“Felt at home right away”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2013

Went for a winter weekend getaway and just loved the place. I loved how quiet it was, it's location and how grand it is. It's in the 'mansion district' right off of Bellevue Avenue. We had a gift card from bedandbreakfast.com so I don't think I could afford to stay here during peak season. bedandbreakfast.com seems to limit which rooms you can stay in at the higher priced places, the room we stayed in isn't even mentioned on the Ivy Lodge website. It didn't really matter with this place though because the room we got, the Savannah room, was great. Fireplace, jacuzzi tub and a quiet room. The breakfast was OK. I did hear another guest complain he was hungry after eating his breakfast but he was accommodated. There's other things to nibble on if the main course doesn't fill you up. There were some pretty boring and stale muffins and cookies left out during the day. I didn't really care but if I was paying out of pocket, it would have cost me over $350 (in the winter) for a weekend stay, so I wouldn't be too happy about that. I honestly don't know why people spend so much for a room but these places in Newport certainly get what their asking. This place must be beautiful in the summer though. The porch was really nice and the yard was private with hedges all the way around the yard. I could imagine it's a nice place to spend a lazy afternoon. It would be nice to bring a bike and bike around the mansions. The common rooms are large and elegant. The innkeepers and help were lovely and the house is absolutely gorgeous. If the price doesn't scare you, by all means, this is your place.

Room Tip: the less expensive rooms are on the third floor but probably more quiet

Thank you for your thoughts. We think our location is great with just a short walk to everything Newport. We do serve smaller portions as we have so many things to try, most folks can't or don't want to eat as they are watching their weight. As for the stale items, we bake almost daily so not sure how that would have occurred. Thank you for letting us know your likes and hope to see you again at the Ivy Lodge.

We went to the Ivy Lodge as a birthday present, as well as a weekend getaway. The lodge was very nice, and the service even nicer! Breakfast was awesome, especially the Pecan Waffles! The sights were awesome. We visited three mansions, went on the Cliff Walk, as well as to the Casino. It was fun, even though we did not win.

The only downfall was the water pressure in the shower.

Because it is was still cold, we were not able to see the grounds.

We would visit the Lodge again, but probably try out another room.

Glad you enjoyed the breakfast! Sorry about the water pressure, we just installed another water line and an additional water heater so now we can make twice the hot water!
Hope to have you visit again!

Charming B&B, decorated with care and great antiques. Delicious breakfast of pecan apple homemade waffles and excellent service. Good location. Enjoyed the jacuzzi tub and gas fireplace. Would be happy to visit again when back in Newport.

Ivy Lodge is located near famous Newport mansions, only minutes from historic center of the town and from scenic Cliff walk. Carefully restored old house with beautiful “old New England” interiors make this inn truly exceptional. The bed in our room was not good – it was perfect. Overall, I intended to give this place 5 star rating, but… Despite of relatively high price (I paid almost $200 per night - off season!) breakfast was not so good to say at least. Poor selection of bread, no juices, no cold cuts… If you need sugar or carb free food, you have to fast. Hampton Inn on the highway offers better breakfast. To tell more about Ivy Lodge service: last morning of our stay we wanted to visit museum and asked for late check-out (like noon instead of 11 am), but were refused. Not typical for small expensive in, especially off season.

Hello Gregory! Thank you for taking the time to talk with us after we you posted your review and we are sorry that you felt we didn't live up to your expectations. As to the cost the rate was $179 for our most deluxe rooms, king bed, fireplace, wet bar with re frig, private bath with extra large two person whirlpool tub, glass and marble shower and double vanity we feel is a good value.

