Owner description: Welcome to the Burchfield Penney Art Center, the only museum exclusively dedicated to the art and artists of Western New York – including famed American watercolorist Charles E. Burchfield. From the moment you first step through our doors, you will be surrounded by inspirational, thought-provoking and world-renowned artwork. The Burchfield Penney features more than 30 exhibitions annually. While many are curated from our extensive collections, we often bring new work into the museum through temporary exhibitions and works on loan. As a result, no visit to the Burchfield Penney is ever the same.

“Nice museum with friendly people”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2009

Charles Burchfield was not a painter I learned about in art history classes, but he's apparently a fairly important painter from the first half of the 20th Century, especially in the movement known as American Scene. Burchfield is probably best known for his gorgeous "seasons" paintings filled with bright summer or fall colors. Unfortunately, at the time I visited, the museum had mostly industrial scenes on display - a lot of black, grey, white, and smokestacks. Still nice, but they relegate much less than half of the museum to his work, and they don't have room to display nearly all they have. There must be some reason why they don't use more space to showcase his work, but if I lived near Buffalo, I certainly would return to see his beautiful work. It was a bit sad, in a way, that when I went into the gift shop, THERE I saw representations of Burchfield's fantastic Seasons paintings (he worked largely in watercolors). Still I enjoyed the gift shop very much, and the woman there said I might be able to have a print made through them of my favorite Burchfield painting even though it was in a museum in Memphis. Also, there was a nice patio on the second floor where I could sit and relax and a tasty sandwich shop. Plan about an hour to see the museum, but longer if you want to investigate the museum shop -- it may seem like a strange reason to visit a museum, but much of Burchfield's work is both unusual and highly decorative. I wouldn't be surprised if most people visiting the museum want something for their walls. The museum is across the street from the Knox-Albright Gallery which has a nice collection of modern art and very close to lovely Delaware Park featuring Hoyt Pond.
