I have ridden horses before, extensively, but my boyfriend had not. It's been almost six years since I've been horseback riding, so I have been itching to go lately. While on vacation, we decided to splurge and do an hour long horseback ride. The wrangler was good at explaining to my boyfriend what he needed to do to communicate with the horse and had him practice. It was just the two of us and the wrangler so that was nice. We were only encouraged to tip once by our wrangler. I don't remember his name but he was very friendly. He also took pictures of us on the horses at the end of our ride.
I miss really riding horses whereas this was much more low key, walking through the forest. The "climbs" we did were just small hills. The one hour trail ride was completely manageable for anyone that's new to horses. That's honestly all I was expecting however, and all my boyfriend could manage at this point, so I do totally understand as these places must cater to non-riders. If nothing else, it certainly helped get my boyfriend on a horse and open up new possibilities to him. I have a sneaking suspicion he enjoyed himself more than he anticipated.
The price is comparable to other places that I have priced for riding and the location is perfect if you're staying in Flagstaff. We considered other cheaper places, but the drive to them made this one preferable.
