5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2009

This hotel is a historic landmark. It is made of marble inside and looks like a 5 star place. Its clean, elegant and has a lot of character to it. The service is very good and helpful. The room was very spacious and clean as well. Local people visit the hotel often for meals and drinks and it makes the place pretty lively. The Trax pub in the hotel has great food and drinks. Carmen's restaurant is a little expensive. I would surely go back to Radisson again. Good luck!!

My husband and I stopped here for the night while on the road to upstate NY. Despite reviewers' comments about the indifferent staff we found them all to be nice and accommodating. The building itself is beautiful - a grand train station from a forgotten era. Compared to the grand entrance the rooms weren't quite so grand. They were clean but the bathroom was very small and basic. My husband loved the sleep number bed but I'm not a big fan. The wireless internet service was fast & reliable. The fitness center was a big disappointment. But the martini bar downstairs was a great find! There was live music, a lively happy hour, good drinks, really good food and it was non-smoking! We wanted to try the 4 Diamond Restaurant and Wine Bar in the hotel's lobby but it was too smokey (cigarette smoke).

We were driving through Scranton late and tried to get a room at a roadside hotel. They were booked but the desk clerk called the Radisson and they had a room for us at $99. I was a little leery but he told me it was nice and it was!

The hotel is too cool. It is an old train station! The room we got had two queen beds--both were sleep number beds which my teenager loved. We had a spectacular view of Scranton "the Electric City."

The hotel is near historic Steamtown National Historic Park. But, don't miss the giant 19th century iron furnaces a very short walk behind the hotel. The signs explain them well and they are awe inspiring.

Checked out, drove to a college in New York, and then returned to Scranton again. We checked with the hotel to stay another night. At first thy were full but as the day wore on they had cancellations. I learned that the later you wait the lower the rate goes down. Thus the $99 rate we got the night before at 10:00. We paid $139 at about 6:00 pm for our second night but with AAA discount it was $125 which I still think was a deal!

It didn’t bother us because we were on a "have fun and tour college trip" but the lobby of the hotel is the restaurant and the noise/smells do carry up the open atrium to the rooms.

During dinner one night we sat at a table near the bar entrance, by accident, we ended up moving to a different spot because as the night wore on smoke poured out of the bar. And, for those who are interested in nightlife, the bar seemed happening.

It is nice to say you stayed here.......mostly because of the historical nature of the building. But, as hotels go this one has a lot of room for improvement. The staff was friendly enough and helpful but made a billing error that they then denied. The rooms were too small and very average. We had no microwave, no mini refrig and there was only a one cup coffee maker. The bathrooms were about the size of a large closet. Way too small. So much for the Sleep Number beds they promote.....they were not comfortable and I did not sleep well one of our two nights there. Also the rooms were very noisy.....it it was not the noise coming from the air conditioner it was the noice from the adjoining room......we could actually hear the lady staying next to us word for word during her telephone conversations....! The building itself is pretty impressive when you pass it from the outside and when you are inside the lobby. That is really all you need to do to to take in this hotel.........pull into the parking lot and visit the lobby. If you look at the building closely on the outside you will see it is not being maintained very well. We walked one block to Molly Brannigans for dinner since the hotel food was so expensive. When we returned we tried to get to our car in the parking area behind the hotel by climbing the stairs that are part of the hotel building and lead to the lot. The stairs were terribly littered with cigarette butts and cigarette packages and other disgusting stuff. The gate at the top of the stairs was padlocked. The first morning we ordered the Express breakfast. The food was good.........especially the pancakes but our bill came to $74.00 for two adults and three young children.....and all my wife had was a bowl of oatmeal! Overall, this hotel is very overpriced for what they offer. It is not geared towards families with small children so we will not be staying there again. Go see Steamtown instead.........and stay somewhere else.

We arrived without a prior booking and were amazed we were able to stay in this beautiful building. Everyone was most helpful - from the desk clerk to waiters to the general staff we came across. The exterior of the building is quite imposing, the interior is simply breathtaking. The marble columns, stained glass ceilings, the fountain and flowers etc etc etc. We had a lovely dinner and breakfast in the most wonderful surroundings and couldn't believe our luck in being able to soak in the atmosphere of this amazing historic building. We read previous reviews before going there and had some doubts but I am really glad we didn't let the other reviews put us off. If we were ever in the area again we definitely wouldn't even consider another place to stay. If you in particular have any interest in the railway history of Scranton, you simply cannot stay anywhere else.

The hotel is in downtown Scranton. Typically when we visit Scranton we have stayed in one of the chain hotels closer to the interstate. This time we decided to try the Lackawanna given its location and the thought that it might be an interesting place to stay. We checked in around 7:00 pm. We had several problems which included a poorly cleaned room (there was a used towel left on the back of the bathroom door), a noisy air-conditioner and a non-functioning ice machine on the floor. The room was large but looked a little shabby. The shower handle was ready to fall off. There was a musty smell. The air-conditioner sounded like a lawnmover everytime it turned on which was approximately every 30 minutes during the night.
Some of the issues can be expected, but the overall lack of response by the young (apparently inexperienced) front desk sealed our poor opinion of the hotel. This was further compounded several hours after we checked out and my wife realized that the last time she had used her credit card was checking in at the Lackawanna the evening prior. While the front desk was kind enough to hold the card, there had been no effort to notify us while at the hotel that the card was left there. The lobby is beautiful and I hear the restaurant is good. In the future I'll stick to the other hotels.

I was not satisfied with this hotel. The rooms were a little small and a bit noisy. The room I stayed in had a jumbo tron billboard across the street that lit up my room at night. Which would have been fine if the room had drapes to close out the light. My husband and I were up at 7 am due to the sun in our room because of the no drapes. Another problem was the horrible bed that is supposed to be top quality and rated the best. Well it felt as if I was sleeping in a water bed and had back problems for a few days afterward. The sleep number bed was supposed to help but no matter where we placed it nothing worked or was that comfortable. The downstairs restaurant called TRAX was over priced and not good food or service. We were the only ones in there and the waiter was having a better time talking to his work buddies than waiting on us. The food was small and not that great. The stay wasn't great and I would not recommend staying there.
