“Elegance of yesteryear”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2012

A perfectly situated hotel in the centre of busy cosmopolitan Flagstaff. The hotel has a certain 'seedy elegance' that errs on the side of charming. some rooms are named after previous famous guests which is a nice touch. There is an excellent bar adjoining the hotel with nightly entertainment. Overall a very pleasant experience.

The staff were arrogant from the first interaction. Halfway between checking us in the front desk guy started chatting with other staff members for 10 mins.
Parking is very limited. If you don't mind walking two blocks then there is enough public parking.
The location is great. But that's it with anything positive.
Our room wasn't made up for the second night. This was dismissed as a glitch without apology. "the maids have gone home already, do you need ME to make your bed?"
After having to ask for it new towels were provided. This time I got a "heartfelt" apology after asking how this could happen: "sorry sir".
The rooms are very noisy, the doors slam, the beds squeak (yes, we could hear someone going at it at 6:30 in the morning).

Absolutely loved this place. The rooms are not ritzy, but clean and comfortable. The location is excellent, with several great eateries around. The Hotel has a Lounge with pool tables, making having a couple of cocktails and pool games fun, without worrying about getting a DUI. The staff couldn't have been nicer or more accomodating. Upon learning that the parking lot was full, the guy behind the counter went out and moved his car to the street, so that we wouldn't have to. The bartenders were fun and friendly, and the Thai food place next door was amazing...we will definately be back...

Just ask to see the room before you pay. They may say: “we don’t give tours.” If they do, just say “I don’t want a tour, I just want to see if my room looks like a “historic” room or whether it looks like a hotel that rents by the hour.” If they still won’t show you, then I would leave.

But don’t fret. You can still get the same experience I had at this historic hotel, even if you don’t stay at the hotel. Just go sit in the hotel bar till 2 in the morning. I wasn’t in the bar, but I might as well have been. It was raging into the night. I shouldn’t complain. I have been meaning to get caught up on all of my heavy metal music, and this hotel allowed me to finally do so.

The bathroom was truly a historic bathroom. Just like in the history books, this bathroom did not have counters, doors that could open without hitting the toilet, or showers that you could bend over in without hitting your head on the shower wall. What a rewarding experience.

Historic smishtoric! This place was scary! First of all,you have to make sure you ask for a bathroom in your room, otherwise your are sharing one in the hallway...dorm style. Secondly, the pictures on their website are apparently only of their upper floors that have recently been remodeled. If you have a pet,you can only stay on the second floor. Those rooms look NOTHING like the rooms on the website. I actually thought The Shining may have been filmed there. I sneezed all night because im allergic to cats and thats what the room smelled like.
As for the location, its in the heart of everything and that was the one plus.

We spend 3 nights here. For me it was well worth every penny just for the location in the middle of downtown Flagstaff. The location is very convenient for walking all around downtown and NAU, and you can go to the many breweries nearby and not have to worry about driving anywhere after.

We stayed in a room with 1 queen bed and a shared bath. Due to the shared bath, the room was a lot less expensive than a room with a bath. I really didn't mind walking down the hall to shower. It was a busy summer weekend and the bathrooms were never occupied. The showers were very small, but it is a very old hotel, so I didn't expect anything larger.

The room was very small, but we didn't spend much time there. The carpet needed to be cleaned, but the bed was clean and comfy and the staff was friendly. If you are a light sleeper, this may not be for you, we could hear people getting out of the bars until after 2 am, but the A/C unit drowned that out pretty well.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a shared bath to save a lot of money. If you choose this route, bring your shower...
