I visited Anchor Bar this evening during a short passage in Buffalo for work. It's probably the most authentic and atmospheric place I've been to in Buffalo so far. I enjoyed the kitschy decor--a Chinese terra cotta warrior out front (I think that's what it was), old license plates and photos of celebrities on the walls (one was of Hillary Clinton, although there was no dedication to evidence her actually having been there). My large group ordered a huge mess of food, almost all of it extremely mediocre. The eggplant Parmesan resembled a Yule log, the pizza look very appetizing but had too much processed mozzarella and too little taste and the pasta was bland. But the side salad was very good and the Montepulciano, at $14 a bottle, was fabulously drinkable. Then there was the wings. Worth the visit in themselves. Copious, nicely and proudly presented, how bad delicious. This was the moment when Buffalo finally made a genuine on me. This is their product and they represent it well. Fun and thoroughly worth a return visit. Lovely waitress named Natalie.
