Owner description: The most impressive of the Newport mansions, this 13-acre estate received its name from the cherished view of waves crashing against rocks. The Italian Renaissance summer "cottage," whose construction included transporting European artisans to apply gold leaf and other artistic touches, was owned by one of America's most prosperous families, the Vanderbilts.

“Top House in Newport”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2013

If you're going to tour one mansion in Newport, this is it. The self guided audio is extremely well done. You can do the basic play back or get add'l info. The house is grand and impeccably maintained. Rivals similar buildings in Europe. Don't miss the outdoor space or nearby Cliff Walk.

“Amazing!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2013

Well, when money is no object, you can create "the Breakers". Probably the most impressive and opulent entrance/reception hall I have seen since visiting Versailles! The second floor is a bit more pedestrian, but still awe inspiring. And then some tin-pot architect suggested that it be torn down because of its architectural "unimportance" - what a moron!

“Always the favorite”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2013

It is amazing how much money was spent on these mansions given how little time was spent. This place is very interesting and gives another interesting view over the ocean.

“Must see in Newport”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2013

Breakers is the most luxurious and opulent of the Guilded Age mansions in Newport. If you only go and see one mansion, you probably have to pick it over any others. Audio-guide system is shared across all mansions managed by the local Preservation Society, but at Breakers, the structure of the guide is most excellent and enlightening.

“GREAT AUDIO TOUR”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2013

this is a self guided audio tour, and took about 1 1/2 hours, if you listen to the additional info available.

The money spent on what was a summer house was incredible, you have to see it to beleive it !!

If you plan to visit more than one of the Historical society homes you can buy a multi ticket and save money. Free car parking is available accross from the house.
