“Wonderful getaway!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2013

This was our first experience at a bed and breakfast, and it could not have been better! We felt right at home and the breakfast was a true gourmet experience. There is a hot tub right outside the rooms with a beautiful mountain view, which was great for relaxing in at night. Christa went out of her way to make sure we enjoyed our stay. We had such a good experience we ended up staying an extra night! We will be back!

This was a perfect night away from D.C. Christa was very friendly and willing to help us with everything. The breakfast was delicious--pumpkin/apple pancakes with bacon and fresh fruit. Yum! The room is clean and beautifully decorated. It felt removed from the rest of the world even though it was just a short drive to downtown Luray. It was the perfect getaway.

We were looking for a nice B&B in the Shenandoah region for our 20th anniversary and were fortunate to find "Once Upon a Mountain" through this site. We chose the "sleeping beauty" room and were very impressed with the room and, especially the views of the mountains from our walk-out deck. We brought wine and cheese and had a wonderful sunset experience watching the clouds roll-in over the mountain tops. Christa was a very warm and helpful host, prepared excellent breakfasts both mornings we were with her and provided us with great local knowledge for restaurants and vineyards in the area. To finish off the whole experience, Christa's dog, Willey, is the friendliest dog you could meet and makes you feel like your at home. Would highly recommend Christa's B&B.

Our group was comprised of four women visiting the Shenandoah Valley area on a one week trip within Virginia. Our two nights at Once Upon a Mountain were definitely one of the highlights of our trip. The drive up the mountain is a beautiful destination of its own...we stopped several times just to photograph the lush scenery. Christa is a warm and welcoming hostess and her home is a reflection of her desire to make visitors feel like family. Her breakfasts were delicious and always
accompanied by lively and interesting conversations. The grounds were equally inviting with a large cleared area for being lazy, sitting around the fire, or just admiring nature at its best.

We planned a last-minute escape for a few days in early October and were fortunate enough to find a room available at Christa's lovely B&B. The setting is beautiful and the house beautifully appointed and immaculately maintained. Although it initially seemed out of the way as we continued to climb up the mountain, Once Upon a Mountain is so superior to the other accommodations that we saw on either side of the mountain that it was more than worth the drive and turned out, in fact, to be convenient for visiting Shenandoah National Park each day. Christa gave us a dining recommendation which we would never have discovered on our own and she was so "on the same page" with us that we completely trusted her. We had great talks, sat with our feet up in the living room and watched the first Presidential debate together, and generally felt so much at home that we sometimes forgot to close our bedroom door!
We peeked into all of the bedrooms and each looked delightful. Breakfast was delicious and a delightful social experience. Our visit to Christa's home made our holiday memorable. Thank you!

This stay was a stopover on the way to Asheville and after being on the road from Florida to Maine and return for more than three weeks. The B&B is on a mountain so getting there involves a trek up a gravel, but well maintained, winding road. Once there, the setting is storybook with beautiful views of a meadow and mountains. The Queen room is quite spacious with its own private deck access. We had a wonderful night's rest -- no sounds but nature's -- and a delicious breakfast. It is a bit of a drive back to Luray for dinner. I would recommend bringing something for dinner to the B&B (you could use the kitchen, I'm sure) and save the drive back and forth especially if you have multiple night stays. Our only regret is that we stayed only one night since we were on a schedule for our next stop.

Room Tip: All the rooms looked delightful.

We, a family of four, visited Virginia for the first time at the end of September 2012, just as Fall colors started. Once Upon a Mountain was the perfect place to stay to enjoy the Shenandoah National Park. Christa made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived and gave us excellent information and suggestions to discover the area. We loved the accommodation and appreciated Christa's eye for detail. It felt like a home away from home. The breakfasts were just way better than at home! We also enjoyed the good conversations we had. Wish we could stay longer.... Maybe next time!
