“I liked the chowder”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2012

In a nice neighborhood of Newport, the Griswolds Tavern is down the street from many stores and the tennis museum. Pretty quick service, nice waitress, good atmosphere. There is a bar in the middle if you want to stop for just a drink, and tables if you want a meal. The chowder and crabcakes were good, as well as the cheeseburgers.

“Just ok”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2012

This tavern is just down the street from the Viking Hotel. We sat at a table in the front window at 5pm when they opened for dinner. There were some pieces of food on the floor that looked like french fries, and sugar ants promptly started swarming on the food and my shoe so we switched tables. The arm of the second chair was sticky. When we pointed that we had moved tables due to the ants, the waiter just laughed and shrugged it off. Not a great first impression. Is it so hard to clean up after the lunch crowd? We liked that this tavern was off on the hill in a quiet area, not in the center of the touristy Thames st area. The chicken caesar salad was very good - a generous serving of fresh chopped lettuce, with a delicate dressing, and well-seasoned grilled chicken. The pasta primavera was awful - the veggies were overcooked and the entree was swimming in a bowl full of wine sauce that tasted like grape juice. Not sure if we'll return, but if we do, it will be for lunch sandwiches not dinner entrees.

“Great Variety and Prices in Newport”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2012

After visiting the Breakers, we wanted a restauarant that was close to the mansions so that we could go back and do the Cliff Walk after dinner. Since we had a large group (13), including teenagers, we needed lots of variety and good prices. This restaurant was PERFECT. There were burgers, salads, Mexican fare, appetizers, and some of the regular entrees you might expect (steak, fish, etc.). The staff was very accommodating of our large group. We did not need reservations and sat right down. The food was excellent and the total bill did not break our budget. We spent $13/pp with tip. The portions were huge. The best part was that this restaurant was on Bellevue, but far enough from the harbor area that gets very crowded and very expensive. I would definitely go here again.

“Horrible service, ok food”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2012

The service greeted our party of 7 adults and 2 children with eye rolls and huffing and puffing. When we asked to split checks we were greeted with more eye rolls, and the server said , "well you are still getting 20% gratuity". The food came out after 45 minutes of waiting, and at different times. The server checked on us once after brining out the final entree. It also took a long time to check out. The servers were constantly eye rolling and staring us down, which was very odd. I felt uncomfortable the whole time. We left 5 bucks on a 52 $ tab, and we thought that was generous. The server then said to us, after looking At the tip, "tou know I didn't add ogratuity..." I said I know, I added it up, I thought 5 was a gracious tip. And she I'd, whatever you are so wrong. So much for the customer is alway right. Been in Newport for 3 weeks and this wasBY FAR the Worst service anywhere.
