“The La Fonda is Santa Fe”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2010

I love this place--always have. It epitomizes Santa Fe to me. As one with allergies, the only thing that would make it better is if one had the option to get rid of all the down and get a hypoallergenic comforter and pillow. Otherwise, I love the cozy rooms and in single digit weather, I didn't even have to turn on the heating unit, the place is so well constructed. The room rate was a steal and I could not be more pleased.

Staff were very friendly, and seem to really enjoy their work. Had several excellent meals (dinners and breakfasts) in La Plazuela restaurant. The room was lovely and unique. The entire hotel feels like a living history. The bed was very comfortable, and the location on the Plaza can't be beat. Great art in the room.

My wife and I were moving from CA to CO and we stopped in SF to stay the night. We found La Fonda on this site and decided to stay. We thoroughly enjoyed it even though it was off-season and very cold (outside, not in the hotel). The rooms were nicely decorated and the staff was friendly and hospitable. We had read that the hotel restaurant was just OK but our personal experience was excellent! We enjoyed a wonderfull breakfast before we departed in the morning. I can only immagine that this place must be hoppin' in full season.

Statyed here for business 3 nights. It is real historic, clean, and has great food. You cannot beat the location as it is right on the square in dowtown Santa Fe. The staff was very professional and accomodating.

I have stayed at other hotels however La Fonda surpassed the others by far. The staff was very nice, the bellman was really helpful and friendly. A plus I must say is the complementary water bottles (there is nothing worse than having to pay for water bottles that are already in your room.) I also liked that there was inside parking so my car was not left exposed on the street. The rooms were big and the bedding was comfortable. After staying at La Fonda, I wouldn't stay anywhere else.

La Fonda on the Plaza is the best of the places I have stayed in my three visits to Santa Fe. It is very Southwest-themed in decor and beautifully restored. Restaurant serves great good with delightful wait staff. Convenient and lovely shops right in hotel. Room was large and had the best linens and mattress of any hotel I have ever stayed in, including Europe. All staff, from desk to housekeeping very friendly, responsive and helpful in every way. Location is ideal for walking to most restaurants and attractions. Love this place. Highly recommend.

I took a winter break from New York City and stayed at La Fonda on the recommendation of a friend of a friend who travels often to Santa Fe. The hotel is superbly located right off the Plaza and the service, while not perfect, is very pleasant.-- I found Steve the concierge to be very entertaining. La Fonda is an older property which some people will find charming and some will just find just old. And as with many older properties, like those in Europe for instance, there is a very wide variation in the quality of the rooms. I strongly recommend calling and talking to a reservations agent about the kind of rooms available at the different rates. I wanted a room with a view and a fireplace but after speaking with an agent found out that the "third night free" deluxe room I had booked on the hotel's website would have neither. She was able to find me a room that had both that also had a third night free and which I think is one of the better non-concierge level rooms. When I told the woman in the gift shop that I was in room 272 she said it was one of her favorites. It is considered a mini-suite (see photos) but is a large room with a fireplace, large bathroom with double vanities and a balcony overlooking San Francisco Street--to the right is a view of the Cathedral and to the left a view of the Plaza. It was a very comfortable room. The only negative really about the hotel is that the fitness room is tiny with only a few pieces of equipment (but there is an adjacent outdoor hot tub and heated pool that are open in the winter) and that the "spa" is a couple of massage rooms and a company contracted to provide treatments. These folks do all the treatments, from massages to facials, and there are only one or two of them that come and go so getting an appointment is not easy. But overall La Fonda is a lovely place to stay in Santa Fe.
