“With the experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013

Initially we drove to a pull up spot to look at it, all grey and black pumice. Not what you would normally rave about but beautiful in it's own way.

We then took the short walk through the ancient lava flows, all twisted and knotted. I kept trying to imagine it as boiling hot lava. You could see nature reclaiming it, growing on the now fertile ground.

I thoroughly enjoyed this eerie landscape and recommend it, particularly thinking of how the life cycle of this volcano and crater go hand in hand with that of the ancient people who lived in the area.

“Too bad we couldn't explore it”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2013

We were able to drive the road through the NM but park rangers were driving around enforcing the closure of trails and lookouts due to the gov't shutdown.

This was like another world. Don't miss it. There are many other things to see in this area so take your time and don't miss any of them.

“Out of the way, but worth it.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2013

Since neither of us EVER saw a crater prior to this trip, thought we should see the sights in the area on our "free" day......it was nice. There were other things to see at this facility, so it just wasn't the crater.

“Neat Topography”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2013

Nice little hike to the crater. Good view of the different soil(?) conditions. Native vegetation along the path. We went with a tour, so our visit was short. Probably still long enough for most folks. You can take some nice photos of this unique environment, up close.
