Owner description: In Newport, RI, the leading architects of the 19th and early 20th centuries built magnificent mansions for the nation's social and financial elite. These "summer cottages" provided the backdrop for a society centered on sport, fashion and parties in settings of spectacular natural beauty. Ten of these properties have been preserved by The Preservation Society of Newport County and are open to the public. From the homes of a colonial merchant and leading China traders of the Victorian era, to the great Italian and French Renaissance palaces of the Gilded Age, these houses span over 250 years of American architectural and social history.Visit the Newport Mansions: The Breakers, Marble House, Rosecliff, Chateau-sur-Mer, The Elms, Isaac Bell House, Kingscote, Chepstow, Hunter House, and Green Animals Topiary Garden.

“Magnificent Mansions”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2011

Unbelievable! You have to take in these magnificent "cottages" (mansions). Ornate detail, grand styling, show of oppulance and beautiful views of the Atlantic. Wonderful experience. I would suggest a "membership" ticket and view all of the mansions.

“Incredible”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2011

We visited The Breakers, Marble House, Rosecliff, The Elms, and Chateau Sur Mer. They are absolutely incredible. Imagining that they were family "summer cottages" is unbelievable. The audio tours (at all but Chateau Sur Mer) were educational and interesting. The personal tour at Chateau Sur Mer was awesome. Our tour guide included lots of details. It must have been quite something to attend some of the fabulous parties they described!

Each house takes approximately 1 hour to visit, given that you listen to some of the additional stories provided. You're also allowed to explore the grounds. At a couple of them, there is food available. They don't allow strollers inside any of the houses, and there is no photography allowed inside.

“I was pleasntly surprised...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2011

I love anything to do with home decor and antiques. Add some history and opulence and I'm a goner. Although I only took the time to visit the Breakers, it was worth it. I took the tour bus for the Newport area. Our Guide was fantastic and made the tour fun and memorable. When he dropped us off at the Breakers, we had the day to ourselves. The self-guided audio tour laid out the home beautifully. I was pleasantly surprised. No pictures taken allowed inside. Be prepared to walk and stand for a few hours. I didn't mind at all. Our tour guide picked us back up and we completed the tour of Newport. A full day.

“Loved the Mansion tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2011

We toured the Breakers mansion, built by the Vanderbuilt family. Loved it!! You get an audio that explains the history of the family and the mansion itself. Worth every penny! I wish we had time to see more.
