“stayed in better motels”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2013

the units are about 30 yrs old ours was an updated unit nice flat screens and the beds were very very comfortable staf was friendly and listened to my concerns

when we arrived we unpacked first thing i noticed the toliet seat was very loose almost falling off.
both sliding doors to the patio were covered with finger prints in and outside

all the mirrors were dirty and the window sills and blinds were covered with think dust at least six months worth

the tile floor in bathrooms were cracked as well as the tile on front of the fireplace

the units have no ac returns so the back of the unit barley gets cold

I adressed this with the maintaince director on saturday and he took care of many things that he could gave me a 50.00 gift certificate to many resteraunts from the chamber of commerce
We would never stay here again also this was on a rci timeshare exchange

other guests we meet in the pool said they were not impressed

the only views from balcony were the parking lot and the indoor pool

Room Tip: make sure you have an updated unit

This hotel is great for families. We booked a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom place. We ended up in 141, which is the building furthest out from the road, right on the water.
Room: The room was a bit rundown, but the size and layout made it perfect. The bedrooms are at opposite ends of the large/long living room. The living room had a sofa (very uncomfortable), coffee table, and television (and working fireplace!), and the kitchen was pretty well equipped and there was a large dining table. There is also a wonderful balcony for having lunch and/or dinner. (Rundown defined: when we arrived, the kitchen light wasn't working and the master bedroom sink wasn't draining, but a quick phonecall fixed these issues. In addition, there were obvious marks of where things used to be - as in fixtures had been moved and there were holes that had been filled over [or not] and painted over [or not])
Parking: Included! (An amazing deal, we learned)
Location: The location also cannot be beat. It is on Central Thames Street. We walked to our sailing camp (JWorld, highly recommended) at Commercial Wharf every morning, and then to find dinner either at the grocery (Stop and Shop on Bellvue) or the Lobster Shack (down near the Marriot) every evening.
Service: We stayed 5 nights. We interacted with the staff very infrequently. The welcome was ok, warm but not over the top and not very welcoming. Each time we called the front desk (about the kitchen light, the bathroom sink, etc), we got a woman named Judy (I think) who was VERY friendly, personable, and remembered us from one day to the next. The response time was very good, and we were satisfied.
To Do: I added this section so I can share my favorites with you -- walk or run the Cliffwalk (evening is best for photos because of the orientation of the sun), Anthony's Seafood in Middletown for a casual lunch/dinner out, Lobster Shack for cook your own, Farmers Market on Wednesdays.

We are Wyndham owners and we wanted to find a place for our family to get together over spring break. We rented 2 2-bedroom suites and everyone was pleased. I have been telling my sisters for years about the benefits of becoming owners, but now they were able to see for themselves and they LOVED it. I have stayed at some better resorts, but this one was very nice. I would like to see them add more activities and let people know to turn the suana on for at least 30 minutes prior to getting in. Otherwise it was a nice stay and it impressed my family so they may become owners one day:)

Room Tip: Be sure to get the updated rooms with the flat screen tvs:)

Wow wow wow...im totally wowed upon my arrival at the Wyndham Newport onshore. Ive been here before and it was nice but now its totally updated with new furnishings and flat screen TVs, new carpet and paint and ta da...New luxury mattresses and bedding!! We are currently in a 2 bedroom 2 bath unit thru an RCI exchange last minute. Fireplace, 2 pools, incredible VIEWS from every room. 2 balconies. Cusinart appliances in the full kitchen and speaking of kitchens we are talking stocked with every sort of cups, high end pots and pans, wine glasses..no expense spared in this place. Im lovin it, here now, cant say enough good things about it whether or not you can get a timeshare exchange here or pay thru the nose its worth it.
Did I mention the view? Its right on Newport harbor with views of the pell bridge and boats. Fresh clean air streaming thru every window here...ahhhhhh.
Wish I could move in..I would! Its that nice. Spotlessly clean too. Walk to everything. Yet very peaceful here..great quality of rest.

This facility is part of the Wyndham timeshare system but you will find it almost impossible to get a booking there if you are either a Wyndham owner or want to trade via RCI. I was surprised to see that 1- and 2-BR units were nevertheless bookable via search engines such as hotels.com. What this seems to indicate is that as a Wyndham or RCI member you have very limited availability because management decides to make money by renting out apartments to the general public!

The 2-BR unit we were assigned had a potentially lovely view of the harbor that was largely obstructed by the roof of the indoor pool. The unit itself had been recently updated but was VERY dark. The living room/dining room area was very narrow and very long, with only a sliding door with heavy curtains at each end of the room. The master bedroom (off the living room) also faced the pool roof and was relatively quiet, as there were only about 10 parking spaces immediately underneath the window. The second bedroom with two single beds faced not only a very busy parking lot belonging to the complex but also a large public parking lot just beyond. When we asked to be moved to another unit we were told that this was not possible because "owners" were given priority. Pointing out that we were indeed Wyndham owners didn't get us anywhere.

Overall this was not a good experience. I found the staff superficially friendly but not at all helpful. Their "take-it-or-leave-it" attitude is probably fueled by the knowledge that this facility is in a prime location and thus very desirable.

While in Newport you should obviously visit some mansions and the front desk does have coupons that reduce the price of admission by $5. At least something...

Room Tip: Try not to get a place facing busy Thames Street -- there is way too much traffic noise.

Wyndham Newport has a great location. You can park your car and walk to almost anywhere you want to go. Newport is not driving friendly with heavy traffic, people standing in the street and tons of one way narrow streets. We stayed in an older building that was neat and clean. We had a good view of the marina and water. The unit had a balcony on both the east and west side. The staff was friendly and inviting. It's a nice place for a vacation. a nice vacation.

We just got back from a week in Newport staying at Newport Onshore. Timeshare exchange for us and stayed in the Northwind bldg. in a 2 bedroom unit. Unit is large and very clean. However, the furniture needs updating badly. Almost impossible to get comfortable in the living room. One couch and two straight back chairs----really?----for a guest to spend 7 nights. TV's are old and didn't get many channels. Bed comfy.

There is construction currently on both sides of the resort. We had the view of the crane. Asked to be switched but could not. The dock crew was friendly anyways. This is not the fault of Onshore---just the way it is there right now.

Staff was courteous. This place has a fabulous location on Thames St. and could be so much more with the updates. Come on Wyndham, this place is tired.