To clear up a couple of your issues, one we were not told about any special dietary issues you may have had such as low card or sugar free at the time of booking. We always have eggs as an option to our sweet dish, lots of guest although they may love sweets are watching the sugar or if cases of medical reason. We always have sugar free maple syrup as well. Several things which you state happen are not our normal course of business: We always have four or five types of breads, whole wheat, cinnamon raisin, bagels, English muffins and then a fresh baked good so not sure what type of bread you wanted and even during our conversation you were unable to tell me what type of bread that you would have liked added to our selection. Our juices are always in the refrigerator right under the coffee, we always have at least two types. You mention no cold cuts, this is something we would never offer. We get this in Europe, Latin and South America but not sure I have ever had cold cuts in the US for breakfast. I have nothing against them but in our opinion after 13 years of operation the Ivy Lodge there is no comparison to our breakfast and what you get at Hampton Inn. You mention wanting to stay until Noon which is after the 11:00 AM check out time and that you were refused, we normally honor request to stay until noon so not sure why that was the case or maybe the times you were requesting were different than in your review. This is not consistent with how we normally
respond to late check out request for a noon check out.

Again we are sorry that you were not happy with your stay but feel a few of your issues was because we were unaware of what you would have liked. In the future please let us know any dietary issues or if you would like juice please ask as we can't fix things we are unaware of.
Thank you again for staying at the Ivy Lodge, we do hope you will stay with us again!

My husband and I decided to go away at the last moment for New Years. We could not have picked a better place to stay and will now make this an annual event. The inn was decorated to perfection and it was hard to decide which of the common rooms to hang out in so we spent time in all or them! Breakfast both mornings was amazing and both Daryl and Darlene went out of their way to be warm and welcoming. Darlene even had a very nice appitizer spread for all the guests on NYE! Both were very accommodating with their suggestions on where to dine (Fluke and Momma Louisa's....Both a must!) and even made our reservations for us one night. Their warmth spread to all the guests and we met the nicest people there. And there was even a small wedding in front of the fire place on New Years Day! Truly wonderful inn keepers and we loved our stay.

Thank you for reviewing us. We enjoyed you too! That's the nice thing about owning a B&B, built in party and we didn't need to move our car. You made our New Years Eve, more lovable and friendly, as you can see by your review, your outlook on life is your reward and ours. We look forward to seeing you both again. Our best for a healthy, prosperous New Year, I'd say happy, but you two got that covered.

Warmly,
Darlene and Daryl

This B&B is located a block from the cliff walk and near the mansions. It's nestled on a quite street, but still close to the heart of Newport, away from all the traffic, hustle and bustle. We passed many B&Bs on the drive, and we're so glad we chose this one. The Inn is beautifully decorated, so elegant and charming, and so clean. We mostly interacted with the Inn keeper Daryl, who is so sweet and helpful. The breakfast prepared by Darlene was wonderful. We stayed in the Turret room which has a victorian feel. There is a lot of space and the private bath is very roomy. There isn't anything that this room didn't have: fireplace, refrigerator, tv, dvd/vcr, fireplace, whirlpool. Other couples were here during our visit and we didn't hear a sound. Our stay was very relaxing and peaceful. If you're looking for a bed and breakfast, this is the place to stay.

Your review comes at a time when we need it most, taking down the holiday decorations. You are the reason we spend so much energy putting them up, thank you for writing such a nice review.
It's a sunny, balmy day in Newport by New England standards. We too are grateful to live in a neighborhood were the trees are plentiful and the ocean is a stones-throw-away. On my break, I'm headed to the cliffwalk, this is my favorite time of year to walk the infamous walk, just a short stroll away. Hope to see you again this New Year.

Wishing fair winds and safe seas,
Darlene

Our stay here was just perfect! We thought the ivy lodge was beautiful and the breakfast was wonderful. The staff there was very attentive. They even said one the day of our check out, that we could come back and have a coffee and relax in front of the fire to warm up. Would absolutely go back.

Thank you for your review. We spend many hours decorating the Inn for the holidays so you can come, get inspired and just relax by the fire. We are so happy you did just that: explore Newport but still find time to recharge and relax. We are so grateful you found what you came for.

Cheers and Happy New Year!
