“Would give 0 stars if I could”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2012

I was hoping to return from a wonderful stay at the Victorian Inn, and to write an elaborate review about how wonderful the stay was. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed by the overall service at the Victorian Inn. Quite simply, our visit lacked finesse and quality service.

Upon arriving at 3:00 pm (which was agreed upon at the time I made our reservation), we were informed that the room was not ready due to a late check out. Really, it appeared that the room was not set up with the romantic package I requested. We went to the room where we found lukewarm champagne (it had not been chilled previously, as I was told it would be), and the strawberries had been hastily, and sloppily, dipped and laid on a plate. The roses would have been nice, but they were unwrapped and tossed on the bed.

While opening the champagne, the cork popped and hit the chandelier, breaking a small dangling charm. My boyfriend and I collected the pieces off the bed and the floor, which was very dirty, and clearly hadn't been swept in some time. I quickly went downstairs to tell Marcus about the incident. He was a bit frustrated (and rightly so--I am very aware of how obnoxious it is that we broke something), but then his comments evolved into highly inappropriate, suggestive comments. Being referred to as a "bad girl" or a "wild woman" is not something I expected at the inn. He also told me "You're lucky you're taken...," which, quite frankly, gave me the creeps. I offered to pay him to repair the piece of the chandelier, but he assured me that was not necessary. (I will say that that was very generous and understanding of Marcus, but my positive interaction with him ended there.)

Later, in the room, we wanted to sit on the balcony. The balcony had not been swept, and the table was covered with cigarette butts from the previous guests. We were also disappointed to see that our private balcony had a perfect view of trash cans. Not very romantic. Back in our room, we could hear every door, every chair, every conversation, every phone ringing. That wasn't too bad; we were aware that we were upstairs during the dinner hour.

We did go downstairs for dinner, where they weren't sure where to sit us. We ordered a pleasant meal, but spent too much time waiting on our waitress to get back to us. I understand the staff was busy, but the service just felt like another disappointment in the long line of let-downs we had experienced at the Victorian Inn.

After dinner, we decided to try the in-room jacuzzi, which was absolutely wonderful. The towels, however, were dirty. I reached for a wash cloth and it was still covered in make-up. Sigh. We thought we should go to sleep to avoid any other disappointments, but we were kept up all night by the arctic cold air conditioning, and the train tracks, and the fire station. It would've been nice to know that the inn is nestled between two of the noisiest sites in town.

Maybe some of these issues could have been avoided if someone had checked us in properly and told us about the noise, or the location, or air control, or anything. Instead, we were waiting for someone to haphazardly decorate our room and then we were sent upstairs. For what I paid, I am highly disappointed in the quality, the presentation, and the overall service--or really, lack thereof--we received. Nearly $300 is a ridiculous price for room temperature cheap champagne, dirty towels, a freezing bedroom, and an inappropriate, uncomfortable experience with Marcus.

Yes, it's a visit to remember, but unfortunately, not for the right reasons.

I would also like to note that I sent this same review to the inn on the day we checked out. It is nearly 2 weeks later, and I haven't heard anything from them.

“Best in the Area!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2012

The Victorian Inn Shenandoah Kitchen is the best in the area.

We stayed the night in the Turret Suite, it is unlike any place the two of us have seen!

The restaurant staff took us to our room and we had a little get away....

They offered live music outside, free of charge!

Previous "Is this a joke?" Our response is, maybe it is a joke? We also took advantage of their Happy Hour, %50 Off all Beer and Wine, we loved the Pinot Nior and the Bourdeaux Blanc. We were amazed, then you get %10 off being a guest at the Inn. We felt like we got the last laugh!

Then the food, sea scallops adorned with truffles and foie gras, amazing! Grass fed steak that he felt it was the best steak he has had, eventhough he does not eat them everyday! I had truffle organic chicken with the greatest beets I have had with spinach and pistachio aioli...
You can definately taste the freshness of the Shenandoah in their cuisine.

For breakfast the next morning Chef Marcus gave us French toast with a cheesecake filling, then a frittata with bacon, potato and basil pesto! Maybe I should eat breakfast more often.

Excellent accomidations, reasonable get away from the Capital, highly recommended.

The best service and best food in the area in a stunning Victorian!

Room Tip: It is walking distance to other shops and restaurants, has a wonderful restaurant downstairs and ple...

“Decent B&B with rooms that are pretty good for a romantic weekend.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2012 via mobile

Rooms are designed well but slightly aged. Service is understaffed but friendly. Breakfast is a fixed menu that could leave you wanting more. You can hear your neighbors and vice versa. The jacuzzi is amazing. Location is cool but on Luray'a main st so not great if you want remote.

“Another New Owner, Another Over Priced Meal, Another Expectation that fell far short.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2012

I had a chance to revisit The Victorian Inn under the new management/chef/owner. He comes to the turnstile known as the Victorian Inn. Once a very nice "family" Inn and humble restaurant that has changed hands so many times as it has changed seasons. Now a new neon "OPEN" sign and big banner out front saying we are open half hung across the front fence of this once sucessful inn. Both signs that the ambiance of this location has left the building. We ventured in not to be too judgmental to see what the Victorian Inn brings now under the tutelage of Chef Marcus. First impression is the place is a ghost town on a summer evening Saturday night -- just two couples. We ordered a couple drinks, and considered ordering food until we witnessed the other couples long wait and ultimate dissatisfaction with the outcome of the food. The food looked uninspired and the plating was terrible. Overall, the service was slow, the staff were clueless/catatonic, and the kitchen seems to leave alot to be desired. That was enough for us to choose other dining plans.
A little time has passed since that fateful night, and went to the website to see what they are presently attempting to be. I was a bit taken back when they claimed to be The Tripadvisor rated number 1 which is blatently false in any present terms in regards to the Victorian Inn. I find no joy in calling out a place on what it supposedly stands for, but this edges on libelous claims given the service we and others have received. It also claims to be family owned for Twenty years, and in some respects that is true, but the family has been mostly hands off for many years. Not to mention it is claimed to be owned by the new chef. Like so many things at the Victorian Inn this is just another example of the mixed messages this place has been and still is today.

Best advice moving forward would be to focus on what was sucessful. A humble inn that stakes its claims on offering real food at a reasonable price, and it builds its name through hard work. That means thoughtful creative seasonal LOCAL food, attention to detail, and extensive staff training that empowers them with a thorough knowledge and goal of impeccable service. This doesn't mean you need to be the Inn at Little Washington, but it means you strive to be the very best at everything you do. Once you focus on these things you will regain your identity, and slowly regain the loyalty of the town and tourist as well.

“Great cabin near Shenandoah National Park”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2012

We recently stayed at Treetop Escape, managed by Woodruff Inns of Luray, Virginia on our visit to Shenendoah National Park. The cabin is very close to the Shenandoah River and about 9 miles from the Park. It is about 4 miles from the town of Luray and hard to find the first time. Plan to arrive during the daylight hours! The cabin sleeps 4, with 2 bedrooms and a loft with a cot that could accommodate one additional person if necessary. Sheets and towels are
provided but no soap! Although we did not use them there are 3 gas fire places. The kitchen has very nice stainless appliances. Take all of your own food, including salt and pepper if you plan on cooking. There are plenty dishes, utensils and pots and pans. We enjoyed our stay here and would return if in the area.

Room Tip: No pool or fitness center but I could not get rid of the accidental rating above.
