“BEST FISHING LODGE YET”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2010

Dove Island lodge is the best fishing experience i have had in Alaska. The 5 star food is fantastic. the fishing guides know their business extremely well. The airplane freshwater fishing was the best part of the trip. This is a must place to stay in Alaska.

The lodge and rooms are very nice and comfortable. The dinners are exactly what they advertise. The service is marginal to say the least. This fishing lodge is designed for couples that do not know anything about fishing or service. You have to ask twice for everything, do not expect them to go out of their way, i.e. you may have to ask for coffee or wake them up for breakfast, or wait at the dock for 45 minutes to be picked up. Fishing was marginal, fly outs are pretty but do not expect in July to fish for anything more than dollies or pink salmon. They only have two places that they fly too for the most part, and you will spend most of your time hiking and 2 hours fly fishing. Forget dropping crab pots or shrimp pots on the way to go fishing like they say because its in the opposite direction, its more of a back up plan if the seas are too rough for fishing. We spent over 12k for a week and was very disappointed with the staff. We left there and had a great time fishing the peninsula, we took several helicpoter fly outs after we left for half the cost and completely better fishing and excellent guides. My thoughts are is if it was 6k for two I would say its worth it, but in this economy there are too many places that are going to knock your socks off with food and service. They also have a second boat that is horrible for what your paying for. My advice...Try Bristol Bay..Rainbow lodge, or Talon in Sitka.

Dove Island resort mostly attracts fishermen seeking THE FINEST steelhead fishing and access possibly anywhere probably on the planet. Its owner is a hotshot pilot and gets you into (I mean INTO) Alaska wilderness where record steelhead are caught. My wife and I went primarily because it looked five star though we don't fish. It didn't matter..we were treated like King Salmon anyway and the food was prepared by major young chefs and the rooms were very cozy. Overall this could be a honeymoon spot fish or no fish! The island is very private and access to Sitka is always handy. Duane the owner is the ulltimate Alaskan guide and flys you to the hot spots over gorgeous scenery with aplomb. My wife and I were treated to a float plane ride to pick up his fishing guides forty five minutes away. His charming daughter added to our stay serving dinners that would be knockout meals ANYWHERE. His wife made a disc of our trip plus music and we felt finely taken care of in every respect. Overall this is for serious fishermen mostly catch and release but they will get you onto halibut etc too and provide everything in the way of gear.Duane is a very generous and expert host and overall we were more than satisfied with the whole quality of service. The sea along the coast enters the land like fingers on a piano and Dove Island both preserves and glorifies everything beautiful about Alaska. Just landing on a fjord in such capable hands was for us a thrill as we were new to flat planes and Duane made it a unique treat. it is heartening to know places where our wilderness is honored and where folks like my wife and i can enjoy it with such finesse.
