“Great Prime Rib!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2014

Decided on this restaurant after walking up & down Thames Street a couple times. Sat upstairs. NE clam chowder was very good. I had Cajun swordfish, which was good. Tasty but not inspiring. Spouse had Prime Rib, which was as good as any we've had at high-end restaurants in NYC, Boston & Worcester. Tender, seasoned & perfectly cooked. Service was average. Prices great since we dined between 4PM & 7PM. We'll return when we visit Newport again.

“Excellent Casual Dining”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2014

Had lunch here recently based on a recommendation from a local and we enjoyed a great seafood lunch at reasonable prices in an area that cab quite expensive.
The reco was based on it being Tuesday when seafood is priced reduced. ie; Oysters and large shrimp @ 1.00 each and clams at .50 each.
There was also a 1 1/4 lb lobster with a cup of clam chowder for 16.95, steamed clam bucket for 13.95 and those items were all excellent. Draft beer was 4.00 and the place was very busy.
Unfiortunately I ordered a pastrami sandwich that was horribly prepared. I though all cooks knew that smoked meat sandwichs should be moist, thinly sliced and piled high... mine was grilled to a dry shoe leather texture. My fault for ordering something other than seafood !

It is located just a short walk up from the harbour on ashopping / resaturant bar area.

We definetly recommend it especially on Tuesdays and for the seafood !

“Warm but worth it”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2014

FOOD:
Raw bar- great
Fish and chips great
Prime rib great
Ny strip great

Drinks are made to order and the bar has a great hometown feel.

STAFF:
The downstairs staff is definitely more friendly than then older hostess upstairs who seems more concerned with talking to random people than helping.
Waitstaff and bartenders are great!

“Surprisingly unpleasant”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2014

Given the location, busy brunch crowd, and environment I thought this was to going to be a straightforward 'good' choice. The oysters were chipped, the entrees were plain and boring, and the service was poor. I recommend skipping Benjamin's for another seafood spot downtown.

“Pleasantly surprised. ”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2014

I am a native Newporter and have never been to Benjamin's. Don't know why. Just never thought of it. Well, I'm sad to say it took me this long! Everything we ordered was wonderful. Oysters, little necks, crab cakes, frogs legs, salmon, swordfish. No one in our group was disappointed. So, don't wait as long as I did and GO b
