“Disappointing...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2012

We went to Viking Co. with high hopes. I love stumbling upon a great dive restaurant that is truly a gem. The other reviews were right.. it doesn't look like much from the outside and it is obviously about 4 blocks into a bad neighborhood, but that didn't scare us off. The waitstaff was very friendly - they sat us within about 10 minutes even though we didn't have a reservation. Immediately brought us glasses for the beer we brought and a chill bucket.

Our waitress mentioned many specials that sounded incredible; we ordered the clams casino, stuffed banana peppers and a halibut filet each for dinner. Dinner came with a salad and soup. One bite into the clam and I wanted to spit it out. They were not fresh; in fact they almost tasted spoiled. I could only bring myself to eat one. The stuffed banana peppers were good, 2 came with the appetizer. I was surprised to see that the core/seeds were still in the banana peppers - but it didn't bother me. The salads were delicious - my favorite part of the meal (which isn't saying much). We both got the basil parmesan dressing which was fresh and had a bite of garlic. My date ordered the clam chowder soup (I politely declined since I was becoming full) and said it was watery and without flavor. He only ate about 3 spoonfuls. Last out came the fish - covered in SALT! I couldn't even eat more than 2 bites because it was so drenched in seasoned salt and oil. The french fries I ordered with my fish were obviously frozen and the brown rice that came with my date's fish looked plain and uninspired.

All in all I was very disappointed in this restaurant - I will not be going back. I actually feel a little bad about this review because I wanted to like this restaurant. Food is horrible though, don't waste your money because on top of everything, it wasn't cheap!

“Freshest, best seafood in Buffalo--hospitality to match”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2011

If you are looking for a polished brass and glass fern bar you'll be disappointed. If you are looking for outrageously good seafood, you'll be thrilled. The owner is also a wholesale fish supplier for fish markets and restaurants in western New York, so here you will find every kind of fish, simply a day fresher than anywhere else. Known for gigantic lobster, they always seem to have sword fish, halibut, salmon, haddock, mussels, clams, crab, shrimp, all over-sized and just out of this world. Jeff the chef and Carmen the manager seem to prefer to spoil their guests rather than squeeze the last dollar out of us. Hey, can it get better than bring your own drinks? They set up with buckets of ice water for your beer or wine or other---I don't remember seeing a corkage fee either...if it's your birthday you get to wear the Viking Horn Hat--a dream come true for many as we know----they have an appetizer called The Pile--which is enormous and consists of a huge pile of shellfish --mussels, crab legs, shrimp, clams,--they have great salmon and fish fries-Viking Paellea--steak and chicken for land lubbers---it's an insider's favorite---don't let the outside and the neighborhood scare you off---they also sell their fish from a deli--about half the price for the same thing down the street in a fish market!

“Amazing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2011

This restaurant is truly a gem. Based on the exterior of the building, we were ready to drive away. That would have been a huge blunder. The interior of the restaurant is absolutely designed for your dining pleasure. We ordered the steak and the lobster feast. Both dishes were phenomenal. The clams casino were to die for, the stuffed peppers, hot and cheesy. The soups were well flavored. The salad was okay, but the entrees were to die for. Service was impeccable and it's always nice to have a repartee with the owner who came to our table and chatted with us. The atmosphere was casual and we were made to feel that we could take our time and enjoy the feast presented to us. Which is exactly what we did. Bringing your own beverage was a total bonus!

“Passing the cost of rotten seafood onto their customers!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2011

What started out great quickly took a turn for the worst. We arrived and were seated in our own private room, we had a party of 7. The waiter (who was excellent) brought out ice buckets for our beer (BYOB which is great!) and was more than accommodating. We ordered two boiler platters as an appetizer. It consisted of shrimp (pretty good), Clams (good), Crab Legs (ROTTEN), and Mussels, (BEYOND ROTTEN)! This appetizer should never have been served; the foul odor would make a sewer rat gag! The horrendous, rotten fish didn't end there. One member in our party received a rotten piece of “fresh” salmon, and the crab legs made another, stink filled appearance on a dinner platter. All of the food must have been boiled in the same water as the spoiled mussels even the greens and shrimp in the GRILLED STEAK AND SHRIMP were boiled and tainted with a rancid stench and taste. After complaining to management due to the foul stink and taste the owner/head chef came out and was trying to make excuses for the food. No excuses were needed as we just wanted to leave the horrific smelling Viking Lobster Company. He thought a generous compromise was to take a whopping 25% off our bill. Our party stated that this was not acceptable as we were unable to consume at least 50% of the spoiled food that was served to us. Their response to this was to become enraged and to call the police. In trying to negotiate with the owner, as it was completely un-necessary and childish to call the police on people refusing to pay 75% of the cost of rotten, spoiled seafood he became enraged and got in the face of a perfectly calm "guest." In order to just get out of there we said that we would pay 2/3 of the bill, which the Officer’s observed and were okay with and we could finally get out of the restaurant and get some fresh air.

This was the worst dining experience I have ever been a part of. This place must be bleeding cash, trying to pass off rotten and spoiled seafood as good, forcing unsuspecting customers to pay for it under the threat of charges.

I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT YOU NEVER EVER GO TO THE VIKING LOBSTER COMPANY!!!

“The Viking Lobster Company is located in the historic Black Rock neighborhood of Buffalo (Cross st. is Austin st...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2009

The Viking Lobster Company is located in the historic Black Rock neighborhood of Buffalo (Cross st. is Austin st.). The Viking Company is only open on Fridays & Saturdays from 5 - 10pm (which has not been updated on their website). As you approach the restaurant, you might have second thoughts about whether its open or whether its a place you want to dine at, but its deceiving. The inside is all refinished wood work, white table clothes, etc. They do not have an alcohol license of anykind, but it is BYOB as of this review! We stopped in early on a Friday night and was seated immediately (it did get quite busy later on and would suggest reservations to be safe). The menu has a couple of Chicken & steak dishes, but this one page menu consists mainly of different Lobster dishes and Seafood Feasts. We began our meal with the Clams Casino, which were big and the filling was very good. Next, we were served our soups that came with our meals; Seafood Chowder and Lump-Crab Gumbo. Both were filled with chucks of fresh seafood. For entrees, we had the Lobster Alfredo and a 4lb Lobster (which was grabbed from their 1,000 gallon saltwater Lobster tank and steamed. You can order from 1lb - 5lb Lobster). Both were excellent. We ended our meal with slices of Chocolate-Rasberry Cheescake. If you are looking for your Lobster Fix, the Viking Lobster Company is the place to go!
