“Interesting part of history”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2014

This building is now run by the National Parks. The attendants were very friendly and informative. The house is two storey with not much to see but it's historical context within the town and preservation are important aspects to consider when viewing. Plus it's free.

“Beautifully Restored Piece of History”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2014

The park service has done a great job on the restoration of this significant and historic property. We highly recommend the ranger- led tour of the upstairs of the building. They do a great job and know their material well. It is good to hear about the positive side of the Russian presence in Sitka, and the man that truly cared for the native people.

A wonderful step back to the past and Russian history. Run by Park Service so only$4... a great experience and highly educational.

“Great ranger-lead tour of upstairs area”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2014

There are general exhibits about Russian Alaska downstairs, and a paid ranger-lead tour of the historic bishop's residence and chapel upstairs. Only my husband and myself were on the guided tour of the upstairs when we took it so had a close look at the historic rooms with all our questions answered.

“The Interior Appointments and Objects Translate the Russian Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2014

Most of us from "the lower 48" have only a textbook narrative of Russian Alaska and its purchase by the United States. This building possesses keys to a far greater understanding of the role of the Church and its relation to the Russian state. The interpretive talks also provide insight into how the Russian orthodox Church built on the Tlingit traditions in its attempts to spread the faith. The chapel's icons are exceptional, and it is a small version of the nearby church.
