Newport is a great town, my boyfriend and I visited there for my first time last July. I booked our reservation online at the Pineapple Inn because it was the best rate we could find. Well there is a reason why it's so cheap, it's the most disgusting hotel I've ever stayed at in my life. Luckily we were only there for one night, if it had been longer I would have forfeited my money and gone elsewhere. The bed had hairs (not ours) on the sheets when we arrived, the room smelt like smoke, BO and curry. The bathroom was so gross you didn't even want to take a shower in it, so much mold....I'm really not a very picky person at all and I would tell anyone NEVER COME HERE.

"On a Saturday night anything will be expensive in Newport. But 79 bucks plus tax for a place like this is a rip off. The room I got was filthy and it smelled awful. Opening the radiator it blew in more bad air. The bathroom is in terrible condition and needs a renovation as much as this motel. Spend a little more money."

“It is what it is.”

Pineapple Inn

I came to this site before booking a stay at the Pineapple Inn to get a sense of what to expect. Now that I've stayed there myself, it amazes me how greatly the opinions differ.

The phrase "you get what you pay for" should be at the forefront of your mindset when booking and visiting this establishment. I booked a three-night stay at the Pineapple Inn during one of their busiest weekends of the year for a total of $350. Knowing that this price is usually the single night price at the B&Bs downtown (that is IF you can get a reservation), I did not expect much.

But I also didn't NEED much either. This wasn't a trip to a 4 seasons resort. I just needed a place to crash after a long day at the jazz fest. And that's exactly what the Pineapple Inn is...a place to sleep. The amenities include TV with HBO, a small fridge, and a microwave. The beds were comfortable enough to get me through the night. The bathroom was clean enough to afford me a quick shower. Also because of the late booking, I had to deal with a smoking room. The smoking rooms don't necessarily smell of smoke but I do believe that if the owners are trying to renovate the rooms, they're leaving the smoking rooms for last.

Bottom line...it's a motor inn. If you plan to be "out of the house" for the majority of your stay at Newport and just need a place to sleep, you could do worse. If you're a germ-a-phobe you might want to opt for the non-smoking room it they're available. You could also feel more at ease by bringing your own sheets and pillows and wear flip-flops in the shower. If your expectations are high, you'll hate it.

Would I book there again? Yes, and no. There are other budget hotels in Newport that are better than this one and I would book there first. But I wouldn't turn down the Pineapple Inn next year if they're the only option.

I hope this helps.

“Beware!! Very Dirty Hotel.”

Pineapple Inn

BEWARE!!!! Do not stay at this hotel. I cannot believe that reputable online hotel sources even offer this place as a option for anyone to book and stay here. For starters when we showed up to get our room key the man that was working the desk was sleeping and told us we just woke him up. Then we get to the room and it smelled awful. There was dirt all over the floor and the bathroom had definitely not been cleaned. The towels were dirty.
I then pulled the sheets back to find blood on the pillows and on the sheets, hairs from all parts of the body all over the sheets and the mattress's were old and dirty. I took pictures of this with my digital camera and went straight to the front desk with them. I explained to him that I was in shock at the state of this room and that I would not stay there. That anything charged to my card needed to be credited because we were not staying there. He assured me he hadn't even charged the card yet, and would not charge the card. I explained to him that I would be calling the board of health on them. I wouldn't even have sat on the bed for fear that I might have caught something deadly in that room. I cannot believe that these places are allowed to keep there doors open and that people would actually stay there. Anyone who wrote a review on this hotel and said anything nice about it I am very leary of. I left there that night, I did not even last 20 minutes there. I was so disturbed by it that my stomach was in knots for hours after leaving. I asked some locals about the Pineapple Inn and people that worked at the hotel down the street that I got a room at ( best western). I was informed that they rent out rooms hourly there, thats what kind of place this is. I was given a discount at the place I ended up staying at because they felt bad for us. DO not bring children to this place ever.

I have enjoyed the diversity of the reviews on this place. The "terrible" reviews almost scared me away, but we went and, hey, it's not bad for the price. With rooms running $400 on weekend nights in the name hotels in Newport, finding the Pineapple Inn for $129 was encouraging. The air conditioning and hot water worked well, the place was quiet and the beds quite comfortable. Some welcome extras were the refrigerator and microwave. I wouldn't recommend it for a honeymoon or a once a year vacation, but for a short visit to expensive Newport, it was fine for us. One section, in the left rear of the property is newer and a good bet. If you only stay at Ritz Carltons and Four Seasons you'll hate the place, but if you consider the location and the alternatives, the Pineapple Inn will work for you.
