The extent of this forest is truly breathtaking and the virtually unbroken stand of trees (mainly it seems, Ponderosa Pines) which covers hundreds of square kilometres, shows nature, preserved, valued and appreciated, at her very best. Also, the parks and wildlife people we encountered were uniformly friendly, knew their stuff and were very helpful and accommodating. The forest is absolute wilderness and although there are bear, cougar and deer around, which probably require certain cautions and common sense, we saw only deer. There are many places where one can stop and picnic and enjoy what is a pristine wilderness area, remarkable for the blanket of trees which stretch to the horizon in every direction. We loved it and it contributes much character to the extraordinary landscapes of northern Arizona.
