both a fan and a/c, especially since it turned out to be a warm weekend (in late Sept), but when in use it can get loud in the small room. There is a pool which we didn't get to use, but looked inviting, although at times we did notice a faint skunk odor around the area.

Noreen was a gracious host and a quick phone call away, she provided us with a lot of local information even before we arrived...such as dog-friendly places in town which we found quite helpful. It was also so thoughtful of Noreen to leave a little goody bag in our room for our pooch, and he knew immediately that it was for him! Another pleasant and welcome surprise was having our rooms cleaned and tidied up each day..even the dishes we left in the sink were washed! It made such a difference to come back at the end of each day to a room that was clean and tidy! We noticed the little attention to details that Noreen did, such as leaving a lamp on in the room for us when we returned in the evening.

One nice find in town was Blue Rocks Market on 7 Carroll Ave. It's a gourmet deli that we went to every day to either pick up breakfast or a variety of delicious dishes (including cheeses, charcuterie and hors d'oeuvres) that we brought back to the Murray House for light snacks or dinner! Check them out!

Thank you Noreen for a lovely weekend! We hope to come and stay at the Murray House again for future Newport visits.

There are lots of B&B's in Newport, but Murray House is well located in a residential area near a beach and Ocean Avenue. We arrived the day after hurricane Irene, so there was a very nice suite waiting, but no electricity! We checked in and found dinner in a restaurant with an electric generator. Upon returning we found lit candles and a flashlight waiting for us. The power came back on the next day.

We stayed in the Garden Room, which was a suite of bedroom, small kitchen and a great bathroom. It is VERY decorated with animal and other jungle motif furnishings. And there was plenty of room for us and our suitcases etc. We had our own private outdoor garden space where we ate every morning.

The only negatives we found were: the kitchen needs its own fan as it does not have a window, the pool was too cold to use and the hot tub was not operating, for some people there might not be enough local information available on site and the bed was too soft.

We love Newport and will be back.

Room Tip: The Garden Room has the most privacy. The upper rooms have the views.

This was the worst place I ever stayed. The room we had was small and dirty and the innkeeper was just rude!

We had such a wonderful trip in Newport thanks to Murray House and host Noreen! Before we even got there she emailed us a detailed list of restaurants, links of things to do, and very clear directions to the B&B. We arrived late at night and Noreen was very accomodating and let us park in the driveway until the next day. We stayed in the garden room which was so cute! Our room had a private patio and beautiful garden which we loved, and is one of the reasons this B&B is so unique. We ate breakfast outside on the patio every morning (which was delicious by the way!) but there was a table set inside for us also. Our room had everything: a little kitchen with a mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker and sink, dishes, utensils, ironing board, iron, hair dryer, curling iron, toothpaste...i felt like i only needed to pack clothes! This was more than we could have asked for and makes Murray House stand out among the others. Also there is a very nice POOL a big plus to me and another unique feature! The location was perfect for us...the mansions are 1 block over and the entrance to Cliffwalk is right down the road, both of which we walked to. Ocean drive is also down the road and is a beautiful spot to run! All in all we had a wonderful trip in Newport thanks to our great accomodations and host :) This will be an annual trip!

Room Tip: We have only experienced the garden roomso far and it is very private with its own patio and separat...

Murray House is one quite exceptional place! A lovely Bed and Breakfast along a quiet street in a peaceful neighborhood right in Newport!! A very close walking distance to the mansions, the Cliffwalk and the private beach. Innkeeper Noreen has such an amazing eye for detail. The garden room we stayed in was a whimsical combination of safari decor. It was quite comfortable and relaxing with every amenity one could think of! The pool area and flower gardens were quite beautiful and attended to with loving care. The birdhouses and koi pond were very interesting to observe,as well as the HUGE kitty cat Jamie!!. To have breakfast delivered to your room can't be beat! It was a great way to be able to immediately start one's day! The breakfasts.....out of this world! I wish Noreen could do that for me every morning!
Such thoughtful things Noreen does-she really loves this place and what she's doing here-and it shows! She went above and beyond for us! Thank You! We love this place and we shall DEFINATLY return!

Room Tip: We loved the garden room, quite romantic and peaceful, altho that pool room with direct access to swim...
