Owner description: The most impressive of the Newport mansions, this 13-acre estate received its name from the cherished view of waves crashing against rocks. The Italian Renaissance summer "cottage," whose construction included transporting European artisans to apply gold leaf and other artistic touches, was owned by one of America's most prosperous families, the Vanderbilts.

A great audio tour of a fantastic mansion. Amazing to see the marvelous splendor. Just one of a number of properties to see in the area.

“Marvel at the sheer scale and design”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2012

There are obviously plenty of mansions to visit in Newport, but The Breakers really has to be the one. It has 70 rooms in total and is just breathtaking. You are provided with headphones for the tour so you can go at your own pace, and the audio quality and performance was very good in comparison to others I've used. It was late October so it wasn't too busy but I can imagine it must be very crowded in the summer. The decor in the rooms is just amazing and as the name suggests there are wonderful views over the cliffs towards the ocean. A must see.

“Unbelievable size and opulence”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2012

If you go during the summer, you will find a long line to get in. Try visiting in early spring or fall or even during the winter. It stays open all year, and it is especially pretty at Christmas time!

“Interesting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

If you are only going to visit one mansion, make it this one. It is good value for money and offers you a tour using a pre-recorded headset, allowing you to complete the tour in your own time. Very interesting.
