“Expensive but good in general”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2013

Expensive, Hip but loud atmosphere, Friendly and helpful staff, good food -- We went to Newport for the weekend and stayed at a local hotel next door to the Forty 1 North. It happened to be Restaurant Week so we decided to eat out most of the time. On our final evening we chose to go to The Grill at Forty 1 North. We called at 10 am for reservations and had a choice of 5 or 930pm. After deciding we called back to book the 930 and were told 9pm had opened up. Score! We reserved the time and were then told that if we got there a little earlier we may luck out and get seated earlier. Sounded good to us! So we got to the restaurant at 835ish and entered the dimly lit and very loud restaurant. It was stylish and modern and very busy. The hostess(?) greeted us and we told her we had reservations. She brought us to the maitre de(?) station and said shed find someone to seat us. She was very nice but didnt do much more than lead us to wait. So we waited about 5min and finally the maitre de said we could sit at the bar and wait if we liked. So we sat and had the bar tender walk past us 5 or 6 times before acknowledging us. (I really think it was because they were so busy, I dont think he was being rude but...not even an "ill be right with you") Finally he said hello and we ordered our drinks. He recommended a very good Rose I enjoyed very much. By the time our drinks were poured our table was ready and the maitre de carried my wine for me and pulled my chair out and pushed it in for me. The room was nice if not extremely dark and again VERY LOUD (people talking). We had to use the flashlight on my phone to read the menu. Our waiter Jonathan was very nice and perfectly helpful. He answered all of our questions and made great recommendations. He was also obligingly social but did his job well. The food was good but not outstanding (besides the enormous shrimp cocktail that could be an entree itself and is well worth the $23 price tag). I could have had the same food elsewhere for much less but the modern and hip atmosphere was also comfortable and enjoyable. We are in the 30 - 50 age range with no kids and would certainly return to this restaurant in the future but probably only on special occasions as our dinner that night (cocktails, apps and entrees for two plus tip) was over $200.00. A good experience overall.

This is a beautiful place. The decor is magnificient and the location ideal. Fantastic for a getaway trip. The staff was very nice and the food at the restaurant was very good. My wife and I highly recommend this small hotel.

Room Tip: Natrurally harbour view for the sunset is the best!

My son, his fiancée and I came here to look for a wedding venue. The space is beautiful and the staff is very accommodating. We ate lunch here and it was wonderful. The bloody Marys were perfect, interesting teas and great selection for weekend brunch. Would recommend dining here when in Newport. Can only be more beautiful in the summer!

There is no doubt that this hotel is beautiful and that its image is perfect for those seeking a trendy/chic experience. The decor is terrific with many modern and surprising details. Unfortunately, the hotel's focus on modern and "different" leaves some basic comforts behind.

Pros

- Beautiful interior to the lobby, restaurant, bar and room.
- Wonderful harbor view.
- Dinner at the Grille was terrific.

Cons

- Strange check-in experience, as there is no reception desk and guests are left standing confused for a bit in the lobby/lounge area until a staffer approches with IPad in hand and asks "can I help you."
- The "harbor view suite" is not what is commonly deemed a suite. We paid extra for a "suite" because we like for one person to be able to continue sleeping uninterrupted while the other reads, watches tv, has lights on, etc. in the other sitting room. This was NOT A SUITE, as it DID NOT consist of multiple rooms. Just one room with the "sitting area" being two chairs at the foot of the bed. When I asked about this, I was told "Oh yes, it's a studio suite." OK. Not sure what I paid extra for then, as the room was not even very big. This should be called a "deluxe guestroom" or (at least) a "studio suite" or "junior suite."
- No mention of the $25/night parking fee until after you have already made your reservation and deposit.
- Loud music plays through some of the hotel. In our room, the bass of the lobby jazz music could be heard through most of the day.
- Though the room had an extensive (and expensive) minibar, there were absolutely no complimentary refreshments. No bottled water. No coffee. (These days, even mediocre hotels seem to have Keurig machines in the rooms. For $500+ per night, I would have liked a hassle-free cup of coffee in my room.)
- The IPad in the room was a nice touch, but there was no visible clock anywhere in the room. As I was repeatedly awakened by noise and thumping bass, I would have liked to be able to glance at the clock and see how much sleeping time I had left.
- The bathroom is gorgeous but needs some serious tweaks to make functional sense. It was nearly impossible to apply makeup in the bathroom, as the lighting at the mirror was very dim and there was no vanity mirror. In addition, the bathroom door is nearly 100% frosted glass panel, so turning the light on for a midnight bathroom trip lights up the entire sleeping area.

So ... this is a beautiful hotel, but we did not find it particularly comfortable and will not be back.

We stayed as a family of four (kids aged 7 and 4) in October 2012, during the 3 nights that Hurricane Sandy hit Newport. The irony of travelling from the UK to have a short New England luxury holiday, only to be greeted with my namesake hurricane, was not lost on us!

Despite this (and the fact only one other party stayed at the hotel those three nights), the staff were unbelievable gracious, making our visit a really fun and cozy one. We stayed in the main suite with the two fireplaces, and tucked up with books and the tv for the three days. Room service always made an effort to give us the food we needs, although we did venture out once for necessities and it was not too bad.

Newport itself is lovely and we managed to have a few great meals and do some shopping the day we left. We would love to go back to this hotel and stay in the original cottages we booked outside, which were deemed too unsafe to use during the hurricane. The restaurants and lounge areas in the sleek downstairs lobby are, during "normal" times, a delight I'm sure.

It has taken months to write this review but we wanted to thank the staff (especially Vanessa) for being so helpful and available during what was unfortunately a bad storm and tough time for that part of the US region.

Room Tip: If you can spring for it, get the main suite, which is like a small new York apartment!

My husband and I stayed at Forty One North for Winter Fest. We were happy that we could bring our dog-though there is a pet fee. The location was awesome as it was within walking distance to all the shops and restaurants on Thames St and America's Cup Blvd. We chose a package in which parking and breakfast were included. Parking was right in front of the hotel and the breakfast was phenomenal- eggs any style, two huge pieces of hand cut French toast, fruit and fresh squeezed orange juice. The front desk staff was friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay here again.

Forty 1 North is in a great location and has the most freindly staff around. Rooms are very clean. Two outstanding restaurants on location. We highly recommend this hotel. Also have suites and bigger rooms if needed. The staff we help you out with anything, they will let you know what's going on during your stay and also recommend things to do. We really loved it and plan on returning soon. Tom & Linda Dolan

Room Tip: Every room is great
