“Little known gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2014

We were pleasantly surprised to find that this area of previous volcanic activity, in the Coconino National Forest, has been so well preserved for the public. The visitors' center started us off with a good education; then we drove to the parking area near the pathways and hiking trails around the crater. An amazing amount of work has gone into moving some of the hardened volcanic rock to enable visitors to enjoy the terrain. to be honest, we enjoyed this park even more than some of those we visited in Hawaii (not all, but some.)

Just a short drive outside of Flagstaff , it is worth making it a "top of the list" item. You can spend as little as an hour or two, or several hours, if you care to take some long hikes.

“Super cool and completely unexpected!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2014

We decided to take a quick detour to see Wupatki and the Crater, but had no idea what to expect... Ummm, awesomeness! I was a little sad that you couldn't walk to the crater edge, but what evs it was still really amazing to see the lava fields and what not!!! Loved it! So worth the drive as you are on your way to phoenix!

“Worth the side-trip, especially in the winter”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2014

3=meets expectations, 4=exceeds.
Heading up from Sedona for an overnight stay at the Grand Canyon gave us time for this 3 hour diversion. You could spend more time, or less, depending on how many stops you make at Sunset Monument and Wupatki Monument.
On a winter week-day late morning, we did the 1-mile long "Lava Flow" interpretive loop in almost solitude. There was a couple just finishing when we started, and a group of 4 starting when we finished. On thing that particularly intrigued me was a stop where you looked out to the San Francisco mountain complex and the booklet outlines what the stratovolcano would've looked like before it blew. Cool!
If you've gotten your fill of Idaho's Craters of the Moon NM any time recently and are at all pressed for time, you can probably skip this volcanic NM; it's not as desolate and arresting as the CMNM.

“Really cool to see”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2014

Be sure to stop in the visitors center. Hard to believe how many volcanoes and vents there are in the area. We did a couple of side hikes that were really neat. I'm sure its great in the summer.

“Great place to head to”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2014

Great place to head up to for a half day on your way to the canyon. You cant go into the crater but it is a good restful spot to pull out a picnic.
