“Very unfriendly”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2013

We called in for a coffee and a snack, we were greeted by a very unfriendly young lady, who was most unhelpful, so we walked out and went elsewhere. As someone who works in the tourist industry it pays to have a good attitude to your customers

“Coffee, and quirkyness”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 21, 2012

One can buy books next door, and enjoy a hot cup of coffee without ever having to step outside, no visit to Sitka is complete without a stop at the Back Door Cafe - ask about the Dreadlock Book - it makes excellent reading and is also fun to look at.
Thier staff is not only curteous, but also very attractive, especially the woman who does shows for Raven Radio.

“Great Spot to Learn What's Happening in Sitka”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2012

This tiny coffee shop is nestled in the back room of the locally owned book store. Entrance to the cafe is through the back door of the book store (or through the front of the book store if it is opened. The Back Door opens in the morning for coffee and fresh baked goods. The cherry pie is considered one of the specialities. But I loved the hazelnut scones. The lemon/blueberry bars are also excellent. The place is also opened for lunch, but don't wait too long to grab lunch. They make one special dish a day (usually a quiche) and when it is gone, that's it.
The ambiance is what I like about this place. One can sip great coffee drinks, much on a yummy baked goody and read the local paper, a book, or just listen to the locals talk. It's family friendly with a corner spot with toys for the kids. If you are ever in Sitka, the Back Door is worth a visit. The only problem is that its hours are short and the food, though good is not in abundance.
