My husband, 2 young kids, and I just returned from an Alaskan cruise. Although we took a helicopter ride to a dogsled camp on top of a glacier while in Juneau, the highlight of our entire trip was our excursion with Paul Davis of Gallant Adventures. On this almost 4 hour boat ride on his small but trusty boat, we saw grey whales, humpback whales, sea otters, bald eagles, a sea lion, seals, puffins, cormorants, and a peregrine falcon. He took us to an incredible sea cave on St. Lazaria Island - just incredible!
Paul is a geologist and his insight into the formation of the island and the nearby volcano was very interesting. His knowledge of where the wildlife would be was astounding. The whales were right beside our boat! He was a pleasure to spend the day with, and was very conscientious of getting us back to our ship on time, even dropping us at a nearby dock. He had Alaskan beer on board too :).
It was wonderful to be able to charter a small private boat, we felt like we really got to see everything. In comparison to people who took excursions on larger whale watching boats, we had a much more incredible and personal experience.
