Owner description: The Newport Art Museum's collections and exhibitions reflect Rhode Island's rich cultural heritage and lively contemporary art scene. We are the only museum to focus on the art and artists of Rhode Island, both historic and contemporary. The Museum is housed in the John N.A. Griswold House and the Cushing Gallery. Home for the Museum since 1916, the Griswold House is a National Historic Landmark and an Official Project of Save America’s Treasures. Designed in 1862 by architect Richard Morris Hunt, it was completed in 1864 for John N.A. Griswold, a China trade merchant and financier, and his wife Jane. Griswold House was Hunt’s first major commission in Newport and is the premier example of American Stick Style architecture. Hunt went on to design many of the grand cottages of Newport’s Gilded Age, including The Breakers, Marble House, and Ochre Court. To honor artist Howard Gardiner Cushing, an early member of the Newport Art Association, the Association erected the Cushing Gallery in 1920.The Newport Art Museum is one of only 5% of American museums to be fully accredited by the American Association of Museums.

“Great mix of art and even some architecture”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2013

The first thing I noticed was the building itself... beautiful old architecture, which is in itself an art form, including the patterned wood floors, ornate fireplaces, and beautiful windows and doorways. The art inside was the perfect mix and volume - some modern, some classic, different media, etc. I have been in many art museums that left me exhausted trying to see all of it, but this was the perfect balance for me. We had a bonus as well: Several local artists had their work on display as part of a juried show on digital art, and they shared their thoughts, inspirations, and processes with us. Many of the pieces were just outstanding, and it was a joy to hear from the artists themselves, and to be able to ask them questions about their work. I left thoroughly satiated, but not worn out.

The beautiful period rooms and the display of art in each area made it feel as though you were a guest in a lovely home then in a museum

“Beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2012

This is a beautiful and smaller museum. You could spend and entire day visiting the wonderful paintings. The grounds are also lovely and it is conveniently located. It is a short walk to the Tennis Hall of Fame and restaurants.

“Small”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2012

Went here one day when the weather was kind of crumby and did not know what else to do in town. If you like portraits, youll enjoy. There is some modern art displayed as well. Overall, average and small, yet filled the void we had in our day.
