“WONDERFUL!!!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2012

We just stayed at the Hydrangea House last weekend for our 20th anniversary! It was beautiful, romantic and clean! We stayed in the Oak room, which was beautiful! Loved the steam shower, big tub and gas fireplace! I don't remember telling them it was our anniverary, and when we arrived in our room after dinner, there was a small cake with a Happy 20th Anniversary message!!! It was so sweet! Loved the breakfast, enjoyed the company with the guests and the wine/cheese in the afternoon was great. Dennis, Grant and Rosie, thank you so much!!!! Hope to be back soon! Darlene and Mike

Dennis, Grant, and Alice were all wonderful hosts. Grant made the most delicious breakfast which was really worth getting up early for. We stayed in the Veranda Room, which had its own entrance. The room was extremely clean and cute. Beautiful setting and a beautiful area. We could not have asked for a better stay. We really enjoyed it!

Just had the pleasure of spending a last minute getaway at the H-House. Nice room, nice breakfast, nice people. The rooms are very nice and most importantly, very clean, including the bathroom. Breakfast was delicious and convenient. Plenty of off street parking. Would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Back rooms have their own entrance and private sitting porch.......definitely a plus.

We just spent two wonderful nights at the Hydrangea House and stayed in the Chesterfield Suit which was lovely. Dennis and Grant were great host's and very helpful with any questions we had.
We enjoyed a delicious breakfast and there was wine and cheese in the afternoon which was a nice touch. The Inn was very clean and had a great ambiance. It also was in a great location close to shops and restaurants. We can't wait to go back to Newport and the Hydrangea House.

The Hydrangea House lives up to it's historic setting in the furnishings and ambience, evoking the gracious living from years past. Wine, cheese and crackers in the main house was a nice late afternoon snack and a way to relax after a busy day of sightseeing. Our room was beautifully furnished and had all the modern amenities that travelers today expect. Turning down the bed, turning on the bedside lamps and leaving two delicious cookies on a beautiful little plate were nice touches at the end of the day. The only negative about the room was the noisy window AC unit which ran constantly. The breakfasts were sumptious and filling and served buffet style. Coffee refills were offered often. This B&B is part of the Select Registry which inspects its member properties on a regular basis to ensure excellent quality in all aspects of the accommodations. Only three B&Bs in Newport have achieved inclusion in the Select Registry, which is quite an accomplishment. We always stay at a Select Registy Inn, if there is one in the area of our travels, and The Hydrangea House did not disappoint.

The owners at the Hydrangea House are good people who are very pleasant to the patrons. And the rooms are comfortable and clean. However, the owners fall short when it comes to breakfast for a FOUR reasons. ONE: The breakfast starts at 9 AM and not a minute sooner. If you want to eat breakfast, you won't get out until 10 AM, which is a very late start for many people. When asked why they start breakfast so late, the response was, “We like our guest to be able to sleep in.” Translation--“We don’t want to begin working at 6 AM to serve you at 7 AM. And if we wait until 9, we can serve you all at once which is easier for us.” Since it’s such a late start, everyone in the hotel is present and patiently waiting to have some coffee and eat. So, when you eat breakfast, be prepared to eat it at the dining room table with a dozen other people engaging in endless small talk…but you may like that. A 7 or 7:30 AM breakfast start makes more sense. TWO: Everything is served to you by one of the staff, which means that you have to wait to be poured coffee into your tiny cup. For the $275-$475/night cost, two coffee pots should be put on the table for the guests to drink at their leisure. Also, there are only enough "second servings" for about half the table (or perhaps no seconds at all), which can get awkward. Again, the nice staff serves the breakfast to you, but this discourages seconds for shy guests. It should be a buffet, or they should be going around encouraging guests to eat more so they won’t be shy. Or, they should let guests come down when they want between 7-9 AM and serve them accordingly. Yes, this might require hiring an additional cook. THREE: Most people will enjoy the fattening food choices of French toast, pastries, egg sandwiches with hollandaise sauce, etc. because America = Fat Foods. However, if you don’t want the fatty breakfast, the alternative is cold cereal, limited fruit choices, hard-boiled eggs or sweetened yogurt. The owners do take pride in their breakfast, and they should. It’s good. But if you’re looking to have a couple of eggs over-easy with toast, it’s not going to happen. To their credit, the owners do ask you if you want a different breakfast from the rest of the guests “for dietary reasons,” but most may feel shy about making a special request if it’s not because of a food allergy. Finally, FOUR: Their dog wanders around the dining table. Funny, they asked guests if they have any dietary restrictions but did not ask if they were allergic to dogs. The dog is small, sweet, and cute…so it shouldn’t be a problem for most. However, the typical dog owner attitude of “everyone should love dogs and if you don’t you better love mine” is a bit presumptuous. My suggestion is that if you want a classic “bed” experience in an old, well-taken-care-of home, go to the Hydrangea House…but you may very well want to skip the “and breakfast” part if you were nodding your head throughout this review.

Room Tip: If you don't need a lot of room because you'll be out being a tourist all day, choose the sm...

Grant E, Owner at Hydrangea House Inn, responded to this review, August 31, 2012
The biggest frustration in any business is when a customer, or in this case a guest, does not have the ability to tell a business owner about their likes or dislikes about the service when the service is rendered.

With regard to the points in this review, our very long 25 year innkeeping experience has taught us that guests on vacation often like to sleep late if at all possible. There are those guests who, for various reasons, will request to dine earlier than the regular breakfast time and, in every case, we will accommodate that request. Today, health restrictions are common and again we accommodate a guest’s restricted diet and will, in every case, accommodate guest’s requests for a special prepared breakfast item. We do this all the time. Rosie, our “small, sweet and cute” Bichon Frise is non-allergenic too guests because she has hair, not fur, as do all our guests. We do not permit guest’s pets at the inn.

In conclusion, as innkeepers, we can deal with anything. A shy guest who does not communicate with us is something we have no control over. We encourage our guest to communicate with us so their Newport holiday will be a success.

Had a wonderful stay at the Hydrangea House Inn. Booked three nights in the Carrie in Paris suite which was spacious, very clean, and comfortable. The owners Dennis and Grant will answer any questions and are accomodating in every way. Thank you Grant for the fantastic breakfasts which we looked forward to each morning! The presentation and place settings each day were lovely. The cookies left at turn-down were delicious. We met several very enjoyable couples during the wine and cheese afternoons. The location is very good and you can easily catch the trolley to the mansions. Thanks for a great get-away. We will be back!
