“Safe viewing of Alaska bears”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2013

Great, safe, way to see Alaska brown bear. Nice viewing deck, with narrator who knows the bears, hands on raised some of them. Witnessed a feeding, nicely done. Bears personalities were reflected in behaviors and you can see the love of the animals that has gone into the project. Not an expensive tour, but proceeds go to caring for the bears that cannot be released back into the wild.

“Fortress of the Bear”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2013

The bears were fun to watch. I couldn't hear the narrator. A half hour or so would be the right amount of time to go through the Fortress.

“In no way natural habitat, but great fun all the same!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2013

These are bears who can no longer be released in the wild. They are not in their natural habitat at all. But, they are in huge enclosures with excellent viewing platforms that give you a great chance to see how they live and interact. They come to the sound of the trainer's voice, and all have a trick they do, which is a little kitschy, but still fun - escpecially for young kids. Both my daughter and I enjoyed our visit very much.

“Bear: labor of LOVE”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2013

This facility is a work in progress. It is certainly a labor of true love. Alaska has so many bears the state as a whole are not that interested in helping. But, the families that are at the Fortress are well taken care of. They are NOT performing bears, but bears in permanent housing that are encouraged via fun activities with food as a reward to exercise the injured areas. For example, Lucky was injured to the point of an inability to walk and certainly could not raise up into a two hind foot position. He was rescued with her brother and sister after their mother was killed. He can now stand up with encouragement and a lot of effort and take a piece of apple from our hand through bars at the back of the enclosure. He and his brother were both so gentle but totally safe from us while we are safe from them. They could hurt us easily simply due to their size even if they were not trying to. The caregivers are mostly volunteers. two this years from England Awesome work that is not well funded. If you are so inclined, please view their website, buy the products and donate.

“City tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2013

We were surprised to see three grizzly bears totally relaxed in their surroundings. They had ample room to interact with each other and to also have room to themselves. These bears did not act like bears in other zoo settings. They appeared more natural and completely relaxed.
