“The Lawn at Castle Hill”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2013

The Castle Hill Inn in Newport offers a magnificent view of the water. The lawn slopes down to the water's edge with Adirondack chairs for your use. Sit back and sip a libation while watching the many boats on the water. This property is just down from Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis's childhood home. There is no food served on the lawn, just drinks but what a wonderful place to enjoy the scenery. We did not stay at the Inn as "the lawn" (as it is known), is open to all.

This is my second year staying at the Castle Hill Inn. I love it. Stayed in the Martha Walsh room last year. This year we stayed in the Agassiz suite. Both rooms were lovely. The only issue I have is that the tevlevision in the living room of the suite was rather small. They should invest in a larger flat screen TV which would be more fitting for the space. The bathrooms are GREAT! LOVE THE SOAKING TUB! Large separate showers.
The staff is very accomodating, and polite. Simply put, a lovely place.
I plan on trying the beach houses next!

I am delighted that you chose to stay with us again. The Mary Walsh and Mrs. Agassiz rooms in the Mansion are some of my favorite accommodations here at Castle Hill, and soaking tub is ideal for unwinding after a busy day in Newport. I am so sorry that you were disappointed with the television. I truly appreciate your feedback, and it is certainly something that we will consider. Thank you for your remarks, and we look forward to welcoming you to one of our beach house for your next stay!

We just got back from two nights in the turret suite -- a room like no other you're likely to find. From your bedroom you go up a flight of circular stairs to a room that is all windows overlooking the bay, complete with sofa, chairs, refrigerator and a telescope to watch the boats drift by.

The bed was great and the bath superb. A tub in the turret suite allows you to soak while looking out the window. There are a couple of short walks around the grounds and a beautiful stretch of the legs along the ocean for the ambitious.

As interesting as this place is architecturally it is service that really shines here. These are either people who are exceptionally well trained or people who actually care, or both.

Breakfast, including a fabulous lobster hash and French press coffee, cannot be beaten. We've stayed in Newport at some other great B&Bs and another highly ranked hotel but the long history of this place holds up against anyone, and not just in Newport.

We stayed in the amazing Turret Suite for two nights IN THE WINTER IN A STORM and absolutely wallowed in the atmosphere. Former home of biologist Louis Agassiz, beautiful lawn, where I've lounged in wood chairs with linen cushions in the summer, drinking lemonade.

Thank you so much for sharing your feedback. I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay at the Turret Suite; it is the perfect place to curl up by the fire on a winter night. All of our staff take pride in our property's historic past, and we are looking forward to a bright future with the refreshed Lawn restaurant. We look forward to welcoming you back in any season!

Make sure you use the correct terminology when you make your reservation: the Beach Houses are the more spacious bungalows (with king-size beds) and they are charming. Spacious bathroom with tub and separate walk-in shower; everything clean and sparkling. Lovely Farmaesthetica bath amenities.

Your sliding door opens up to a deck and the beach just yards away. I've read reviews that state noise as an issue but we had neighbors on both sides and never heard a peep. It's a magical location where you can listen to the sound of the waves all day and night. There is a meandering path frequented by bunnies and butterflies that leads up the hill past the lighthouse to the main building where you can eat breakfast on the newly- expanded terrace and enjoy the spectacular views of Narragansett Bay. (By the way, in answer to a recent reviewer, I had the lobster hash twice and found no shells whatsoever)

Perfect reviews are boring so I will attempt to raise a quibble or two. The pillows are not as high quality as I would expect from a place this expensive. The room decor has a clunker here and there - Japanese bamboo prints in seaside Newport seem out of place. The TV is small and its location in the armoire makes it hard to watch from the bed. These are minor issues compared with the overall experience.

The staff is young but well-trained and very accommodating and welcoming. The breakfast food is better quality than that served at dinner but you can't beat the sunsets from the glassed-in dining room. Brian is the most accomplished server and has a commanding knowledge of wines and spirits.

Memorable spot. I can't imagine staying anyplace else in Newport.

Attended a wedding in the "tent" on the evening of a horrendous rain storm. The tent leaked EVERYWHERE, including waterfall leaks in numerous places!!! This was a "black tie" affair!!! Imagine woman and men dressed formally getting poured on, trying to wade through 3 inches of water in the flooded bathrooms!! The management was horrible, practically blaming the newlyweds for the problems that they couldn't handle!!! This is "allegedly" a reputable venue, they don't know how to handle rainy days?? THEN, I recently chatted with the Groom's mother and she tells me the wedding planners had been horrible to the bride and groom from the beginning. There are very pompous and pretentious! My advice to ANYONE who is considering Castle Hill as a wedding venue to RUN as fast as you can!!! There are so many other beautiful places in Newport to get married, this can never be your best choice!

Thank you very much for your comments. I can understand how frustrated you must have felt because of your experience, and for the bride and groom and their families. Unfortunately, that evening saw record rainfalls for our area, with over 7” of precipitation recorded in a four hour period. The Castle Hill Chalet, the structure to which the tent is attached, was built in the late 1800’s, and simply could not handle the volume of water we experienced. The 5,000 square foot custom tent, designed and installed for us last year by Sperry Tent of Marion, MA, is “state of the art”, but also could not withstand the extraordinary weather conditions that day. Our service team tried their best to work within these very unique and clearly less than ideal circumstances, but we are truly sorry that you came away from the evening disappointed. Each year, Castle Hill hosts approximately over eighty private events and we assure you that this was an isolated experience based on extraordinary weather circumstances. In order to combat future similar weather conditions, we will be adding additional pumps to the Chalet lower level to ensure we are better equipped for future severe weather events, and we are working with the tent designers to address any issues as well.

Please also know that we have been in contact with the family regarding their experience.

Sincerely,

Brian Young

Since we didn't get the beach house we were promised but got another, we were disappointed. They have made amends in that regard. We had shell in our lobster at lunch and dinner. The dinner was the degustation with wine; very expensive so that also disappointed. Our tea was perfect though. Breakfast, we didn't dare get our favorite lobster hash after the other 2 incidents. Our wait for cold food was over 45 min. as we watched diners arrive after us and leave before us. We have been promised that upon our return, someday, we will be shown that the usual standard, which we have often enjoyed previously, will convince us that this was an unusual experience. We surely hope so as this has always been our favorite place.

Room Tip: Beach houses are spectacular but they told me, after this mix up, none can be specifically reserved...
