“Great Place to stay outside sequoia national park”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2008

From the moment we turned up and found that the we could stay there, even tho' we had no reservation in the height of summer, we knew that this was going to be good

There was a very friendly welcome and the pool and grassy area looked great .

The rooms were large and comfortable. This is how motels should be.

Make a reservation as it was full for the next 2 nights while we were there!

What a pleasant surprise!
Travelling with our 3 & 5 yo Daughters we knew we would be in need of a break on our adventure to the Sequoia National Park.
The Lazy J had EVERYTHING a family could need and then some! This motel is set farther back from the main road than most therefore it is soooo quiet and peaceful!
There are sprawling green lawns – and a fun playground which was like an oasis for our kids after being in the car for 4 hours!
As a parent of young ones, I avoided an on river property as the river can be dangerous. At the Lazy J. Ranch there was plenty of space for the kids to run/explore/play without being in harm’s way.
The pool was well kept clean & refreshing and there are plenty of “farm type” animals to interest kids.
BBQ’s are available and a nice continental breakfast assortment pastry/fruit etc. selection. This was perfect for us before continuing our trip.
The staff was very friendly and helpful. The Lazy J has a “Homey” feel to it as opposed to a “National Chain” which is what I think adds to all the charm. I am sure those big names chains would never allow 2 adorable well behaved dogs to great their guests!
There is river access via the back property, it is a short hike – which for us added to the adventure.

We stayed in a motel room which featured 2 beds, coffee, microwave, fridge, TV. A/C - Heat and bathroom amenities. There is also a VCR/DVD player and movies available in the office.
We had such a wonderful stay here that in the future we hope to return for an extended stay and will consider the “cottage” style room that also has kitchen facilities.
Certainly well worth the rate… be prepared to enjoy real country charm!

I stayed in this motel over Christmas last year and based on that pleasant experience I made another reservation this Christmas. The change in the course of a year was shocking. Last year the room was a basic motel room, and was neat, clean and well maintained. This year, the first red flag was the sleazy looking old guy sitting outside in front of the room next door. Not a reassuring sight for a woman traveling alone. He remained in that chair, three feet from my door, the entire time I was unloading my car. I dropped off my luggage and did not return until 11:30 that night, when I discovered that the t.v., microwave, clock radio and refrigerator were all unplugged. The refrigerator did not work when plugged back in. The shampoo in the bath had been opened. The coffee station was not clean, and in fact one of the coffee cups was stuck firmly to the tray by a dried coffee ring. Needless to say, I didn’t have a cup of coffee. The pull out magnifying mirror was missing. The pad of paper by the phone had one curled piece of paper left on it. No pen/pencil. I don’t understand why they would rent this room when 2/3rds of the motel was empty. Sadly, I now cannot recommend this place to anyone and would definitely warn people to stay away from Room 18.

Touring in California from UK, we wanted a place just for one night near the Sequoia Park entrance. Looked on the Net and Lazy J seemed the best option for us -- even for 1 night it's useful to have a kitchen in areas where there isn't much restaurant choice, as we are quite picky about the types of food we like to eat. Lazy J seemed the best on offer, with its cottages, so we called the hotel and booked one and we certainly didn't regret it.

Cottage just what we wanted with comfortable furnishings, well equipped kitchen, and quiet (although we can see that in summer, as it's a good place for families, it might get a bit noisy around the pool area). Our only small criticism of the cottage was that, as so often, there was no door to divide the kitchen from the living/bedroom, only an open doorway; no useful curtain or blind was provided at the kitchen window, resulting in too much light shining through into the bedroom. Not really much of a problem in October, but we would think twice about staying there in high summer -- if we wanted to get woken up by the sunrise we would go camping!

Owners were friendly, helpful, obviously customer-oriented and caring. Included breakfast is all pre-packaged and pretty basic, but it is all there and useful if you're in a hurry. Plenty of videotapes, etc. and I think some reading material.

Obviously we don't know what the motel units are like, but to judge by the cottages we would recommend with enthusiasm -- we hope to return in the future. Echoing another reviewer's advice, we say don't book through BVI website, call up the hotel and speak to a real friendly person, you will get what you want if they have it and probably pay less, too!

  • Liked — clean, quiet, owner attitude
  • Disliked — needs more thoughtful action to keep out unwanted light from bedroom

Booked this hotel due to the other reviews we read in TripAdvisor for a last minute weekend trip to the Sequoia National Park and we were not disappointed. All the other positive reviews are right on target - the hotel grounds are spotless and the staff was very friendly. The room was spacious and felt freshly remodeled. The beds were first class and the shower had lots of hot water and strong pressure. The cats were a delightful welcoming party and silent sentries that accompanied us everywhere while asking for nothing but an occasional scratch behind the ear. Ok, they'll let you rub them as much as you want. Even the turkey, goats and sheep were happy to see us. The room was nice and quiet, even with other guests on both sides of us. The view around the hotel makes you want to stay an extra day. We will definitely go back next Summer with the grandkids or on a romantic honeymoon getaway just for ourselves!

I love this place. Plan on returning as often as I can. The goats and sheep are fun. Beautiful views of the mountains from here. The wild turkey playing with the cat was great fun. They are very pet and child friendly. I would recommod this lovely place to anyone who is traveling in the area. Do not know that I have ever had a better time than my husband and I had here.
